You’re spot on, as always, as far as I’m concerned. That was exactly my impression of the song when I first heard it when I was 19 when it came out. You wouldn’t think that a 19-year-old has a lot to be nostalgic about, and yet, that’s how the song makes one feel. The lines about the photograph on the dashboard reflecting the picture in reverse. Maybe those are the most poetic line Michael Stipe ever wrote. Certainly the most sentimental. Thanks for playing this song.

For me I let the words wash over me and certain images stick and resonate. Trying to decipher or decode Stipes lyrics is maybe not the point. Ask yourself "What does it mean TO ME"?

Never heard of NIGHT SWIMMING - but know REM from the 80’s. THIS SONG SUCKS. Sounds like some note rearrangement from ‘Man on the Moon’ which is a good song. Stipe is supposed to be a real A-hole so that does not help.
