Vince Gill originally started to write “Go Rest High on That Mountain” after Keiths’s death. A testament to the respect that he had for Keith. He finished the song a few years later after his brother died.

Awesome song, I dated a wonderful man who had lost his wife of 25 years (he was 15 years older than me)who had passed 3 years previously and after dating him for 2 years I had him listen to this song because there was always this ghost (understandably so) and we stayed together for a little longer but he wasn’t healed and the song helped us end amicably and stay friends. So it was a useful tool for me. Happy to report 20 years later I am happily married and he did also eventually marry someone else. He seems happy…and I’m happy for him. 💕 country music holds a lot in my life. Thanks for your reaction to the song.

For me, this makes me sympathize with my friend. They are deeply in love however, her first husband was a different passion. That was her first love and a burning one at that! But he never came home from the war. She remarried after years but this song when we listen to it she always cries for her sweet husband who knows he will always be her second love.

I can't even imagine how much alcohol it takes to die from drinking. and why in his prime just really getting recognition he would feel the need to drink so much. a beautiful song too. he was married to a beautiful woman then, Lorrie Morgan who was also upcoming at that time. She went on to have some hits like "Something in red".

Remember "Go Rest High on that Mountain"?.. Vince wrote that first verse about Keith. The lines "You weren't afraid to face the devil, you were no stranger to the rain" is a reference to Keith Whitley's song "I'm No Stranger to the Rain". Vince finished started writing it when Keith passed, and finished it a few years later when his own brother passed.
