Oh Adine what a beautiful experience you had. That small family of elephants 🐘 seemed to be hanging on to every word you were saying to them. I loved it when you rumbled to them and one of them rumbled back to you. How sweet was that. What an amazing experience for you Adine. Thank you for sharing your Kenya experience with us. Tsavo, Tsavo, how I love you. One of the places I'd love to visit again and again. So many of my SWT ele ❤️🐘❤️ babies live here and so many have been reintegrated into the wild. So many magical stories of the former orphans bringing back their own wild-born children back to Ithumba and Voi to "show them off" to their former caregivers. Many magical stories of wild-born adult elephants coming there for medical assistance with arrows, apparently because the wild-living ex-orphans told them "this is a place where you will be helped."

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. They don't seem to have carers with them. I don't know if it's my imagination but they seemed to be an emptiness about them. Not the same sort of interaction we are used to seeing in our herd.
@janparish78952 ай бұрын
Hi Judith. Apologies if I'm incorrect but aren't these Elephants wild? They appeared to be a family therefore I wouldn't expect to see carers. The Jabulani Herd are not wild and are used to human interaction. I don't know if Adine visited the Nursery where the orphans each have their own "stable" and are given regular milk feeds by the many carers. 💚🐘🙏

May I envy you, Adine? The work of the Sheldrick Trust is amazing, and you just missed Mweya coming back to the stockades to give birth to her second calf, fathered by another reintegrated orphan! They all came back so her baby girl was born right there and introduced to their former carers! I think the way the rewilded orphans come back to visit their younger friends, introduce their wild offsprings, or ask for help, is a testament to the love and dedication of the Trust's keepers, who devote their life to these elephants just like you and your team. ♥

Hello Adine, In the description, mention is made that the original reason for the trip was to visit the Voi Reintegration unit; I assume this will be part of your studies of looking into reintegrating the herd/part of the herd into the wild? I just read HERD’s blog on this subject and certainly don’t envy you making any decisions that would involve splitting the group up. I wish you the best of luck as indeed it will be nearly impossible to separate your heart from your head 🥹❤️🐘❤️

Great connections ... but I am wondering why there seems to be so many orphans in Kenya compared to South Africa?
@squeaker7172 ай бұрын
I don't remember the exact dates but between about 2015 and 2022 there was a huge poaching problem as well as drought years in Kenya. Many of SWT's current orphans resulted from one of these issues.
@herdelephantorphanage7 күн бұрын
While both countries face challenges related to elephant conservation, the combination of poaching history, human-wildlife conflict, and population size likely leads to the higher number of orphans observed in Kenya.
@elkakruger67142 ай бұрын
It seems to me that those mature elephants have bigger ears than the ones in South Africa also the head construction is a little different, smaller I will say. Am I wrong??
