You know what the sadest part about this episode is? You can't really blame Herb for still being mad.
@fraya10226 жыл бұрын
L Piskura - I disagree. It's unhealthy as heck to do hold onto a grudge for 20 years. Especially when are literally about to die. Especially when what he did was ultimately for his career and life? I feel like he should have understood in the long run.
@themambawarrior22906 жыл бұрын
You know what the saddest part about this is? How Herb attacks BoJack on his way out when he stops for a few seconds to examine something, and then proceeds to proclaim that BoJack is the bad person. Yes, the guy is a selfish scumbag, but at least he isn't a hypocrite. He felt remorse for his actions, and wanted to make up, and I can completely understand why Herb doesn't want to forgive him in spite of that. However, when he is walking away, and just pauses for a few seconds to look at one single object, attacking him makes Herb, in my eyes, in the moral red. He has no room to lecture someone on them not being a good person when he attacks someone who's only transgression was 20 years ago, and one that he shows remorse for. He wasn't stealing, he wasn't attacking, he wasn't doing something except momentarily pausing. A good person does not attack someone for not walking away fast enough.
@Somerandomstranger6 жыл бұрын
fraya1022 I think that you're forgetting the fact that Bojack did not speak to Herb for 20 years after stabbing him in the back. Bojack could haved apologized after deciding to backstab Herb but no, he didn't try to apologize to him until he found out that Herb is dying if cancer. Seriously, imagine wronging someone in a way and decide to cut off all contact with that person whether intentional or not without apologising. You expect that person to forgive you after a prolonged period of time?

You're not always going to be forgiven, you won't always get the girl, marriage doesn't mean a happy ending, having been a victim does not mean you cannot be the perpetrator, and everyone has problems that are as important to them as your problems are to you. It's hugely different from most other cartoons. Nothing resolves. Ever. Every plot line goes until it's dropped for a while and brought back again later.

hope is scary indeed. specially how, the first time he actually gets kelsey hurt. second time a mixture of his own bad decisions and other external factors doesn't let him at least get in touch with kelsey to say sorry, regardless of if his apology woudl have been accepted or not, and the thrid one, funny enough it wasn't his fault he is unable to work with her again

There's something...I guess surreal about cartoons having the continuity to express that the actions you do and the choices you make don't realistically reach closure after a single episode. My first thought of this was in Steven Universe when Pearl manipulates Garnet for her own satisfaction, hurting both their progress on the mission and their friendship. You can really see how much what she did has strained their interactions. When Pearl apologizes at the end of the episode...Garnet says nothing. Amethyst says something like "I wish things could end like they do in cartoons" and the episode ends. But that gets resolved eventually. Bojack, by the looks of it, takes this much farther. Because in reality there is no set time where something is supposed to heal. It takes time and it takes effort, but if you can't put in what it requires to set things right, then nothing will change.

It's very rare for western shows to follow a plotline that has continuity and each episode adds something to the story of the entire series, that's why BoJack Horseman deserves props for it's maturity standing out next to other animated adult shows. I largely enjoy cartoons like Steven Universe but as someone who's already grown up, I've waited long for a show that deals with the aftermath of past events from the perspective of someone who's mistakes have changed their life for better or worse.

+Pixar The Great To be fair the show does have some quirks. The first few episodes aren't very good, the art style isn't great, and the character designs are pretty bland and don't stand out. However I believe it's on purpose as it's after the hump and everything is set up that it all clicks together and it all makes sense. The show starts off bad to show you how shallow and stupid adult shows are while setting you up to feel secure and safe so that the show can take it away from you, the art style to me is meant to symbolize how ugly the world is while the bright colors seem to try to hide it and make things seem happy like we all try to do in our own lives, and the character designs are MEANT to be bland it seems to play with the idea that you can tell what a person is like from how they look and throws it out the window to show you that your appearance is an act that you put on for other people and that the person you truly are is the one you are when no one is looking and that your flaws and decisions speak more about who you are then anything your appearance can. This show is an experience and it came for me at really good time, I was suicidal and wanted to end my life and one night I'm depressed and thinking about killing myself, when I watch the show and give it a chance after hating it for it's ugly art and bad first episode, I said fuck it it's not like I have anything better to do with my life and the show changed my life it helped me tackle the problems in my life I was avoiding and taught me some lessons that I had no idea I needed to learn, like that life is shitty sometimes and learning how to accept and cope with it is what life is all about and that happiness isn't a goal or measurement of success because it's temporary and the real goal in life is to accept that there isn't a goal in life. This show will make you feel and think things about yourself that you might not be prepared for and it will change you.

By the end of series three I do have to agree with Todd though. Bojack keeps saying he's going to change, but he keeps making the same mistake over and over again, and it's kind of exhausting to watch him hurt himself and other characters you love repeatedly.

But in the words of Mr. Peanutbutter "Bojack is a broken soul." That's the thing, he tries to change, he does, you can see it in seasons two and three, but he fails, because he was broken by the events of his childhood, by his actions and mistakes. But he isn't sure he can't change. My favorite episode was Downer Ending, even after finishing all three seasons.

I'm a 20 year old young adult, and this show has prepared me for the harsh realities that will become of my life when I get older. We can't resolve Our situations like a cartoon. Scars and wounds take a very long time to heal, some people can't even heal from the scars others have put on them. We all have fears and insecurities that hold us back. Bojack is afraid of being alone, Diane wants to move on with her life but she keeps on dwelling in the past, Todd wants to have fun with his life and also wants to move on but bojack slows him down to his level and ruins every chance Todd made to stay with him. And when Todd found out about Emily. All hell broke lose on their relationship, this quote makes a good example of how some people are in real life "you are all the things that's wrong with your life, it's not the drugs, not the alcohol, or when you were a kid, or the shitty things you did in your career, it's YOU." Reality isn't a sitcom, it takes time and effort to get better. Nothing will be resolved under one night especially something as bad as ruining people's lives for your own benefits.

You know, I wasn't planning on watching the show anytime soon. I thought this was just going to be another one of the many reviews of a show/movie that I never really saw and was only really interested in the commentary. But Enter's intro got me curious so I stopped watching the review before it really started and decided to start watching. I few days later I binged watched the whole series, have serious questions about my life, and have this weird feeling of both being glad I decided to watch it yet at the same time regret for doing this to myself. We need more shows like Bojack Horseman. Adult animation that can actually relate to adults not because it has swearing, sex and drugs, but because it makes people see the darker aspects of life that they try to avoid.

more or less the same for me. I'm almost done with season 2 and decided to rewatch the review... Damn man it's harsh. I just watched ep 11 of season 2... What is it with ep 11's in this show? the 11th episode of season 1 had an extremely depressing ending as well.

Just so you know, i'm glad you do what you do. Your reviews have had a big impact on me. You've opened my eyes to many series that I would have never given a chance and given me a lot of insight on creating and improving content of my own. And about your thoughts at the end of the review... No one knows what the future holds. This might be your "good old days", or it might not. But just look at people like JK Rowling. She wrote Harry Potter when she was 32, and before that she had seen herself as a failure. I guess my point is, you never know what might happen down the line. But i'd say just do what you love doing.

It's more plot than anything else. A really good, introspective kind of a plot, but still. And I say this as someone who has Bojack Horseman in their top 3 adult cartoons. Nah raptor, even given that ratio disparity, I still don't watch them as much; what I mean is I've watched pretty much all of the atrocities ones, whereas I've only watched maybe a third of the admirable ones, at most. I think it's just human nature, finding more fun in finding fault with things than with praising things (because survival instincts developed along lines of problem solving, and that's why it feels good to notice when things suck - stuff that's already good doesn't need solving therefore it doesn't feel as good to notice it).

I mean forget this show not being for people who like happy endings, this is not a show for people who believe in the best of humanity. Yet, it still comes from a place you can sympathize with. Given that "anthropomorphic" means "having human characteristics", technically yes. That would be roughly like calling Blackbeard "piratical", or fire fiery; it's what we call a "mathematician's answer", that is technically correct in a way that is completely useless to humanity, God, and whatever aliens are monitoring us right now wondering what the Higglethorp we're talking about.
@leotamer58 жыл бұрын
Actually no. If you take the two words literally, than yes, however when used together in that context it means a more specific thing of non-human animals with a human-like body. Technically a centaur would be anthropomorphic, but we generally would not call it an anthropomorphic animal. So, Context, it matters.

@TwilightTheCabbit8 жыл бұрын
I actually didn't want to give BoJack Horseman a chance when it first started up because I saw images from it and stuff like that and it just seemed like your run of the mill crappy adult sitcom in the same league as Family Guy, except that the main character was a guy with a horsehead. That's how unaware I was, since I didn't know he was just a full on humanoid horse living in a world of humans and humanoid animals. And I had no idea how deep this show could get. It's amazing how much an anthropomorphic horse, of all things, can make you feel and how much you can relate to him. And there are many episodes that could have definitely worked as admirable animations. So I can understand how hard it must have been to pick just one. Me, personally, I would have probably picked Downer Ending when it comes to season 1 episodes. It was just so trippy and bizarre, but also extremely sad and depressing, seeing how happy BoJack's life could have been if he had gone down an entirely different path than the one he actually went down. He could have been married, had a kid, grown old with his family, and just been a happy horse. Also, I just want to bring up how near the end of season 3, after all of BoJack's friends have pretty much left him because of his bad choices, notice how the background of his house is completely empty and devoid of life in the opening when prior to this, it had been quite busy with Diane, Todd, Princess Carolyn, and several others hanging out in the back. But now, it's completely empty, kind of like BoJack's life by this point. It really makes you think. I came here to laugh. Not to feel. I was definitely not expecting BoJack Horseman, a show that looks as crude as it does, to make me feel as much as it does. Not often an adult cartoon can make you feel this way. But BoJack succeeds where others horribly fail. *cough* Family Guy *cough*
@Johnlindsey2893 жыл бұрын

I'm so glad that you watched and loved this show. From the day I first watched this show I've been waiting for more people to realize how amazing it is

This whole review was spot on, 100% of why I loved Bojack and still do. It hits way harder then I ever expected, and asks and trys to answer the haed questions of life. You put to video the exact feelings I couldn't word.

Why do tv shows about horses keep tugging at my heart in really weird ways?

The scene that hit me the hardest was the "it's you" speech from Todd. Because it was a scene that finally, FINALLY put into words what I've been feeling about my own family for a while: You can't just feel bad about something after the fact and think that makes whatever you did go away. People can and WILL hold grudges against you and they're not always the bad guy because of it.

Danny Jaycox That scene did the same thing for my feelings towards Michelle Plumby from Gwendy & Ghost. It all started when I saw screenshots of the first part of the speech on Twitter. When sketch previews for Gwendy & Ghost Episode 9 started being posted, that speech flashed through my mind because it was clear the episode would start with Michelle making a bad decision. It had been a while since Michelle felt bad about her bad decisions, so Todd’s speech felt like an appropriate response to her potentially feeling bad again. The day Episode 9 began was the day I searched for Todd’s speech on KZbin, and the second half really got me. Since that day, I came across more and more clips that made me compare BoJack to Michelle, which led to me finally starting the series last month. I watched Downer Ending last night and by the end, I was feeling a little giddy because I finally got to see the “Good Person” scene in full context. Can’t wait to reach “It’s You.” Gwendy & Ghost is on Tapas and Webtoon, though updates are more frequent on the former. tapastic.com/series/Gwendy--Ghost www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/gwendy-ghost/list?title_no=191551 Join Tapas to discover amazing stories and unlock episodes of unique comics and books. I see so much of myself in Bojack Horseman that its terrifying. The living in the past, the retreating into depression and self-pity, the keeping everyone at arms length. The main difference between me and the character is the substance abuse, the sex, and the multiple felonies. I am much more boring than Bojack is.

does anyone remember that crappy show about a kid getting Walt Disney's brain or whatever and sees cartoon characters all the time? MrEnter should do an animated atrocity for that, I think it still applies even if it is part live action.

Is the show "Out of Jimmy's Head"?
@jvg74988 жыл бұрын
And for some reason, has an alien sister and lives with a guy who wants to take his new brain.

+★DetectiveKZbin★ Funny, I was recently thinking of that show. Did it get better than the pilot?
@zerothefool24378 жыл бұрын
now that i think about that made zero sense, ok yeah lets say getting a new brain works, well that means that means that Jimmy is dead, and Walt basically got a new body, you don't magically keep your personality and memories if you change your brain, your brain is literally you

I think you struck the nail on the head for why this show reeled me in so quickly. It's honest, painfully so, but uses elements of fantasy and a mix of light and heavy humor. It's satire, but finally done *right*. Silly yet boring is the standard for many animated shows, when candid yet fascinating is what makes a true gem.

I just finished watching the 11th episode of the show and just...wow. Thank you so much for turning me onto this show! I had the same thoughts on it before watching as you did and it just really looked very basic. But after watching this and I recommendation from one of my friends I finally gave it a watch and all I have to say is thank you. There's nothing better than finding something new that can speak to you on a deeper personal and human level. I'll definitely be recommending this to everyone I can (and I still haven't even finished the first season yet). Keep up the fantastic work man!!!
