Eross Van Leer that’s a military tactic you are supposed to use if captured by enemies. Acting worn down and unable to communicate. There’s that and he was being tortured so he’s probably tired

It might look that way, but trust me, these fuckers are about as unbreakable as it gets. When he decided to do this (Blinking torture in morse code.). He was fairly certain they'd figure it out and kill him. There's a book called "Defiant" it's by Alvin Townley and it's about Jerry Denton, James Stockdale, and the rest of the Alcatraz 11 (The group of American soldiers that Denton was with.). It's an excellent book, and I encourage anyone who is at all intrigued by this video to check it out. There's about 400 pages of incredible stories of these guys taking unimaginable amounts of physical, emotiomal, and psychological punishment and just continuously getting back up. It's has a sort of "Lone Survivor" feel to it, what with the whole "Never Quit." Mindset. Regardless, 'tis my two cents, thanks for reading!

@@albundy6008 I'll take your definition of "a heroic act" as follows: someone devises a plan to transmit the conditions under which he is being held and carries it out with extreme danger to himself and the other POW. I think it is obvious why I removed the word "American". But if removing the word "American" is ok and that is your definition of "a heroic act" or "heroism", would it make any difference if I replace "American" with "Russian" in the context of the Ukraine-Russia conflict? Or even with "ISIS"? And you completely ignored/conveniently forgot one of my previous points which was to provide context to why Mr. Denton had to blink in Morse code to begin with: he was captured after he bombed a foreign country that has never done anything wrong to him specifically or to the USA generally. If bombing innocent people was not a heroic act, then complaining about being "tortured" was a heroic act? So, does context matter or not? If a single moment can make someone a hero, then everybody, even psychopaths, would have at least 1 moment in their lives, would that make everyone a hero equally? Why would you take offense? Did I lie to you or wrongfully state any facts? At least tell me why the USA invaded Vietnam in the first place.

You seem to believe that the greater issue of America's involvement in Vietnam somehow mitigates the act of valor by Adm. Denton. It is also obvious that you have never had the courage to serve in the military. Those of us who have realize what Adm. Denton did was unbelievably courageous. I learned how to spell letters in ASL. I have often thought that if i were in this kind of situation I would use that to subtly get a message out or communicate with fellows if talking were not allowed. The POWs also developed a 'tap' code that they used to communicate between cells. They would spell their message out by tapping on the wall. The letters were arranged in a 5x5 grid (with C and K shared). The sender would tap the number of the row followed by the number of the column represented by the letter. Example H was: tap, tap, pause, tap, tap, tap. Ingenious.

Albeit impressive, how was that morse code helpful? This is the first time hearing of this story. My husband is the history buff so I'll be asking him about this later. Did the U.S. NOT think these POWs were being tortured? I mean I don't too many countries who take in POWs and just give them a picnic in a park. I guess my question is, in what way did his morse code message help anyone. He was in there for another 8 yrs after the fact so it seems to have done nada🤷

@@tlwest21 He was forced to make the video saying he was ok and treated well, his secret message told the truth. Morse code was taught to everyone in the Navy in those days, so ships could communicate without radio, so not surprising someone spotted it.
