THANK YOU! I've seen so many videos here for this type of tutorial. None of them actually explain it! They run through it with music blaring, no actually step by step explanation, irritating. SUBSCRIBED!

@Beslanamith I know what your saying but im not sure if I understand the question. I used the scissor tool (C) to cut the top and bottom anchor points of an ellipse. That way I have a perfect half circle that can be revolved in 3d space seamlessly.

Thanks for the great comment! Illustrator is a great way to creat pixel artwork in full vector! If you import the art into such programs as Flash or After Effects you can great some great sprite videos looking like they are ripped directly from a NES. These things can also be created in older versions of the software as well, you can get a student version of the software you want from adobe.com at more than 70% off.

@NachinDroga I make a half circle because when you ues 3D revolve it takes the object and literally revolves it in 3d space to create your 3d object. So, when you continually revolve a half circle it will create a sphere. If you revolve a circle you will have a circle with a pit in the middle. Go ahead and try it out, create a 3D object out of a circle, and rotate it in the 3D dialogue box and see what shape you get. Its really fun to tou around with different revolved shapes.

HI Dan, i tried to apply your tutorial and wrap a spiral around a sphere. but by no means get the beautiful wave that you have on your blue ball. could you post some more detailed instructions? Other than this its a great tutorial Thanks for posting.
@danpgrady12 жыл бұрын
Hmmm not too sure, you've probably figured it out at this point but a few suggestions anyways. Do you have everything currently selected with the selection tool? Try selecting everything and hitting cmd-g/ctrl-g and hit crop again.

@junx2z Thats a real interesting problem. I havnt experienced that with creating 3d objects. You say they only appear when you hover the mouse over it? From what I hear without seeing a picture of the problem, It sounds like an artifacting problem to me, or your computers video card not properly displaying the 3d object. If it only appears when the mouse hovers over it, it doesn't sound like a problem to me since when its outputted to print or web they wouldn't show.

Since Illustrator at its core isnt 3D software the results or always a little under par.The biggest problem for me is the gradial banding I always get. Usually the "pixelation" wont be seen if you keep your output small. You cant reduce the size because you still have a "live" 3D effect on the path. So every time you resize it will re apply the effect to the new path. you need to go to object>expand to retain the shape. It's best to have your path be the correct size before you apply the effect.

Queastion!!! After I've done all the steps and got the final shape, whenever I hover my mouse over it, randoms lines shows up??? I've used expand appearance and used white arrow tool to delete all the lines, but some are still left behind??
@danpgrady12 жыл бұрын
I've never had this problem so I can't say for sure what it is. When you actually apply both effects is the problem still there or is it just when "previewing" the effect. Sometimes "preview" isn't always correct. If the applied effect doesnt work my only guess would be a problem with your graphics card?

Wow Thanks! Can I ask why did you have to cut the circle? and if I choose to do it with another shape, like a letter or a number, where do I cut?
@michaelbrown54367 жыл бұрын
I think it is because of the way that Revolve works to create a 3D shape. It takes a path such as a curve and revolves it, as if it is being turned on a potter's wheel.

Robert, unfortunately you cant since this is a simulated 3D. It wont import into AE as a 3d object. for that youwould need to use a dedicated 3D software like Cinema 4d. Thanks for the question.

I have a problem. (around 3.43) - when I click invisible geometry its ok, I can see the back of the shere, but then when I clik shade artwork - it looks like my artwork is shaded, but the back of the sphere (invisible geometry) disappears. I can only have invisible geometry applied without shading, or shaded artwork, but without invisible geomerty applied. Anyoen knows why is that? :S
