Did you use a tool to keep the 1st color from being altered when you put the 2nd color down? You did a really fantastic job by the way! It's amazing!" There's no option for me to reply here, so hopefully you get this! I work a lot with layers, so I'll do my line work on a layer, lock it, then do colour underneath on a new, separate layer. This is true for Photoshop and Illustrator, for me anyways. I'm totally guilty of having like, 30 layers before I go in and clean everything up for actual printing. +Zack hey! You can really sketch however you like. I sketched the dinosaur out on paper then sketched the rest out in Photoshop, but nowadays I generally sketch everything really loosely in Photoshop before diving into the design. There's no wrong way to prep a design, but I will suggest not getting too caught up in the sketch because things will naturally change as you flesh it out. I like to focus on composition (size/layout/the figure/ground etc.) rather than try and get the sketch perfect. Hope that helps!

Hey! And thanks! The gritty texture was made using a brush in Photoshop. There's a few comments here where I've gone into detail about switching between Ps and AI to do this if you wanna check them out. In the end I separated the inks to have both a solid and halftones channel so the halftones got the attention they needed and the solid bits weren't jagged from halftoning them. Hope that helps!

Hey, love your work. I just wondered how to separated the colours for printing, I'm guessing there's three layers when it goes to screen. So the second layer of the black that you do later on, how do you make it so the other layers don't have the colour underneath anymore to go to print? Also do you use the pen tool to make the lines?

Hey there! With this design, and most of the stuff I do, I try to use the shirt colour as a 'colour'. In this case, this was printed on black shirts, so we didn't have to print any black ink. In this case, there were 3 ink colours and a white base, so 4 colours in total. The linework was done in illustrator and most of the painting was done in photoshop. The final separations were a mixture of raster and vector seps, which is a really complex thing to do but it preserves the crisp vector lines and makes softer halftones, IMO. I actually just put out the first 2 videos in a tutorial series on vector separations, and will be doing a series on raster seps down the road. Hey Giuliano! Thank you so much! I don't charge, but that would be nice haha I have a new channel set up for time lapses and tutorials. It's called Merchenaries, and I'm commenting from it right now. I actually just started a tutorial series on vector separations, if you wanna check it out! As far as this separation goes, it's not the best example to learn off of. I combined raster separations from photoshop with vector separations from illustrator for a variety of reasons, but it's a really complicated process that isn't super easy to explain unless you're pretty well-versed in separations. That said, after I'm done the vector sep series, I'll be doing one on raster seps and eventually a series on crazy complex separations like this one. +Faster Days Hi there! This is actually kind of a complicated thing to explain, but to put it as simple as possible try doing the following: 1. Draw something quick and random in photoshop in black 2. Put a gradient behind it that goes from black to white 3. Use Select > Colour Range and click on the blackest part of your image. You can adjust the Fuzziness to pick up less or more black 4. In your Channel panel create a new channel and fill your selection with black 5. Delete all the other channels 6. With one channel left, click Image > Mode > Bitmap and put your output from anywhere between 900 and 1200 dpi and choose Halftone from the Method drop down 7. Set your settings like this (what I use, you can mess with them though) Frequency: 45 LPI, Angle: 22.5 degrees, Shape: Ellipse And boom, you have a halftone. There's lots of different things that effect how a halftone will print, especially the settings in the last dialogue there. If you're doing lots of different colours you can split your channels and do them all individually, or if you have RIP software to a film outputter like they do in print shops, Photoshop will automatically halftone your channels. Let me know if you have any other questions! It's a super weird thing to do the first few times. You can also make vector halftones in Illustrator which can be pretty fun.

Oceanfront Studios Hi Jack! I'd really love to make a tutorial about this, and when my life slows down a bit I'll be doing stuff like that. But in the meantime, you want to read up on "separating for screen printing". There are lots of different ways to separate images, and this illustration isn't really the best example for a beginner as it uses several techniques in one shirt. Check out my Nuclear Mermaid design for a straight up halftoned shirt. But reading up on that should help you get started!

I tried to follow up the steps and I just couldn't understand how you converted those colors added in Photoshop to vector format in Illustrator and they still had the gradient effect looking exactly like in bitmap Ps format. You see, I'm having such a hard time trying to create those half-tone gradient effects and until I can do this, my designs are not going to be good as much as I want. Thanks for the video, anyway. +Mateus Breseghello Hi there! The gradients I made in PS were actually output as bitmaps from PS. I know on screen halftone bitmaps from PS look like they're low resolution but it's just a previewing thing. If they're actually printing at low resolution, you'll want to adjust your settings.. I output my halftones at 900 - 1200 dpi, and you can mess around with the angles. If you're consistently working with one print shop, you should ask them what they prefer - different shops like different settings to suit the screens they have and what they're used to. In Illustrator you can automatically make halftones when you print your file through RIP software to be separated onto films, but this is something generally only print shops have as RIP software is crazy expensive and it's just not necessary for a designer. I really don't recommend working the way I did in this video. I was screwing around with combining Photoshop and Illustrator and it ended up being pretty complicated. If you want to, though, all you need to do is place you working PSD file into Illustrator so you can draw vector shapes on top of it. When you update the PSD file, it will automatically update in Illustrator. Then when you want to switch to Photoshop, just copy and paste all your vector layers from Illustrator into your PSD file. There's probably an easier way to do it, but that's what I did here, and it was a pain in my ass. Good luck!

Hey David, Katie here - thank you so much! This illustration took entirely too long haha, I think the total was 10 or 12 hours? I was experimenting with a lot of techniques. Generally my illustrations take around 8 hours. I have a new channel, Merchenaries (commenting here) with some new time lapse illustrations and you can really see how my style of drawing has shifted. I was messing around with some different things and I think this was the shirt that made me realize that gratuitous, tiny details don't actually show up when you print. +Natalie Butsinas Are you working with 100% opacity? The lines can be adjusted by double clicking on the brush tool. You can change your Fidelity and Smoothness to make the lines more smooth or haggard. Also, double click whatever brush you're using and make sure your Diameter has 'Pressure' set and give it a few pts of Variation. If you don't save the brush set you'll have to do that every time you start a new document. Hope this helps!

I can't remember if I cut off the separation portion or if this video is just too fast to see, but either way, this illustration is not the best example to learn from for separations. I combined raster and vector seps to get the final separation, which is a really complex way to do it. This was to preserve the crispness of my vector linework and to have a bit more control over the halftones. If you're interested in learning more about how to do separations, I have a new channel, Merchenaries (commenting here) and have started a tutorial series on vector separations. +Nick Bers I wanted to use some of my favorite Photoshop brushes in this design so I did all the halftone stuff in PS instead of Illustrator. It was really confusing, tbh, and I haven't worked like this again. But if you want to play with both programs on one design, all you have to do is copy and paste all your vector elements from Illustrator into Photoshop, and place your saved Photoshop file as a link in Illustrator. Every time you change the vector, replace the layer you made in Photoshop. The Photoshop file will automatically update itself in Illustrator when you save it. Links are cool :)

I made a digital illustration with my wacom tablet but when passing it for printing, to print T-shirts; despite working all 300 dpi I went blurry with no detail. Not that I could be wrong, save the file by attaching the layers in PDF format for export to Corel Draw and put crosses record, and saving it ends cdr file. I await your prompt response and I need your help and I hope not to bother him with my concerns ... Best regards!!!

+Sandra Choquevilca Hi Sandra, sorry I'm just seeing your comment now! It sounds like you're overthinking how to send your file to the printer. It's great that you worked in 300 dpi and you should just be able to send over the working Photoshop, Illustrator or CorelDraw file and have them print it with no problem. Perhaps something went wrong with outputting it to a PDF specifically for CorelDraw? Also, were you working at 300 dpi at print size from the beginning or did you resample the image to 300 dpi from a lower resolution? At my print shop we warn people about low resolution images. I'm not going to call out your print shop at all but perhaps speak to them about having their designer email you if the print is going to be blurry before going to press or explore other print shops and see what their procedures are? There's no harm in trying out different shops until one fits.

Nader Guilherme Since commenting this Ive started using 2 programs. One called Separation Studios and the other Accurip. Separation studios separates colors into their own B/W image and Accurip turns those B/W images into halftones as it prints out. Hope that helps a little

Let me just start by saying Incredible work! - This is quality for sure. But i have a question, and this is a sincere question, I am not trying to take anything from what you do, just simply learn. How is this profitable? is the profit in the qty sale? I ask because I've been doing shirts for a while and I know that Vector Art just has and will always have a relationship with T-shirt designs... but This is a time lapse. Now, this being said.. if its only 500% and you literally did this in an hour, than I'm just way slower than you (HOLY COW) but i know how this Line art goes... its a tedious process. I charge $250 for a design and i never touch a T-shirt. I'm curious to know how much you charge to do these like this because they are awesome and i need to know how much faster i need to get to volunteer this kind of work for what price?

This was so sick to watch, my dream is to become a graphic designer, and I'm planning on transferring majors. I feel like I've always been pretty good at art, but not amazing. Being a graphic designer though would be a dream job for me. Do you feel like you have to be naturally gifted to do things like this or can it be taught, right now I'm doing Computer Science and it's honestly not what I want to do, I want something more creative.

+BirdyRC Thanks for watching, Birdy! I've always maintained that drawing is a taught skill, but a little talent to understand how to translate what is in your head to paper doesn't hurt. It's kind of like learning an instrument - practice and studying form will make you technically good. The talent part comes in with concept - you can be the best guitar player technically but if you can't create a conceptual song, it won't mean anything to anyone. But I don't really think people are necessarily born with talent - as long as you're open minded you can bring it out of you all of a sudden, but studying and practice is key for both the technical and conceptual side. It's a lot more fun than I make it sound, haha I have a few videos coming out that are better examples of conceptual drawings - I love this shirt but it was a commission and I have since done others that were 100% my own concept. Still love this T-Rex, though! If you feel like you'd like to switch majors, do it! I was studying fashion marketing (with a dream of having my own shirt line) and I'm so glad I switched. Three years later, I'm now considering going back to school to switch gears within the industry again (focus more on illustration/facilitating printing rather than freelancing, and get my degree, as currently I have a diploma).
