Great video. =) I have a NIB Philips car amp. It also has the 8 pin DIN connector and the pale yellow color PCB. It appear that most 80's amp PCB's have this color. I worked on alot of amps back in the 90's. Love your videos! =) Greetings from Sweden.

Hey Kev. Been watching your old videos to try and gain some class D knowledge. I have been given a couple PA Amplifiers to repair. They Turn on, and amplify but the signal sounds like a crazy digital distortion- is the best way I can describe it. Have you got any tips or ideas on what it could be? They are Alto TS215 and TS212 PA Speakers. Both have the exact same problem. I hooked up my scope to the speaker terminals and can see a high frequency switching. The 1khz test tone seems to be riding the switching frequency. Is that normal? Hope u have time to reply. I know you the man for the class D stuff. Cheers

You will see the PWM switching frequency and the audio output frequency on a scope depending on your scope settings. That is normal and how class D works. Google how class d works and you will get a better understanding why. Why you are getting distorted digital output could be caused by many reasons. I would check the PWM "pre driver/generator" driving the output fets and make sure you are getting a nice switching frequency. It is also possible in the output section you could have a fet shorted or a connection failing or other component. Also check for bad traces and solder connection. Sometimes the predive section can cause this distortion and push odd effects down the line. There is not one answer I can give you to find it other than to keep hunting. One of the biggest things is to also make sure any chip or power fets are getting the required voltage rails as well. Odd things can happen when they are not getting the required power to one side of the signal.

The old Kenwood MRV-T500 had a single sided circuit board! I had an issue in my old one and they used to use jumpers to add strength for current flow along traces and sure enough the trace was burnt in several places between the jumpers!

It's easier to snip the leads from the component then desolder them one by one from the board. It'll help keep you from delaminating traces.

Those pads were DOA. Newer designs are sometimes better, it's usually a combination of bad PCB design and people getting too heavy and too hot with the soldering iron. I just did an audio lab and the pre drive transistors get so hot the board is brown almost black around those. They were also blown but the pads were moving like hell, I had to add small heatsinks to the new transistors and by this point some of the pads were moving too much. I managed to strengthen from beneath by using small pieces of LED legs bridged across to the closest component on that track, I had to put a few extra hours in to do this mod, there were 2 amps 8 heatsinks in total. More than half of the tracks needed strengthening. If I was better in circuit design I would probably find a solution that didn't get so hot. I'm wondering if I missed something small that is causing these to get so hot. Perhaps a small glass diode or something? Perhaps all the Audiolab 8000 series get this hot.

I been having trouble with my banana clips or whatever they're called I thought i had 4 blown channels for like 2 or 3 days I stripped it all down re ran wiring Found a few frays and thought ill just clip it flat and re do the connectors Tried again no avail Took banana clamps off went straight wire to post terminals and al are back working I dont understand i thiught those clips were better than just wire contact but it seems that isnt the case Lastly about the clips bodys beng metal theh touch at times red to black channel to channel Wuth no insulation so i thought it mightve arked or blown or something but its all working as of yet

I tried to contact you on your ABOUT page where I discovered your email. I emailed and no JOY... I have a 75 pound amp that needs servicing... Its large enough that you'll need a bigger desk for your videos...
@The_Active_Region7 жыл бұрын
I don't have the room the do that large of an amp nor do I have schematics for it. This channel is meant to help people fix their own amplifiers. I want people to understand I am not a repair business and don't have the time to take on everyone's projects. I hope you understand. I will sometimes on occasion take on amps that I have the service information for to teach how to approach amplifier repair.

I do but not in this case, the pads were fragile.

@jonka16 жыл бұрын
Kev31779 I don't understand your reply. If the pads are fragile then all that heating and re-heating that you did will only make things worse. A sucker would have had them out in a moment. Forgive me but this sounds more like an excuse than a reason.

heat the 3 pins up and they just fall out, your putting far to much heat on it, its only 3 pins so why try to desoler it
