It's funny how you didn't even mention or pay any attention to the tortoises mating in the background. With that many sulcatas, it must be just a common occurrence. Nice enclosure.

It would be weird if there weren't any breeding, then I might have been thrown off guard. 😂

That's a LOT of sulcatas! :D They're all so cool looking. I'm sure they're a lot to take care of, too. :/ It's one of the reasons I will probably never buy one. The adult size needs a lot of space to be properly cared for.

How much land do you have? Looking to bless my Sulcatas with a grazing area just like that

This is great. I'm in the East valley, and am worried about my 7 year old Sulcata boy. I have an igloo with a heat lamp, a wool blanket and a moving blanket wrapped around the outside, to avoid fire issues, lots of Timothy hay inside, and a thick towel over the door so he can go in and out. But, he hardly comes out in this weather. Also keep a shallow water dish inside there for humidity and hydration. The small box turtle will come out to eat but he stays in. I'm so worried about him. I do open the door on warmer days. But it has been a cold winter here this year. 😐 I put a cactus pad inside in hopes he will eat. Is this normal for him to stay inside like that? Also wanted to add that I keep a tarp over the top of the shelter.

Hey Jen, It's common for them to get less active in the winter but that the same time he should be coming out at least every few days to eat, drink, graze, etc. The weather has been warm enough lately for him to roam around so he may have gotten too cold somewhere along the line. What heat lamp are you using? I'd strongly suggest a 100 watt Ceramic Heat Emitter. They produce tons of heat and no light making them perfect for winter heated shelters. Do you have a heat gun to read temps inside the igloo and on his shell? They are a must have when raising tortoises. I'd suggest moving him out in the sun while it's 70 degress and above and then making sure he gets back in his heated shelter at night. Do that for a few weeks and the sun along with the night time heat should get him going again. Let me know if his nose is runny or you notice any bubbles coming out of his nose. That is a sign of a respiratory infection from being too cold. Email me at azsulcata@gmail.com with any questions and to keep me posted on how he's doing, thanks!

@@azsulcata Well I sure appreciate your reply! I brought him in the house the other morning, as I can't coax him out of the dogloo. So he moved around slow and tried to burrow under under a chair, and being a bulldozer, of course got stuck. He ate some dark leafy greens, and most of a cactus pad. He let me pet him and scratch his shell. He has no drianage from eyes, mouth or nose. Breathing well. I think he looked a little dry skinned. But also used to seeing him getting wet in his pool or hose last Summer. Other than that he seems ok. I am going to bring him out in the mornings like you said. Great idea. He seems ok, unfortunately, where we just moved to has no grass 😑, but I go out to the desert and get it for him. Only place with no pesticides! So thank you so much and I will reach out to you again with an update. Do you take visitors at your place?

How do the tortoises do on 100+ degree days? Is burrowing a must to keep them cool? Or can a cool hide work?
@azsulcata6 жыл бұрын
I utilize misting systems, wallow pits, and I spray them and the surrounding areas down daily. Mine don't burrow for the most part because they have enough shelter and shaded areas to escape the sun. The holes you see in the video are from females nesting. Also keep in mind when it comes to shade that an enclosure giving shade in the sun really just acts as an oven. You need shade over the shelters if that makes any sense.

What type of insulation is that and where can you get it ?
@azsulcata3 жыл бұрын
It's foam board insulation which I got at Home Depot.
