Awesome video! Wish I would have separated my winter lawn from the tortoises! Mine popped up and can’t grow up before the tortoises eat it! Great idea! Post the link of those heaters as well! My CHE can’t keep up I don’t think

Awesome video. I'm thinking of relocating to Tucson. I hear it's a little cooler there. Do you think a lot of your set ups could be implemented there?

I always hear that if a tortoise can see through it they’ll walk through it. You don’t have problems with them trying to break through the fencing ?
@azsulcata2 жыл бұрын
This is extremely heavy duty fencing so it's never been an issue. They eventually learn they can't get out. We get flood irrigation here so my fencing has to allow water through.

Do you fertilize your grass to keep it like that? Thx for the video
@azsulcata3 жыл бұрын
Yes I used a pet safe fertilizer once a year and also keep them off of it in a separate enclosure for a month just to be extra safe.

What kind of heater do you use. I am getting ready to set up a sulcata tortoise in phoenix
@azsulcata3 жыл бұрын
Any wall mounted patio space heater will do. I'd highly recommend getting one with a built in timer so you can set it to turn off in the morning if you want it to. I purchased mine from Amazon and have three different kinds, they all work the same. Just type in "wall mounted space heater".

@@azsulcata great. Thank you so much for the quick reply. I've actually had my tortoise for a few years and I just bring him into a small plastic baby pool in my living room when it gets to cold at night but he is getting too big for that, I've watched many videos about making enclosure for them, but none specific to phoenix Arizona, and most that are so elaborate, i've just been putting it off. Great info and video, I will be a subscriber for future videos.

Do you allow your tortoises to burrow? I'm in the Phoenix area as well and lately I'm having all sorts of shell issues. My large one seems to be wearing the top of his shell away slowly. Also during the last couple weeks of heavy rain now Im worried I was dealing with fungus or rot of some sort. I'm just frustrated with their health lately and I'm not sure if I'm over exaggerating of if it's justified.

No I don't allow them to burrow. As soon as it starts I throw a cinder block in there and cover it up so they can't dig again. Luckily I don't have to deal with it very often now. If you keep that up and provide them with temperature controlled housing they will stop eventually. You just have to stay on top of it.

@@azsulcata OK that's an idea but how do you keep them cool enough in the summer?
@azsulcata2 жыл бұрын
@@HindsightFPV I have enough mature trees on my property that between that, a daily spraying, and wallow ponds they stay plenty cool. My shed is insulated, mostly under a tree, and if I spray it down a couple times a week it doesn't get above about 90 in there on the hottest days. You can also add a small window or wall AC unit to cool it off in the afternoons. For adult Sulcatas ideally I recommend an insulated shed to make all that possible. Burrowing is great for temperature control but comes with such a wide variety of problems.

@@azsulcata yeah I went the burrow route and I feel like I'm dealing with those issues. My tortoise enclosure is buried in the ground about a foot and a half and the sides have dirt piled onto the side like a big mound with a roof. I'm struggling to keep the interior temp in the mid 90s + but that's with no overhead shade. Figured the burrows would be a good idea but now I'm regretting it especially when it gets rainy. May be looking at an overhaul when temps start to cool.

What kind of heaters are those?
@azsulcata8 ай бұрын
Wall mounted infrared patio heaters. Tons of options, make sure you get one with a timer so you can set it to automatically turn off.

I have 3 tortoises I bought from you. Love them very much. I am hoping it’s one boy and 2 girl. How old they they need to identify gender?
@azsulcata3 жыл бұрын
You can start to tell of they are male or female once they get to be about 12" big.
