Hi! Is it possible to say "recommend that she takes (with "s") or (that) she should take"? I've heard it and read it but I'm not quite sure about the differences among all these versions. Could you please expand a little bit on this topic? Thanks! Gaby.
@EnglishwithMax3 жыл бұрын
Good questions. People sometimes add the S (e.g. takes) in spoken language, but it's not really grammatically correct. Yes, you can use "should" in these sentences as well. The meaning stays the same. :)
@GabrielaAttar3 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishwithMax Thank you for your prompt reply! Would you say that the version with "should" is more formal or the version without it is more formal? THANK YOU VERY MUCH
@EnglishwithMax3 жыл бұрын
@@GabrielaAttar No worries! I'd say they're the same in terms of formality, but it's mainly Britons who use the "should" structure. Generally speaking, I think it's more common not to use "should".

@@EnglishwithMax You can't imagine how much I appreciate your interesting and useful comments because I feel we (teachers of English) worldwide may read and study a lot about what is grammatically correct and possible in English, but we don't have the so-called native-speaker intuition when it comes to using a grammar structure in daily life. A structure may be grammatically possible, but it may have fallen into disuse and we (non-natives) don't know it. I live in Argentina and I love English with all my heart, so your comments are really important for me. Thank you very much!

@@GabrielaAttar Oh, I didn't realise you were a teacher as well! I know what you mean. I lived in France for about six years and I'd say my French is quite advanced, but I'm still often unsure about style and connotations in French. I think what makes it even trickier is that native speakers don't always agree! :D

"All the evidence suggests (that) he stole the money." "There's no absolute proof, but all the evidence suggests (that) he's guilty."

Very good question! I admit I hadn't thought about that. I suppose because the meaning is different. So we don't use the subjunctive if "suggest" means "indicate".

It may seem weird but, although Portuguese tenses are harder, in this case, I do prefer them. I mean, we follow the verbs with the according tense, so we say: recomendo que pegue (present subjunctive) um táxi, recomendei que pegasse (past subjunctive) um taxi. In english what marks the past is only the first verb which is a bit confusing at first: I recommend/recommended/have recommended he TAKE a taxi. The second verb simply doesn't follow 🤣😵💫 but we can always use should to mark the past.

Would you please assist me with how to differentiate past and present subjunctive mood, using the 👉 clause 👉👉THAT. Example: 😀 Suppose that you met(past subjunctive mood) the president next week, what would you say to him? or I recommended that he took(past subjunctive mood) a taxi tomorrow morning....... I guess those sentences are right because I used (past subjunctive mood=expresses hypothetical situations) and regardless of the verbs (met and took) are in their past form of indicative mood, it doesn't have nothing to do with past tense of indicative mood but it refers to "past subjunctive mood" which is utilized for unreal actions where past subjunctive mood always reflects and expresses further possibilty and more vaguely probability that something happens than (present subjunctive mood=suppose that you meet the president next week, what would you say to him? or I recommended that he take a taxi tomorrow morning) since "subjunctive mood" is a declarative mood rather than a tense mood like indicative mood. As in Spanish Portuguese French Italian language etc. I do need your immidiate help to understand this... thanks a lot!! 🤷♂️🤲
@EnglishwithMax3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure what your question is, but if it's in the past the sentence should be: I recommended that he take a taxi the following morning. In a "that" clause after verbs like "recommend", it's more correct to use the present subjunctive. If it's a hypothetical situation, you could say: If I met the president next week, I would recommend that he take a taxi the following day.

If it is wrong please make it right with explanation. I have watched your video ;however ,i want to correct my doubts more clearly ... If you have time please correct my sentence ....
@EnglishwithMax2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Your sentences are grammatically correct (although it should be "to a clinic"), but the "to me" and "should" are more or less redundant. It's a question of personal preference and style, but I think it's simpler and neater just to say: - He suggested that I go to Canada. - She proposed that I go to a clinic. We would normally only use "to me" in these situations if you wanted to make it very clear that the person was speaking to you and not to somebody else. Compare: - He suggested to me that I go to Canada. - He suggested to Sarah that I go to Canada. If you say "He suggested that I go to Canada", we assume that he was speaking to you. Regarding "should", you can use it in these sentences, but I personally think it's unnecessary. I hope that helps!
