Can’t wait to try this. So far you are only the second coach who has taught this on KZbin that I’ve found and I’ve viewed dozens and dozens on the serve. Thank you!

This was really good for me. I coil my upper body and shoulders plenty and have good knee bend but I always feel off-balance. Now I know it's because my hips are following my upper body too much. Really excited to finally have more balance on my serve. Thanks, coach! (To the people struggling to understand, it's basically this--you want to coil your upper body towards the back fence and your lower body into the court. This increases your overall coil, as you're lengthening your spring. Your feet of course remain semi open, pinpoint or not.)

Tried this today, sent down 70 serves, initially I had trouble coordinating but it became easier as I progressed...noticed the improvement in speed quickly..also was able to send down the line & corner serves on ad side with more accuracy due to rotation towards the direction of the serve...I noticed slight difficulty in serving wide on deuce side as I could not time the spring uncoiling well so I tossed a bit to the left & could access the corner better...overall I improved my accuracy & the movements felt natural...will try to implement in the match...thank you for your awesome coaching

Coach! I’ve got to voice just how good your content is. ‘It’s pretty, pretty, pretty good.’ -Larry David Your word choice is deliberate, your camera angles are thoughtful. ☺️ Hope you have an amazing week out there coach.

Great video, something to practice with shadow swings on the patio. I need to work on this.

Interesting concept but I don't follow your description in the pro videos. The discussion in the video suggests loading with shoulders rotating back and hips rotating forward. Do you mean that the hips lead the forward/upward drive while the shoulders are still coiling? Or, do you mean the shoulders rotate back while the hips shift (not rotate) forward toward the net? With Fed, the hips seem to shift forward toward the net after his maximum knee bend, but I don't see the hip rotation till the drive forward/upward from the legs. With Sharapova, she starts with the hips facing the net post and seems to face her hips to the side (hips coil back not forward) as she tosses. In those pro videos, at what point do you see the hips rotating forward counter to the shoulders? I think what you are describing may be used by some of the pinpoint stance servers who bring their back foot past their front foot (unlike Sharapova). For example, Wawrinka seems to do what you describe.

Very similar to my interpretation; it would be good if this could be clarified. It looks to me that, rather than hips and torso going in opposite directions during the toss, the hips rotate back towards the net early, thereby creating the coil/stretch, then the torso rotates. No different to a forehand where the body turns more than the hips, the hips rotate back first, followed by the torso, then the arm etc. From my experience this is not so counter intuitive as what appeared to be suggested. Grateful for clarification.

amazing tip as always

There's something to this. But the explanation doesn't quite translate into what happens on the platform stance. Perhaps a different way to think about this is that the lower body STOPS rotating and allows the upper body (in links) to overtake it.

Steve, Great, thought provoking content again! My interpretation of (especially) your last statement and what @JoshuaCongo said is to first coil the upper body. Since I serve with a platform stance. I then shift my body weight forward almost completely onto the front leg - and then go after the ball. I assume that I’m achieving the two opposite force based on my recent results. I actually hit a second service topspin ace as well as other unreturned second serves using your advice. I can’t remember the last time this any of this happened.:) Great stuff!

I made this change tonight to my platform stance and it immediately changed everything. I had been rotating my feet back toward the fence in an effort to get more coil and this has blown my mind. By not rotating the feet I’m easily able to jump up and into the court and be pointed in the right direction.

" I had been rotating my feet back toward the fence in an effort to get more coil" Sampras started with front foot more parallel to baseline rather than the 45 d angle. It is fine to do that if you want. I think the key, as you mention, is not to rotate the front foot *during* the service motion. 🤔

To coil for a right hander Steve... Hips to the LEFT, Shoulders to the RIGHT. I'm wondering if you know of any exercise that I can strengthen my core to optimize this uncoiling 🤔 I have a medecine ball which should encourage better rotation but I'm looking to optimize my springiest uncoiling possible. Can you advise me what exercise you'd see as optimum for uncoiling most proficiently? Thanks I have no difficulty with a pinpoint stance straight forward but if I can train my core with muscle memory it would be really helpful with so much else going on. Thank you, Rich Ireland.

This is great. The countering rotations is a huge point. As a physics person I did not think the centripetal/centrifugal force bit at the beginning was accurate or particularly useful, but the rest was extremely good. I wish you should show the feet stuff with a platform stance as well, but there is a Fed clip to help us.

I hear that Federer guy is good. We have nearly the same amount of Grand Slams if you just ignore the first digit in his cumulative titles.

Pic at 05:22. If I understand correctly, the player's hips are turned away from the net at 20 degrees and the player's shoulders are turned away from the net at roughhly 46 degrees. Is this correct? Just want to confirm that you can get a roughly accurate measurement of the coil from this camera angle or if a different camera angle is better. I get confused if the 46 degrees is actually a measure of shoulder tilt in the front/back dimension (tossing arm pointing to sky would be 90 degrees and student is halfway there) rather than a measurement of shoulder coil in the *other* dimension.
@topspin1715 Жыл бұрын
@@Better_Call_Raul Sounds too complicated. Just try rotate upper body so that left shoulder is in line with the left toe which is pointing approximately 45 degrees relative to baseline. If you can achieve 20.5 degrees and 46.9 degrees and hit a serve more power to you. My brain couldn’t do that.
@Better_Call_Raul Жыл бұрын
@@topspin1715 I get the general idea. Not trying to overcomplicate it and definitely not trying to copy those exact numbers... Just curious if the back view camera angle can roughly measure shoulder and hip coil.

Thanks again for this great video. But I still have a question, what this foot movement with a serve with plate form stance?
@oneminutetennis Жыл бұрын
Hi rody The foot movement is to emphasize not rotating your front foot back with your body. On a platform stance, just make sure it doesn't rotate, or, use the little cup of water as guidance. I could have added this point, but the video is longer than normal already. Glad your enjoying the channel. Do you have any other tennis issues that I could help with? If so let me know www.oneminutetennis.com

The serve looks easy but is the hardest stroke to master well. Players who have a good serve are able to psychologically dominate...

I have the same problem as the student at 06:28. The left front foot starts off behind the line, but after the toss is released, the left front foot swivels slightly forward and touches the line (foot fault). How to correct this? And is this a serious problem? 🤔
@blaskbla Жыл бұрын
In translation, do not rotate your feet until you coil the upper body. The analogy between centripetal and centrifugal force needs to be more accurate.
@henrytoussant9385 Жыл бұрын
I don't get it. Isn't this simply saying to rotate the upper body further back than the lower body so you get rotational hip-shoulder separation.
@oneminutetennis Жыл бұрын
Hi Henry, Sorry. No. If you do that, the lower body will be inert and move with the upper body. Think about the ballet step. This will move your lower body forward, while your upper body rotates backwards. Can you not see this difference in Ciara's serve? Does this make sense?
