Hey everyone! Welcome back! In today's video we get back to working on my 2008 Ford Explorer V6 4.0 SOHC. After replacing the timing chains in the last video, we finish up by repairing our broken valve cover, replacing the water pump and installing an awesome looking brand new aluminum radiator from the guys over at AlloyWorks! Watch as we get this mean machine back up and running, but not before running into some serious problems. Luckily, there is nothing we can't overcome! I hope you guys enjoy the drama! Thanks for watching!

Fantastic video! I really appreciate watch a pro at work. I am a mechanic myself and also like to instruct as I go. You go over the top with simple and to the point instruction. You also showed a few problems you ran into along the way with wire harness issues and injector issues. As you know you will always run into additional problems when you break down an engine. Well done. Other videos just gloss over these new found problems. Keep up the good work. I know the amount of work you go through to complete the final edit that’s where 90% of your time goes in making one of these videos. Thank you, very well done. Having a 2006 with the same issue after going through high water and a rough engine showing a P1336 code and a cracked valve cover, luckily on the drives side, it is time to get my hands dirty.

Great video. Way to stick with it. The next time you are at the home improvement store or even wally world go to the garden section and get a cheap garden sprayer. They are usually less than ten bucks. The container itself is clear so you can see the level of the fluid inside. I have a half dozen of them in my shop. One for each kind of Mercon, two for Honda VTM and transmission fluid and a couple with different gear lubes in them. The small ones hold a gallon of fluid and the wands are plastic and can be heated and bent for the hard to get to openings. If you label them you will always be ready to go. The best part is it only takes a few pumps to pressure them up and you are good to go. At first I was worried about how the fluids would react with the pump and seals but the only ones we have had to replace were melted or had been damaged from neglect.

Nice repair! You can also drill a tiny hole at the end of each crack to help reduce their urge to travel further. That JBWeld almost matches the valve cover, like it's made for it, lol.

A piece of fabric placed on top of the epoxy and soaked in it will reinforce the repaired area, even using a piece of paper towel. You can also try this technique while using superglue.

Good job! I like how you explain everything in detail. Sad those 4.0l had so many T chain issue's. I'm surprised you didn't change the transmission fluid, especially with coolant leaking into the system. For the amount of work, I would of replaced the engine or sold it as is. Cheers bud👍

Glad to see the Explorer back on the road... wish I had known about the all aluminum radiator when I was doing timing on my ride. I did do the aluminum thermostat housing though. After I did the timing on my 4.0 SOHC, I had an issue with the fuel rail pressure sensor ~1 week later. It wanted to stall/threw a code. I replaced it and it solved the problem. I briefly had that feeling of dread when I started up my Mountaineer and it was running rough... fortunately, I had forgotten to tighten down some studs on the exhaust manifold... Easy fix, but I admit I was stressing for a minute (especially with the cost of all those OEM parts).

Another great video! One thing I always do at the end of a tear-down like you did is get the local injector guy to test and rebuild all the injectors. The last truck I did had runnability problems after doing a lot of work on it and it was the injectors that needed cleaning that fixed the problem. That tranny fluid fill is crazy! Nice job, and excellent narrative and videography!

One thing about repairing cracks like this it drill a small hole at the end of each crack (about a 1/16th drill bit) and it will help prevent the crack from expanding.

Wow! Great video and tons of information. In short, very happy you buckled down and fix your Explorer. It looks very nice in the videos. That being stated, I am VERY disappointed with all the wiring issues. It is not uncommon to tape the wires at the connector and then go over the "slit tube", but the damage in this video is absurd. I cannot believe the vehicle functions. Bear leads? Degrading Insulation? WOW? Looks like German "wiring" that is intended to "bio degrade" at end of vehicle life. GRRRRRRRR!

These Explorers seem to really suffer with their wiring harnesses. I have an 06 that’s on it’s second set and going on it’s third. I thought getting one from a junkyard would remedy but that’s when I realized that it was a manufacturer defect and not specific to my Exploder. We also get a ton of Exploders at the shop with nasty misfire or harsh shifts that are caused by shorted wires.

I bought one of these alloyworks for my 08 mountaineer and it has been a nightmare. Why this company does such a poor job of supplying the customer with the appropriate fittings is beyond me. In addition to that they are located in China so good luck getting a technical question answered. I am about to go to a custom hose fitting outfit with the fitting which came screwed into the radiator and the ford quick disconnect fitting and asking them to mate these up for me. I have already wasted time and money ordering fittings that I thought would fit but totally goose eggs x2. I can only hope the rest of the radiator is aces because it will have to salvage the reputation of this purchase for me. On the cosmetic side of things, looks awesome and trick!
