In today's case study, we look at this 2013 Ford Escape with a 1.6l 4 cylinder engine. The customer complaint is that the vehicle will intermittently not crank and when it does run and drive, it runs very poorly. The shop took a look at it and found that they had no communication with the scan tool. So they decided to call me. Follow along as I take you step by step through my diagnostic and troubleshooting procedure. So that we can fix this vehicle. Along they way, you will learn how to troubleshoot complicated CAN BUS systems on these vehicle. Thanks for watching!

I forgot to mention at the beginning of the video that the vehicle was an intermittent No Crank. Sometimes it would not crank at all and showed a message on the dash that said "Starting System Fault".

If I suspect a particular module may be responsible for a short to power, rather than looking all over the car for it, I will pull the fuses to that module. It should cut the power to the feed wires also. If you pulled the fuse to the ocm, your comm. network probably would have returned to normal. Then you could replace the fuse and unplug the module to determine if the short is in the wiring harness or the module. It doesn't work all of the time, but can be a real time saver. In this business, if you can save time it,s a plus. Especially when it's a hundred degrees and you're working outside.

I have a 2013 Escape, 1.6L SE with 140K miles. One day, out of the blue with no warning, it would not start. It was showing multiple fault warnings, including starting system fault. Two different mechanics couldn't isolate the cause. After watching this video, I was able to determine that the issue was a failed safety restraint module. I disconnected the wiring harness under the passenger seat and everything went back to normal.

I haven’t finished watching the whole video yet, but would like to make a suggestion. The use of a regular DMM to confirm the shorted line to either the +12 or to Ground can be further enhanced by using a Milliohm meter to determine where on the bus has a lower Ohm reading and thus lead you closer to the shorted line, whether it be internal to a module or on the bus itself.

Now i am stuck on a vehicle 2004 toyota qualis 2.4 gst, the problem is that there is no voltage coming to the a/c compressor, all the fuses are ok the relay is good, the a/c control switch is good i have even changed to a new one but still unable to remove the fault. If u could guide me i will be thankful.

Great diagnosis ERIC hard to focus when it’s that hot plus sweat in the eyes. May I ask since u scanned what modules where communicating and have a wiring diagram could u have pulled fuses to narrow down which or what modules remove the hi voltage. Good or bad approach?

Thanks for making these videos. I just watch a different vid of yours about fixing obd pins. I got up this morning ready to tackle it, and in my car (2015 ford fusion hybrid) there is a "smart data link connector" It has an obd port on one side, and on the other side, the car connects to it via a different harness. When I search for the part number online FG9T-14F642-AB, I ONLY see used parts, nothing new. I've tried taking the unit apart. The plastic housing comes apart, revealing a circuit board inside, but the circuit board doesn't not readily want to come out, and there's no way I'm gonna use any force on it. I'm not seeing anything on youtube dealing with these 'data link connector' or 'data link modules'. Do you know anything about them? Can they be repaired? Are they all the same from one model to another (will a FG9T-14F642-AB from another 2015 work on my hybrid)?
