We had an 8th gen civic (06-11) at my dealership that had misfires on 2 cylinders we swapped coils, plugs fuel injectors Checked compression and cylinder leak down tried ECM/PCM clear and relearn still nothing we were stumped we called tech line before we put it through for a PCM they advised up they have seen some civics with aftermarket serpentine belts have excessive metal flakes in the belt messing with the signal on the crankshaft causing ghost misfires so we removed the belt and wouldn’t you know no more misfires replaced with factory belt and took care of issue

I just did my timing belt and had a similar issue. I took it to a professional to check my timing belt, paid for his time. He told me the timing marks were not off and he saw no issue with my timing belt job. He did see multiple misfires and a rich code. The rich code was not there before hand. He noticed the CEL come on and off while he had it at his shop to test drive it. After doing this and a valve adjustment. It's working fine. I think the valve adjustment for me was the defining fix. I can't say for sure.

My scanner can detect injector pulse to see if the injector is firing fuel. That’s one easy way to determine if the injector is faulty or not or use a lode tester to see if the injector harness side is getting power! But swapping the Bad coil with another coil is an easy simple test as well thank you Eric for another video!

I love my Launch X431 Pad2. It's proven to be the best overall scan tool I have ever owned. Now I have a question. Why would the Honda Pilot need a CKP relearn if it was never disturbed? Besides replacing or even just disconnecting and reconnecting that sensor, what else could cause that issue?

I had a bad ignition coil after 100,000 miles in my 4Runner. Instead of buying a denso ignition coil, I bought an NGK because I was going to do a full tune-up in 3 weeks. That NGK ignition coil kept setting off my check engine light with misfires. NGK makes great spark plugs, but do not buy their ignition coils. Once I replaced that NGK coil, everything was fine. And it was even better after I changed all six with denso ignition coils.

I don’t know if anyone in the chat ever uses a propane inrichment tool to find misssfires due to a faulty injector or vacuum leak. But it’s a great and fast way to do it. If you find that the ignition system is ok and suspicious of a faulty injector. Use your propane inrichment tool to slowly add propane into the intake. Then watch your missfire data. Or smooth running value. You will see the counter slowdown or stop all together. In many cases see the engine smooth out. OTC part # 7148. I also use it to diagnose A/F and o2 sensors. It’s good for diagnosing converters also. Already said vacuum leaks, do that while Looking at ST and LT fuel trims.

I would add that on Hondas you should do the PCM Reset that's in the scan tool, then do the CKP relearn and idle relearn.

Me and eric had a discussion on this and I’m thinking that because misfires are seen thru the crank sensor. So when the engine misfires the pcm picks up the difference in crank speed and registers it as a misfire. And I’m aware some pcms shut off injector pulse is they notice a misfire on a cylinder to protect the catalytic converter. So my theory is the misfire is learned to the pcm, as protection to the catalytic converter. So to clear the learn misfire strategy a crank relearn has to be performed. Sounded good in my head when I did this

After all this time that you had the thinktool pro how do you like it. And what's the difference between it and the Launch tool and for someone that doesn't do much work like that which one do you Suggest to get
@ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO Жыл бұрын
They are both very similar as far as capabilities. The main difference to me is that the Launch tablet is an open operating system. Meaning, you can download apps from the play store and surf the internet freely. The Thinktool is a closed OS, so it doesn’t allow you to add any apps. For this reason I prefer the Launch.
@ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO Жыл бұрын
Thinktool says that this is done to make sure the diagnostic software runs faster and smoother. Also, so that the user doesn’t download any apps that could affect the functionality of the diagnostic software.

I have had an 11 honda accord once that would throw random misfire codes and I would perform a crank relearn and it would fix the issue' but the issue would return after a few startups. I came to find out the somehow a remanufactured starter that had recently been installed was somehow messing with the crank signal and causing the problem. Replaced the starter and relearned the ckp again afterwards and no more problems.

It is very intermittent but I don't have the scan tool you have. I do have one that allows me to get into mode 6 so I can see misfires. Just an FYI: I have an 08 Odyssey. Those have the same V6 as the Pilots...and I believe all other Honda's with a V6. Some, but not all, of those engines have VCM...Variable Cylinder Management. Basically, as you reach highway speeds, it disables cylinders to increase fuel mileage. Problem is, sometimes it decides to start disabling cylinders, even if it doesn't need to. It leads to people "chasing" misfires, and never catching them. At first, that's what I thought was the problem here. In case you have a Honda with that V6, and start having misfires, and replace everything that is supposed to fix a misfire, yet you still have misfires, it could be the VCM.

Awesome job! How does the scanner / ecu know when a misfire occurs? Are they only spark related according to a scanner?
@billyyoder81712 жыл бұрын
ECU/ECM/PCM knows when a cylinder misfires by the speed of the engine slowing down just after the module commands a coil to fire. The module can see this and calculate this speed change in microseconds. Misfires can occur from various issues; spark, fuel, too much air, too little air, timing, noisy crank signal, wiring, and module.

Cylinder 3 is usually the problem with these engines. The Cylinder management turn that cylinder on and off more than any other cylinder. It will run all 6, or it will run 1,2,4,6 or it will run 4,5,6. I think this exposes cylinder 3 and the injector to unusual wear as well as mismanagement if the cms. I'm $900 into this same issue. I changed the plugs and coils at home just because they were extremely overdue, $400 in parts. It didn't solve the issue so I brought it to the dealership for a proper diagnosis. He suspected it needed a valve adjustment as it was also extremely overdue. Another $500. The issue still isn't resolved. It's very intermittent, on start up or after sitting, so I'm leaning towards fuel injector malfunctioning or losing pressure overnight. Though that job is also a bit costly and labor intensive on this engine. Thus I may try and temporarily delete the cms just as an experiment to see if it stops the misfire code. Idk though, it's a frustrating situation.
@jptrainor Жыл бұрын
I've also experienced that cylinder 3 misfire issue in my own 2010 VCM J35 engine and have noticed in many videos where the problems are surfacing in cylinder three first. I also concluded that that is for the reason you identified. If anything is becoming marginal due to age it does seem that cylinder three is the first to expose the issue.

Thanks for this great video. I have an 08 Pilot and getting misfire on cylinders 3,5,6. I changed all the spark plugs and did that coil swap trick. The misfires did not move. I am either thinking it might need valve adjusments ( if that can cause multiple misfire) or recently I used an injector cleaner and maybe that messed up my injectors. I also changed my alternaor recently with a OEM denso one. After the frist start after changing the alternator the car did hesitate and eventually turn off. But after a few more tries it did stay on and ran fine for 2-3 weeks. What do you think ?

I have an 2007 Honda pilot with the 4WD EXL navigation. Anyone who has intermittent problems with electrical go wrong with a PCM/ECM open circuit power relay code for P0685 replace the Relay for that because that will fix it most of the time or even the battery can also cause that code to come back up and make the car try to stall or jolt while you’re driving so just be careful if you have an older Honda/Acura because they will happen like that if you don’t change that relay or battery
