A candid interview with Catamaran Specialist Wiley Sharp on the benefits of a Catamaran.
Yacht Specs and Prices hubs.ly/H0m3NcQ0
Wiley Sharp grew up on the West Coast of Florida where he was exposed to sailing and fishing at a very young age. Sailing and cruising became a mainstay in Wiley’s life after high school when he went to sea to earn his captain’s license. This took him down to Cape Town, South Africa to face some of the toughest seas in the world.
www.denisonyachtsales.com/2013...
After earning his 200-ton license, Wiley went to work in the Bahamas as a charter captain. From there his love for the sea and hard work ethic took him to St. Vincent as an operations manager for a large charter company. After a period of time in St. Vincent he moved to Grenada to open and manage a new charter operation with a fleet of 20 yachts and catamarans.
Wiley’s experience gained over thousands of miles at sea, countless hours maintaining boats, and his love for all things boating, makes him a great choice when looking for your next cruising yacht.

I asked this question of a seasoned commercial skipper and he rates cats ahead of monohulls ... he skippers a massive cat which ferries drive aboard cars to the islands ... it can also get right up on the beach due to the shallow draft and deploy the ramp directly onto the beach to let the fourwheel drive vehicles off.

Cats have some advantages over monohulls. But having sailed a Cat from Coccus keeling to Perth WA 1700nm into SE trades. 30kns of wind, very strong current, and 2 metre waves. The best we could get was 120 degrees to the wind and waves. after 5 days we were 100nm from Christmas Island which is ENE from coccus After 12 days we crossed the rum line we had sailed less that 500nm. Sailing in these conditions give me a monohull anyday.

you are of course right, if you can live with the heeling... one has to weigh the advantages and disadvantages. Simple ;-) Cats have a hard time coping with loads to the rigging! I am working on a rig that consumes most of the loads.

This has been one of the most useful comments I have seen yet. This is exactly what concerns me. Us Aussies know all about heavy seas.. it is no Mediterranean down here! People have no idea of the waves. I was on the cat going between Melbourne and Tasmania, and during that trip we hit two submerged containers which rang the cat like a bell but no damage. And on the news, some poor chap doing some work on a remote island cliff 200m up, was washed into the sea. Can you imagine 200m half a KM up in the air, the water would be so far below you.. like looking over two football fields.. then getting hit with a wave THAT TALL. As you say.. a monohull would not be comfortable.. nothing would. But you would be able to travel at your cruise speed in the direction you want. I just wish a good monohull builder could build a boat in less than 3 years (Bering's current wait list).

I am a non-sailor pretty much willing to buy a sailing boat. Multihulls usually outweigh the monohulls except for one thing: flipping over and the lack of self-righting capabilities. How serious can this get and in which windspeed levels or waves?

good question Alex. we have a few catamaran experts onhand to assist with specifics concerns just like this. Id suggest contacting WIley Sharp here: www.denisonyachtsales.com/2013/02/florida-yacht-broker-wiley-sharp/ . Hes a great guy and knows a lot of about the pros and cons of cats.

Cats flipping as you put it is a misnomer probably started by hobie cat racers and people who push the envelope. Statistics show that cats are safer in rough seas and winds but they can be extremely fast luring sailors into the illusion that speed in high winds is a safe thing to do. The Ancient mariners in Polynesia sailed cats in the heaviest seas and winds in the world far before the European sailors ventured far and these boats are the forerunners of the cat. If a mono capsizes you are done cats can be righted. Cheers !

Alex de Souza Yes, Catamarans are harder to upright if they capsize, but I don't think much of anything will capsize one.

Walkertongdee, that was a good comment! And based on fact! I actually like both, cats and monos. Hating one or the other just shows a certain lack of knowledge and competency! ;-) Of course DENISON is in business to sell boats, but that is NOT in itself bad! Expertise is, in the end, the TRUTH you share from experience, not from reading a book, and, of course, the knowledge of engineering, aero- and hydrodynamics. It was always my argument, with cat-haters, that those Polynesians conquered the biggest of our oceans on CAT's, not monohulls. So, there must have been a good reason! ;-)

Hey Denison....Hint: If you can't answer - don't. Saying to contact someone who put out the video and included contact info is just insulting and disrespectful. Better to say nothing and forward the question over to the poster but we all know the poster reads the comments so that isn't even necessary. if you can't answer....don't.

I'll take a cat any day. Monohull sailing is fun for a few hours but what are you going to do the other 20 hours....hold on while sailing and being in each others way at anchor. Mono is less expensive and that can be a factor. I wanna be the guy buying a 60' cat but doesn't know how well it is in close quarters....I want his money!

Thanks, this is a big help as I am receiving all sorts of conflicting info on monohul trawler style like the B77-80 or the same size in a Cat. I want it for open water, to tackle huge seas. I too am based in Australia so you can imagine the seas we get here in the gulfs. We have some of the most dangerous waters in the world. And I want to take my vessel all around the world. Im thinking of either going to get it, or getting it delivered here, then from here going to NZ, up to Asia, then around to Europe and into the Med, then down the Canadian US coast line into South America. The storm survival issue is huge for me. Would a cat survive being hit by a freak wave say 50 foot high ? I know a Bering 77 would.. but would the width of a cat cause it to break ? Can it take those types of forces ? And no need for a seakeeper ? The Cat would cost a LOT more than I was going to spent on a mono.. EUR 15 mil which is about AUD$30 million. This is a fortune to spend on a vessel. A Bering 77 would only cost me AUD$10-12 Mil. So Mono is cheaper. Mono whilst being narrower, has more decks and traditionally more range. But on discussions, a Can can be fitted with extra tanks and also get 6000+ NM range esp if the cat travels at FD speeds like 8-9 kn etc. I have heard a lot about hybrid engines lately but batteries and safety concern me esp. Lithium which for me sounds like a ticking timebomb. Id love to see more content on A vs B. ie Mono hull like the overbuilt Berings, vs a good CE-A rated Cat of the same length. Im very interested in crew quarters, as you dont want to have to exit the interior of uf your vessel in rough seas. I would never ask a crew member to have to exit the main area to go outside to enter a rear crew quarter area. That would be murder. This industry changes so fast I cant keep up with all the changes and the rumors. What makes it worse, is that trying to find someone to act on my behest (Broker) is proving impossible as 5 brokers have now ridiculed me for my needs. I need a yacht with ZERO VOC emission on the inside esp no use of Vinyl (Im deathly allergic). I also want the AC system and any drains prone to mold and bacteria to be either silver or copper alloy so no bacteria or mold can grow on them, as well as a full hepa grade air purifying system on all cabin air intakes esp pre Air Con. Also.. UV lights on the AC too. These are actually quite common in the US albeit more expensive. If I am spending Thirty million AUD on a yacht.. why would I want to save a little cash to get cheaper parts that will make me sick ? Ive had 7 years of mold and chemical related illness. Im rich, I do not have to tolerate it. And I want extra spots, Long range FLIR, Side scan radar, Fogging security system and some other things too. Why not ? So where do people get off laughing at my needs in a yacht ? Does no one want to make a commission on the sale ? FFS this is what I have put up with. Instead of vinyl, use leather or find a ZERO VOC material of any sort that is easy to clean. Get fresh air and reduce humidity so the yacht does not get a mold problem without the AC and dehumidifier becoming the source of that mold.. and have it easy to clean. If Im spending the money I am buying all sorts of things including deep water ROV etc (I intend to look for wrecks, cryptids, and UFO/USO etc because it interests me, and I want my crew to run a video channel for extra cash. I want to live on this vessel full time except when it needs dry dock. I am still going to get a B65 as the backup vessel simply because I can. Im just so over getting into arguments with people who think my desires in a build are silly. Its like me recommending someone allergic to bees, goes and collects honey from a hive without a protective suit. That is the level of insanity. My money, I can spend it how I want. If people want to be in the yarcht sales industry, they need to listen to the customers, and instead of ridiculing the customer.. find out why they want what they want, and meet their needs within the cost parameters. It really is that easy !

Everyone has their wants and needs, so will eventually build my own. I want a 25m Aluminium 5:1 ratio Monohull that can achieve 80km/h on smooth water, have 15-20KW of solar, 10m2 or greenhouse (Inside), 130KW of lead acid battery, 40KW of lithium, wind turbine, 15000 litres of fuel, two large and one small diesel engine with electric motors attached, jet drive, Kite system and much more. Been designing for while to cope with rough waters around AUS and the world. I would never choose to go in rough ocean, but want to survive if I get caught in it. I think 25m is a good length and a sharp narrow bow cuts through waves. The added benefit of Jet drives with 2600 KW of power and inlet closer to the middle of the boat, is it provides suction, so going up a wave the boat actually sticks to it some what instead of flipping backwards like a cat or stern drive boat. At 10km/h I might get 30000k of range with fuel, and more with electricity or kite. That is my dream, a few years yet. Have a look at the FPB Yachts, good luck with your boat.

+polygamous1 Sozou With today's tech , there is no reason to get caught in weather like that As for being able to handle high seas, do a search and you'll find lots of vids of cat, both sailing and powered doing quite fine in high seas. This is not the 1950's, there are catamaran pilot boats, military boats, rescue and coast guard boats all over the world. Catamarans don't make good life boats because they cant self right.

People who sell catamarans, aren't people who own catamarans. It's easy to aquire millionaire tastes when you're around top quality boats every day, like the Porsche salesman who thinks the Boxter is 'boy's stuff' and the 911 is 'the man's choice', yet mysteriously drives a home in a Toyota. Obviously a $500,000 45ft cat is more liveable than a $150,000 45ft monohull, but that's not comparing like with like. For any given budget the choice between one hull or two comes down to whether you want to sail the world's oceans or sunbathe and host dinner parties.

Bragging for self aggrandizement is just plain silly. Its a thin veil that exposes the need to make others believe you are better, smarter or more intelligent than others. Its a negative trait, better to just tell people what you know and if you are really knowledgeable others will praise you and may rightly call you an expert. One has to earn the respect of the title of expert, one cant award it upon themselves. Cheers!
