With a few days off work, I decide to head up to Galloway with my backpack and hammock for some hiking and wild camping. This video is number 1 in a series of UK wild camping videos that I'll be uploading when I get the chance to get out and about here in the UK between overland trips in the mighty Hilux. I put some new gear to the test, most of it bought from Edinburgh based company DD Hammocks.

The secret to hammock camping in the rain is drip lines. When I used used to have the whoopie sling set up I had a drip line each end of the whoopie on both ends of the hammock and one at each end of the tarp (for continuous ridge line running under tarp). Also if using the DD 3x3, try it on the diamond configuration. The daisy chains I use now kinda act as natural drip lines. New sub. 👍

Top video.....one way to prevent water from coming from the tree and down the strap, whoopie sling to the hammock is to get a squash ball, cut in half, make a slit in the curve and then thread the sling through it...ensuring the concave part faces the tree......the water will run down and stop at the half squash ball....used this method in Brunei and Belize jungles👍

@Adventure-Outdoors

Yeah hopefully this will all be over sooner rather than later so we can all get out again. To stop the hammock getting wet I use 'drip lines'; basically a piece of string tied around the hammock straps which stop water dripping down into the hammock. Hi David, the backpack is a Fjallraven Kajka 75. It's definitely not the cheapest 75L backpack out there but like most Fjallraven equipment it's incredibly well made, very high quality and extremely durable; I expect it to last at least 20 years. I'll be using it early Feb for a trip up to the Highlands so I'll take the time to do a review 👍.

Cheers! I was just checking my tyres yesterday, they've got about 36K miles on them and the rear set are wearing slightly quicker than the front so I might swap them around if I get the chance. The tread looks to have been worn by around 50% compared to my new spare tyre. Can't complain really, I reckon they'll be ready for changing at the 50k mark. I'll buy the same again, they've been faultless so far. 👍

Do you mean loch Trool? If so there a couple of places to park, there’s a car park at Bruce’s Stone at the end of the road that runs along the loch. There’s also another just off the road before the loch, next to the old campsite that is now shut. I’ve left the car overnight in both with no problems. If you mean loch Doon then there’s loads of parking by the loch, you’ll easily find a place to leave the car there 👍

Cameron Hay it’s pretty much in the centre of the park. If you drive past the Glentrool visitor centre there are a number of parking options along the road. From there it’s easy to hike along the loch and camp 👍

Nice, on my doorstep I've roamed those hills and fished the wild lochs all my life. Most probably don't realise but Galloway forest isn't actually a forest it's just a big commercial plantation and a large portion of it isn't even Galloway it's in Ayrshire including Loch doon

You’re lucky to live in the area! I’ve been wanting to fish some of the lochs now for a while but so far I’ve only fished loch Ken whilst canoeing. I bought a fly rod last year so hopefully I’ll get a chance to head back up over the summer. Indeed, the forest is one huge plantation. I’ve noticed the remnants of ancient/old woodland around some of the lochs but there’s not much of it left unfortunately. Thanks for watching 👍.

@@Adventure-Outdoors there's hundreds of lochs in the area that are free to fish, all have trout in them. The midgies are horrendous in the summer tho

Under the Scottish Access Code you are allowed to light a fire as long as they are small and kept under control. During prolonged periods of hot weather, campfires are discouraged or sometimes banned though 👍.

The first few words of this video just decided my entire future. Im suddenly forced to move out of the city, and I cant decide whether to move to central or north England, or Scotland. I work online, so for me its finding a relatively cheap place to live where I can finally be close to some wild camping locations. Right now in England there is a huge move to stop wild campers, with game keepers and land managers using thermal cameras, social media surveillance, and quads, to try and drive people off the land. I had no idea that wild camping is enshrined in law in Scotland. You just closed the deal. Im moving to Scotland. Dont hate me because Im from London.

I've heard about the issues with wild camping in certain areas of England, it seems to be confined to a few really popular places in the Peak District (to be honest I have some sympathy for the gamekeepers, they aren't dealing with the likes of you or me, but mainly with groups of halfwits carrying 10kg bags of BBQ fuel up onto the moors etc. so they've enforced a blanket rule against wild camping). I've been camping up in the fells in the Lake District quite a bit recently and there's no problems there, I live in North Yorkshire so also get out into the Dales and the moors with no issues either. The problems arise in really popular areas that attract a lot of wild campers, even in Scotland some places are now restricted due to the mess that gets left behind by idiots. If you are willing to walk for a couple of hours and avoid really popular places you'll have no worries here in the north mate, plus it's just a short drive to Scotland 👍

@@Adventure-Outdoors Thank you very much for the feedback and information. I think your take on it is very sensible. Im sure it must be quite upsetting when hordes of townies turn up, set dangerous fires and dump rubbish. I was always taught to leave no trace, and damage nothing. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Good luck in the woods.
