Hey! I'm Alanna - a thirty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a KZbin video every Tuesday plus an additional video every Saturday on Patreon + YT Memberships. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

@AdventuresAndNaps I have a funny story about beans on toast. While at a Service Station on the M5 I needed breakfast. Noting that beans on toast was £2.50 BUT toast and beans separately were only £1.49 and 50p for toast....So I had my beans and toast separately!! At the till the cashier said "Beans on toast £2.50.." I replied "This is beans AND toast separately...So only £1.99!" After some sighing and eye rolling he let me through!! Kerching!! A victory !! Managed to save 51p!!😅😅😅😅😅

It breaks my head when places have weird pricing like that, surely together is cheaper as it's in 1 packet and takes less handling.. Or when places have lunch time specials but they are only a deli counter and don't make anything fresh after lunch.. So they expect people to pay more for food that has been sitting for probably hours under heat lamps instead of getting a discount to get rid of the extra food that is going to mostly go to waste. 😮‍💨

@@AdventuresAndNaps I'm Canadian also, and just saw your reaction video to "The Isle of Man". I would love to, and be very interested in seeing you do one to "The Fallen of World War II". Warning though that I think you will find it very rough,... it's not a graphic video,... well it is graphs,... but it's the numbers that get you. I would suggest putting your paid promotion at the start, or end only for that one. EDIT: I subscribed to your channel.

For over 17 yearsI dated a Canadian. She came from Vancouver BC but had been living in London for many years before I met her. I used to go on Holiday to Vancouver about every 2 years. Being on the West coast of Canada it has a similar winter climate to England. 2 inches ofsnow brings the middle of Vancouver to a standstill as it would most of England.

1000% agree, I can't imagine how it is possibly eaten otherwise in proper British knife and fork fashion. I think this is the problem, Americans don't know how to eat their own plate at the table. It is absurd. Every child in UK knows how to use a fork'n'knife to eat proper food.

@Varksterable
@Varksterable 11 күн бұрын
Same. My parents both loved being on Dartmoor. And so as a kid living in Torbay, it meant a whole lot of driving on narrow, obscure lanes. The single-lane roads overgrown in Summer before they were cut back were just amazing. So colourful, fragrant, and pretty. (And now, as a driver myself; also bloody terrifying! Especially when the gap isn't even wide enough for _one_ car, and you just have to kind of push through and hope for the best. And with no idea if the greenery is hiding a hedge, a stone wall, or a brick wall. 😬 Or a tractor. 😱🚜 But still pretty. 🌿🌼☘️🌺)

The 'fun' bit around my village is meeting some twit in a Chelsea tractor hogging the middle of the road and going over the speed limit and refusing to move over when they meet you going the other way. Other than that, I enjoy the country roads and don't mind pootling along behind a tractor or even having to almost climb into the hedge when I end up head on to a tractor or the milk tanker... Much more interesting than the motorways/dual carriageways.
@Varksterable

@@cultfiction3865 What a ridiculous, prejudiced, arrogant, blanket generalisation. 😆 (Although in one aspect, factually correct.) They are terrible because they were designed hundreds of years ago for something YOU don't want them to be? Knock it off. Just don't use them, or appreciate how beautiful they are and how much they support the ecosystem a d even economy. You owe a lot more to country lanes then they owe to you.

@@judithmitchell9065 Having to reverse 2 miles down a twiddly lane and for a middle-aged female driver who stares you down when you meet. And then find that there was a parking space 20 yards down the road she could have pulled into. Rural travel is _so_ fun. 😁 But still far better than the M4, M5, M25, tbh.

Well as an ex-Pat from the UK in Canada (Nova Scotia currently) for 54 years, I still cook and eat a lot of British dishes because they are not available any other way. Yes, Beans on Toast is a frequent breakfast after all this time, I do make my own Sausage Rolls (I make my own sausages too as the ones in North America are just awful) and Pork Pies occasionally. Now I do also cook North American dishes such as Barbecues and burgers as I can make my burgers as I like, but Canadian food outside of Quebec does not seem to have a lot of variety in my opinion. The problem with a lot of my meals is that I cannot easily get the ingredients I want to use in my cooking. Try to find mustard pickles (does anyone in Canada eat pickles - the only one I can find is Branston which is great but there are so many more in the UK) - now the HP sauce large size is no longer available?) that I have to grow my own vegetables and make my own for example. Buying these from a British ex-Pat store is very expensive and usually involves shipping costs. Then as far as restaurants go, there is a good local Chinese restaurant that does have a few spicy savoury dishes (I have been to China several times over the years and real Chines food is so different) but a lot of it is more on the sweet side here but also in other places I have lived in Canada. Recently there is a new Indian Restaurant that I have yet to try, but my expectations are not great! Here in NS, there seems to be a dislike of anything too spicy. Another thing is the lack of aged cheese - I can get UK cheeses but they are always in small plastic packets that make a single serving by my standards and not inexpensive. A good strong aged cheddar freshly sliced from a round is not to everyone's taste it seems as the shelves are loaded with marble cheese which is debatably not cheese at all all plastic wrapped of course. There are some good Welsh cheeses that I can get locally which are excellent. Anyway, the choices in the quiz almost all ended up even now choosing the British options with the exception of the issue of roads and driving. I hate that when i visit the UK! I am not sure if that is just prejudice or or based on facts! I am pretty naturalised as a Canadian after all this time.

I'm writing this on Wednesday 22nd Jan, I'm surprised it was raining with you, we haven't had rain here in Leicestershire for quite a few days now, and we've had quite a bit of bright weather. My local small town (pop. C 12,000) has 4 very good chippies as well as Chinese, Indian, Nepalese as well as English restaurants and pizza places. Air Con translates as "destroy climate system". My local town is 1 1/4 miles away, and I often walk there, and within a 5-minute walk once more there are several pubs, 3 major supermarkets, several hairdressers, takeaways, small independent shops, butchers and banks etc. Straight roads mean speeding and lack of attention, boredom etc which equals m re accidents and deaths. The UK roads are some of the safest in the world, the UK has almost 2 times the population of Canada but way less road deaths. In 2023 sadly, 2004 people died on Canadian roads but only 1600 died on UK roads, bad, but still one of the best per capita, per billion miles driven etc. You are much safer driving on British roads.

Food suggestion, try cheesy marmite garlic bread. take a baguette and make cuts almost all the way through. crush some garlic and mix up with butter and apply to one face of each cut. Then put a very thin wipe of marmite on the other face - hardly any marmite is fine. Then fill between each slice with grated cheese and pop into the oven until the bread is toasted and cheese melted...,

Have a walkable, but newer, and boring, soulless town in Canada, or live somewhere in the UK that's older, has character, but is a little isolated that you have to drive everywhere? (not suggesting that a place being Canadian would mean that btw, and there are places here that are plenty soulless)? Go to a British style pub in Canada or a Canadian style bar in the UK?

For a breif second I thought the shadow cast by the palm in the background were creases and folds as if you'd hung sheets up around the room in some sort of preperation for either a home bassed Taskmaster task or a kidnapping.

As a Brit in Canada, you should have beans in Kraft Dinner with real cheese added! It’s awesome 🤩

@@AdventuresAndNaps The dating question is rather poijntless - I'm sure there are both lovely, and awful, people in both countries. So the real answer has to be "it depends on the person, not where they're from".

Canadian KD or Kraft Dinner (known as "Mac & Cheese" in the US) was changed a few years ago and now it's terrible. The best mac and cheese in Canada now is Annie's.

Is Greggs considered the UK's Fast Food joint or something? Like, the thing about Greggs is it's fine for what it is, but it's not a restaurant per se, I see it almost as more of a convenience store, a place to get some snacks. Most of the one's I've been in don't even have tables, just selling pre-made food on display. I just can't get it into my head that this counts as a 'fast food joint'.

Air con is gradually creeping into the UK, but it's heat pumps, and most heat pumps are using radiators right now, but I think this is a temporary aberration. I think in the long term, the UK will have air-to-air heat pumps which do aircon.

Root beer is such a specific flavor and really nostalgic for me (especially as a float) but I can see why other places don't like it. It's a bit like cherry or bubblegum flavoring; it can have medicinal associations 😂 I've only had all dressed at an airport in Canada, but I'm with you!
