00:00 📚 Importance of Learning to Write Writing is crucial in military contexts, especially for officers. Writing awards, evaluations, and mission documents are essential tasks. Well-written documents increase the likelihood of success and recognition. Writing skills contribute to effective communication within a team. Jocko's choice of studying English was driven by its practicality in his military career. 05:50 🖋 Significance of Literacy and Communication Literacy empowers individuals to communicate effectively. Literacy is often overlooked but is foundational to strategic progress. Writing is a means of exerting influence and making persuasive arguments. Literacy is a tool for both personal and professional advancement. The historical suppression of literacy highlights its intrinsic power. 09:30 📖 The Practical Benefits of Reading Reading provides access to a wealth of lessons and experiences. Learning from books can prevent repeating mistakes made by others. Reading about real-world situations can provide practical insights. Reading intensively allows for a deeper understanding of characters and themes. Immersion in a book enables readers to empathize and gain unique perspectives. 13:16 📚 Intense Reading and Learning Intense reading involves becoming deeply absorbed in the material. Intense reading allows readers to empathize and resonate with characters, open yourself up to thoughts youve never thought before. Reading intensely is akin to acting or playing a role with full commitment. Engaging with powerful minds through reading can be disruptive but highly beneficial. Reading intensely condenses a lifetime of knowledge and experience into a digestible form.

Edwin Thumboo, a Singaporean poet, has once written a poem about the British colonization describing his own writing: They gave me subterraneous thoughts How to work effects with words; for sauce I gamed with alphabet, Marshalling sense into the line Till cunning showed beneath the verbs, cunningly. I love how the juxtaposition between military strength and power, and writing, is also present here.

I want to improve my vocabulary! Sometimes I struggle finding the proper words to explain my deep thoughts and yet I can understand many larger words. It's frustrating. I also tend to strudder a bit when my mouth can't keep up with my brain...my jaw will do this shake like those videos of cats observing birds 😆. Then I become embarrassed. Have either of you come across the preference for verbal competence over well formulated, well articulated communications? Within the corporate sphere I find this more and more common. It leads to a bias toward extroverts and sadly, in some cases, verbal aggression is rewarded over sound written argument.

It’s funny. I did English for my course and I was a horrible student. 🧑🎓 after I while I realised there was no real learning in the English department of Roehampton university. I was failing not because I didn’t like reading or writing, but it always felt like a jump I could not make with the ‘high level’ essays when all my essay feedback was not constructive. They were no pointing out how to ‘write’ when none of them know how to ‘write’ because there they are paid to tell me how shite I was at it.
