Alright, time to throw my hat in the ring on this one with my 20 commandments. Major lessons I learned being in the Army. >Drags out proverbial soap box< 1. Never, EVER call a Non-Commissioned Officer a 'Sir' unless you want to get a browbeating. Grey area is if they are about to go 'Green to Gold' and you have known them for a while (such as if (s)he was your squad leader) 2. Have respect for those who outrank you. They have the rank for a reason. You can have problems with the individual, but at the very least show them the respect that their rank is due. 3. People who volunteer their self for any detail or anything that is requested take a Russian Roulette style gamble where they can either get a shitty detail or something awesome. If it is the prior, then 'Drink Water and Drive On'. This will reflect good on you in the future because your leadership will notice eventually and know that you are someone that they can count on when it comes down to it. 4. If you are told to do something, do not ask 'Why?' If you need clarification, the better, less likely to get your ass chewed method would be to say something like 'No problem Sergeant (or Sir/Ma'am, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major), how do you want this done? (Or what do I need/where can I get what I need to get this done/who am I reporting to for this?) 5. The primary thing about Basic Training is just that. To be Basic Training! They are intending to take the raw material that they have been given (that's' YOU knucklehead!) and turn you into the beginnings of a soldier who is ready to go out there, perform your assigned job, and survive the fight to get our mission accomplished. 6. Don't feel bad if you cannot get the job you want when you first come into the Military. You can attempt again near the end of your first enlistment if you want to make the attempt (i.e. re-take the ASVAB to see if your scores improve to qualify you for that dream job of yours). 7. You WILL have long days in the military, regardless of the branch. Get that in your mind now. 8. When going for training, PACK LIGHT! You can get away with having a few books or something like that while you are preparing to head to your basic training company, but it would be best to leave the XBOX home...oh so on that note make sure that everything you absolutely need can fit into a small duffle bag (Think of your old gym bag from high school or maybe a slightly larger backpack than what you carried your school books in). Everything will be available for you to acquire at the Base Exchange / Post Exchange. 9. Don't go thinking you are invincible. I have personally seen a few promising soldiers who had that mentality fail themselves painfully by not understanding what the difference is between being highly motivated, and knowing your own limitations. Plenty of opportunities to get that 300 PT Test score, but you don't have plenty of opportunities to get a new knee/back/shoulder/hip/etc. 10. This is personal to me. The days that you spend in Basic Training that suck ass now will be days that you look back on with pride and fondness later on in your career. I still miss my basic platoon... 11. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DO NOT BLOW IT ALL AFTER YOU COMPLETE BASIC TRAINING!i f you are going to spend your hard earned money from basic, then spend it on things that you need or will need, such as a car or a computer. 12. College = Success. Get your education knocked out when you are able to do so. Do not sit on it saying "Maybe next quarter I'll start". Eventually you will be so set in your ways that it will never get done and you will be sitting there wondering what could have been. Online school works, but make sure you can find a proctored location to take your exams. 13. Drill Sergeants are not your friend. If you are having to talk with one, make sure you are with a Battle Buddy and if they take the hat off when talking with you, LISTEN WELL. He or she may be wanting to level with you on a person to person level rather than senior and subordinate. These events are rare and hard to catch, but when it does happen it is something that you will never forget. 14. (Courtesy of an old phrase by Colin Powell)Do the simple things well because someone is always watching. 15. If the Drill Sergeant ever does something wrong, do not call them out on it in front of everyone. Use tact and request to speak with them offline about it, with a Battle Buddy. 16. Your first enlistment will almost always be the worst one for you, personally and professionally. Do not let that be a deterrent from re-enlisting. 17. Semper Gumby is going to be a common process. Always be flexible as training schedules and event schedules can and will change at the last minute. Good example: I knew of a National Guard unit that was deployed to Afghanistan that got orders 4 months in to redeploy to Iraq. 18. If you stay in long enough to be a leader of soldiers (Corporal in the Army and above), get to know them tactfully. The more you know about them, the more likely it is that you can earn their respect, trust, confidence, and loyalty. 19. When you are a junior enlisted soldier, understand that praise and reward are few and far between sometimes. It is a rough job to be at the bottom of the totem pole, but all of the hard work will pay off eventually. Just do not give up on it and know that you will make it eventually through the worst of it all. 20. Lastly, no matter what, the military is all in what you make it out to be. Have fun with it, but know that you are there to do a job. Do not let what your experience at one station was make your mind up about the entire military. Also, do not let what other soldiers say about the unit reflect on what you are expecting. The most wonderful thing about it all is that each soldier, each unit will have a different experience. The sky can be the limit, but be careful not to soar too high. Off the soap box now , and if you are still coming into my military after reading this, my hat's off to you and maybe we will see each other "Down Range". Welcome to the brotherhood of the American Military, now do what you have to do and earn the privilege of wearing this uniform. Make your comrades to the left and right proud to say that they served with you!

I always tell them: "If you DO decide to go into the service, go into the Air Force or Navy. The Army and Marines will tear your body up. You might be able to handle it while you are young. When you get older, you WILL pay for it. And second, get into an MOS you can use in the civilian word. @brandonbeard84888 жыл бұрын
+High King Cade XIX when you join the service you will have to break out of your comfort zone. you will be with people from all walks of life, so I'm sure it will help you break out from being shy and help you be more outgoing. I was a gamer before I joined and a lot of the people I met loved playing video games. your size like everyone else will have its pro's and con's lol, as for the fitness it's always good to have some physical fitness before you join. your recruiter can help with that, but no matter how strong you are physically or mentally they will break you down, it's what they do, break you down and rebuild you so to speak. you might not realize or understand why they act or do what they do at first but after a while you will understand. there is no bond stronger that that of those you served with. as for the depression it could keep you from going into service. but i am no doctor and that is a decision that meps would make, but you won't know unless you try. just know that if you do join it will be extremely challenging and enduring but on graduation day you can stand tall knowing you overcome many obstacles.

0:35 Can I have a translation please? I'm assuming you are saying a type of prayer or blessing as you made the sign for "Father, son and holy ghost" Not sure if anyone said it below, but you missed keeping your hands out of your pockets unless to retrieve or put away an item and that if you have to piss you have two options: hold it until it is time to urinate or piss your pants (same rule applies to if you have to take a crap)

there's a saying, "always be in the right place and in the right uniform." that will carry you all the way through basic training. listen to what your DS/DI says, and don't whine if it's something you don't want to do. it just gets worse if you do

And the biggest thing. Learn to run, walk long distances in the sweltering heat or debilitating cold carrying 50-60 lbs of gear on your back, 20 to 35 on your chest and 15 in your hand for several miles and do push ups to where your arms might fall off. Cause God forbid if you can't run, carry, and push those following 3 months will be literal hell on earth.

Pro tip is to have copies of all the documents you gave to your recruiter. The army has a way of losing things so it is best to have a replacement on hand. Can't tell you the amount of people that had to stay at reception for something as stupid as not having their birth certificate (or something simular) in their records somehow. You do not want to stay at reception, just don't. The quicker you can pass everything the better.

Set yourself a budget!!! Your in the military and every salesperson know knows that you have steady income so they will lead you a billion dollars so you can drive that super fine ride and be sending them 90% of your paycheck for the next five years. They don't care and will send your commander a letter if you miss a payment for learn to live within your budget. (AND SAVE YOUR MONEY!)

There are lots of things you can tell someone about joining the military and each branch has some specific things. But in general I tell young folks to BE IN SHAPE.....not "sort of" not "kind of" and no.....for the purposes of the military, "round" isn't the kind of shape they want. DO NOT go in over-weight....lose the weight first, then go in. Run, swim, lift, do calisthenics but do something. If you're in shape, you have one less thing to worry about and life is much easier. As he said, know your left from your right.....don't laugh, you'll see people who don't and you'll do push-ups because of them...don't be that guy. Don't have "one last hoorah" before you go and smoke some weed or get drunk and do something stupid. Sure, you can get drunk (if you're 21 or over) just don't do something stupid. A criminal charge, like a DUI or if you pop on a piss test can get that guaranteed job taken away because NOW you don't qualify for the required security clearance. Get a guarantee in writing...if it's not in writing, it didn't happen. And YES, your recruiter will tell you what they think you want to hear to meet their quota......you are a number to them and not much else. If you want a specific job be willing to wait for it....DO NOT take something with the idea that you can switch later "because my recruiter told me...." Wrong.. They push certain jobs because those are undermanned, and they are undermanned for a reason. Oh, and never, ever forget,......you volunteered for the service, act like you want to be there or don't raise your right hand or sign the contract.

Do NOT and i repeat do NOT get a 6 year contract in the AF. Getting E3 6 months before a four year contract is not worth 2 years of your life, specially if you get a shitty base, than you'll have be stuck there for a least 5 years before you get you bop (Base of preference). Recruiters will lie
