Top vid Will, glad to hear you have gone through similar situations as me 😮 The Fv mode on my canon R5 has been awesome for getting the balance of exposure sorted. Still on the fence over the rf 100-500 or 200-800, as I'm still using my 30 year old 70-200mm. f4L . Once again cheers for the advice, always something of value 👌📷👊
@WilliamPatinoPhotography6 ай бұрын
100-500 is more versatile. Starting at 200mm is overkill IMO.

I’m pretty much a beginner and just bought an A7iv and have been shooting on manual. Mainly because I have a basic understanding of what shutter speed, ISO and aperture do, and a complete ignorance of what A, S and P mean on the dial. 😅 Learning a lot from you, though!

I bought a polariser three years ago, used it only in maybe 20 photos. I also just don’t like the look it gives. Great tips William, I am also working to that 3 lens setup. Although I am also more lenient to Astrophotography so have some primes for Astro.

Your statement about simplifying and minimizing gear is well taken. However, I do like to have a couple of NDs and a CPL along. I use the NDs less than the CPL but for the minimal room they occupy in my bag, for me it's worth having. And where I live it's pretty much all "slow water" so I need to really drag shutter speed if I want to smooth water any. I'm currently in a bit of "no man's land", so to speak, in terms of gear: When I started, everything I owned easily fit in my bag. If I did that now, I'd carry too much stuff, so it's a matter of bringing what's appropriate. Leave the rest in the trunk / boot, Just in Case, you know! LOL
@WilliamPatinoPhotography6 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. yeah it totally depends on the water you are capturing and what look you prefer. Some people love a long 2-3 minute exposure, so I can't argue that you need ND's for that haha. Typically I like speeds no longer than 2 seconds (including seascapes) so I just don't need filters if I am shooting in golden hour. No harm in having some gear there just in case though.
@lphilpot016 ай бұрын
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography I have to admit I did replace my rectangular (holder-style) NDs with round magnetic NDs. Even I don't like the hassle of attaching the holder, the adapter ring, etc., etc. 🙂

Great video William. One question- do you use “exposure bracketing” to have the image sharp? You inspired me to focus on a specific thing than just capturing a photograph and struggling with sharpening during post processing!!!
@SpaklesDr6 ай бұрын
Not William but I wonder if you are asking about "focus stacking" instead of "exposure bracketing" Focus stacking is very useful to make sure the entire scene front to back is in focus. If you have important subject close to your lens as well as in the distance focus stacking will likely be needed to keep the entire scene in focus. As far as exposure bracketing goes that is to increase the dynamic range of your photo. Many cameras have great dynamic range so that exposure bracketing is less needed sometimes than it used to be. But still useful for scenes with a very wide dynamic range.
@WilliamPatinoPhotography6 ай бұрын
Spot on, thanks.
@WilliamPatinoPhotography6 ай бұрын
As per the comment below, you might be thinking of focus bracketing. I do that sometimes, if I am ultra close to foreground. Otherwise single exposure is fine. Check my recent video on sharpening. You don't need to sharpen in post.

Thanks Will. Great insights. I’ve been using the Canon EOS RP and only 1 L lens the 24-105mm for a couple of years now. It’s all I could afford. Like you said make the most of the gear you have. A good operator doesn’t blame the tools and it’s possible to take terrible photos with an expensive camera. Better to focus on the 4 pillars and refine your skills. 😎👊👍🇦🇺

Another great video with solid tips. I've been taking pics for over 40 years but only recently started learning the art. I shoot in manual with auto ISO and use exposure compensation on a 24-200 lens. A bit lazy perhaps but it suits me.
@WilliamPatinoPhotography6 ай бұрын
Probably easier to move the iso to exactly what you want, then to use compensation + - until it gets to what you want 😅 but whatever works for you mate haha. Thanks for the support 🙏🏻👊🏻

Great video and nice advice. I think you can easily use AV mode only you must compesate on exposure dial and reading histogram. When you need specific shutter speed then switch to TV (on Canon). Think that manual mode isnt necessary cause you always set other parameters to exposure triangle. Thank you for video
@WilliamPatinoPhotography6 ай бұрын
Just doesn’t make sense to me to not set the setting to what you want and need, rather then keep bumping exposure comp up and down hoping it’ll eventually get to the right setting. Just far easier and logically to set it manually, in my mind haha.

I have about 16 years of "experience" as an amateur behind my back, but i am still uncertain about my skills... We are leaving on a major trip to both the Faroes and Iceland in 5 days with my family, i am really "nervous" about messing up my probably-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit these places and capture amazing pictures... Any particular tips for semi-advanced wonnabe photographer? :)
@WilliamPatinoPhotography6 ай бұрын
Don’t set your expectations too high. If you can get one photo day you like, then that’s pretty awesome. Remember the experience comes first, especially the family time. Don’t force it. The moments will come.

@@WilliamPatinoPhotography Definitely! I am not really overstressing it, i am not a pro and it's not my job so... Still, i hope i manage to capture some puffins, sheep or wild horses in the Faroes and the whales (if we get to see some on a boat trip we've booked) in Iceland. If we can catch some volcanoes with the drone it'd be even better. :) I am not really hoping to get "decent landscapes", since traveling with friends and family means i won't be out at 3am camping the sunrise... but you never know. I just hope i won't mess up the technical aspect of a great shot that i happen to be able to take. Aaaand then there'll be months of editing, that i hate so much :D
