This is such a great video!! “You cut to the core of me, Baxter”! Lol. It’s so true what you said about the back of the camera. We want that instant gratification of a great shot. I will definitely have to keep this in mind. When I see all the darks, it’s hard to believe there is something magic in there unless we know what to expect. Thank you!! You are so very helpful, William!!

Hi there what's your recommended aperture number for a sunset or sunrise on a beach. I only have Canon 600d and 18+55 lens

Hi there. Check out this video on aperture. Typically you’ll want a narrow Fstop like f/11 if you have subject matter close by. The video will help you :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqjUlaZ5oL9nfNk

Great tips, as usual. One thing i suspect many photographers--myself included--forget to play with is the metering mode on the camera. This could help with getting better exposures in our images. Evaluative metering, spot metering, and center weighted average metering can yield different results for the same scene. Is that a tool that you use?
@WilliamPatinoPhotography Жыл бұрын
Thank you. In theory you are right however the metering in landscapes is never accurate enough due to the dynamic light we like to shoot. That’s where the histogram saves us. Just reference that, prior and after shooting and you won’t need a light meter again. Check out my histogram video for how to use it :)

My pleasure. Budget plays a big role but a good entry level to initially dabble with photography is something like the Sony RX100 models or if you’re happy to invest more than consider going straight to something like the Sony A73 with the Tamron 17-28mm and Tamron 28-75mm lenses :)

I utilize an 18-35 mm for Nikon D800. How much wider can I really get without being a fish eye lens; 14mm? And is that 4mm difference that much more of a dramatic shot?
@WilliamPatinoPhotography2 ай бұрын
Fish eye has a completely different effect and distortion. I’m not sure what you can get for Nikon nowadays but if there’s something around 12mm, that will be quite beneficial. If you don’t have a midrange or telephoto lens, I’d consider one of them first though before getting another wide angle. Check out the latest video I made on wide angle lenses. Cheers.

@WilliamPatinoPhotography I own 24-85 and 28-200 for primarily woods and seascapes for Long Island NY. Classic small new England typography like Maine but warmer I'm thinking used Sigma prime or 10-20mm

Just found your channel, love your images and learning a lot from these videos. One question I have on the A7riii...what setting do you use on the Picture Profile? I don't fully understand if the different profiles have a effect on the histogram. I ask because I was advised to use a Neutral profile, but when looking at the back of the camera in the field I was always disappointed with what I saw. I switched to the Landscape profile which looks much better in the field, but not sure what is best to ensure I have the best data for post processing. Any advice would be appreciated. Looking forward to following your adventures in Fjord land!
@WilliamPatinoPhotography2 жыл бұрын
Gday Mike. Thanks mate! Stoked to have you over here viewing the channel. That’s a great question and I totally understand what you mean. Shooting raw means that the picture profile is basically irrelevant, it will only make the adjustment in camera for the display but back home the raw file becomes stripped again. So with that in mind, feel free to set it to Vivid or landscape, so you can get pumped when you see those results on the back of the camera, knowing it’s a closer representation of how the final image will look once processed. Cheers!

Imagine a dark, dark forest, hardly any sky visible, but with bright smallish spots of sunlight here and there on the forest floor. I’ve never been able capture that. Some have suggested hdr but it just doesn’t look natural, and there’s almost always some breeze. Any ideas about this scenario?
@WilliamPatinoPhotography3 жыл бұрын
I photograph that scenery often, although the trick is not to have too much sunlight scattered, as it can lead the eye in too many different directions. Depending on your camera, you should be able to shoot for the highlights and then brighten shadow details in post. You’ll need roughly 1/50s for a gentle breeze, so you may need to lower your Fstop to get the exposure brighter and partially raise the iso.
@kyleboogers1233 жыл бұрын
another great video mate! quick question: do you exposure blend for the sky much ? or just expose for the highlights mainly as explained in the video?
@WilliamPatinoPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Very rare for me to need to do a seperate exposure for the sky. The dynamic range of the camera is just so good these days.
@jamessouter1283 жыл бұрын
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography I had no idea how good the range had gotten. Until a few weeks ago I was using a 5d Mii and just upgraded to the R5. It's a totally different shooting process now, and shadows aren't so scary anymore. There was no way I would pull up blacks like you did in that purple sunset scene in my old gear. I'm interested in hearing how you shoot without a tripod, the R5 again has amazing in body stability, but surely if you're going to focus stack you would have issues with perspective shift as you change focus without a tripod?
@WilliamPatinoPhotography3 жыл бұрын
@@jamessouter128 I once had the 5D MKii and yeah, you never wanted to touch those shadows at all, haha. With the R5 you will be able to pull off 1/5s exposures on a wide angle, no problem at all. Potentially even slower. Focus stacking is no problem, just stay still and fire off your frames. The movement is generally no more than if you're on a tripod because even then you're going to have a slight perspective shift due to the 'focus breathing'. Every photo I've made over the past 3 years has been handheld, aside from 1-2 aurora photos. Dynamic range and ibis are the most important things for me in a camera. All the big brands now offer something solid.

If you can afford either Lightroom or Photoshop I’d have to say that. No point messing around with something inferior than having to relearn. I just use PS and primarily Adobe Camera Raw which is part of PS.

Just wondering what are you thoughts on 16-35GM or a prime 14gm for landscapes??
@WilliamPatinoPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Definitely the 16-35mm. That’s what I use and it’s definitely way more versatile than a prime. The GM is also very sharp for a zoom. I often use it at 24,35mm etc

I don't think it is wise to promote the idea of not using a tripod. Occasionally that will give you the freedom to compose better, but if you are shooting with 40+ MP and/or wish to print bigger than 24X36, I don't care how fast you are shooting or how steady your hands are, you will get blur at full res. I am a total minimalist (one body, usually 2 lenses) but I switched from carbon fiber to heavier tripods because rock steady makes a big difference for big prints. If you are content with being a social media star (which apparently most photographers are) then it probably aint necessary, but personally I could not do the big prints (which hang in my Sedona gallery) without a tripod. It also has the advantage of forcing you to think more about composition--similar to using a prime vs zoom lens.
@WilliamPatinoPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Hey Stan, around 6:00 I suggest trying a tripod, especially if you are just starting out, but I have to disagree with your suggestion that you will get blurred files without one. I regularly print larger than 36 inch wide with a 60mp camera and I don't have any trouble at all getting sharp files (and yes, these are also displayed in galleries), aerial shots too, where using a tripod is obviously not possible or going to have any effect. An image is either sharp or it isn't, there's no 'sharp enough' or subpar social media standard that I settle for. Being handheld is certainly not for everyone, especially those with DSLR bodies where it's going to be hard to get slow enough shutter speeds without shake, but it's definitely more than possible to be handheld and get a sharp image, as I've been doing it exclusively for 4 years.
@worldwithouttime3 жыл бұрын
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography i also shoot 61 mp mirrorless and yes, with the right conditions and rock steady hands (which i don't have, unfortunately) it is possible to get it sharp--i shoot more handheld than I did 10 years ago--but i think most people are gonna be better off with a tripod especially if you are aiming for 60+ inch wide prints that are going to have to be upscaled anyways, or for stitches where it is easier to get good results with a tripod and controlled movements. If you shoot f/9 or smaller at ISO 400 or lower your shutter speed will be shooting too slow to be sharp in all but the brightest conditions (unless, again, you are blessed with really steady hands!) But to each their own! Thanks for your response.

I am slugging it out an old body (16mp!) but slowly investing in lenses, a wide angle is missing from my collection and although I was aware of your point about these it has just hit home. I think this investment will bring a bit more enjoyment and satisfaction. Thanks for a little direction, cheers

Absolutely. It’s certainly not all about the gear but you still need the essentials, with a wide angle definitely being one of them in my opinion. All the best!
