The Mountain Goats Will Cure Your Bieber Fever: themountaingoatswillcureyourbi...
Michael Buckley's Dear Buck: / peron75
In which John answers gives advice to real nerdfighters on the topic of dumb boyfriends who say they don't like smart girls, leaving home to go to college, boys who maybe like you, dating your friends, how to conduct yourself during a job interview, catching Justin Bieber fever, and how the Mountain Goats can cure you.

Actually the venn diagram would be a small circle of boys who don't like smart girls within the larger circle of boys you don't want to date. Because male axe murderers who do like smart girls would hopefully also be inside that larger circle of boys you don't want to date. However, I still love that quote!

I have to say, I am a girl who has never dated a guy who didn't think she was too smart for him, but not in a I-wish-you-were-dumber way, in a wow-you're-smart-that's-cool way. I don't think I was smarter than either of them, but they both did, and I think a guy doesn't have to be book-smart to be happy with a girl who is, or vice versa, as long as they appreciate that about each other. And he better appreciate that a nerd girl is a gift, as much as nerd girl appreciates someone who stops her from crossing the street into traffic while she's explaining her strong feelings on a novel.

My boyfriend recently (like half an hour ago) told me his was intimidated by my intelligence, and I remembered that John once answered a similar question, so I dug through the archives to find this video. But I'm by sure his advice really applies. Any nerdfighters who see this, could you help a girl out and give me some advice on what to do?
@StephanG007
@StephanG007 7 жыл бұрын
I would let him know that intelligence, is a strength like every other kind of strength, physical, financial, influence, etc. And just like every other kind of strength it exists to serve others and improve their lives. And just like every other kind of strength, it can be abused. Then, you could let him know that you are fully committed to wielding your intelligence with gentleness and compassion to leave others better off than before they met you. And that if you ever did something that made explicitly made him feel "less than", that it would be an abuse of your gift on your part, and that he should let you know. Then you could ask him if he would be prepared to enjoy your intelligence with you, as something that makes life better, just as you enjoy the various strengths that he uses to make your life better. It might also be worth mentioning that although it's one of the strengths our current culture celebrates the most, it's not necessarily even the greatest strength. Most geniuses with IQ's well above 160 make no meaningful contributions to society. And many of history's heroes were people who primarily wielded other strengths: William Wilberforce used his capacity to instantly connect with people to start a hundred thousand conversations over dinner, until he swung the opinion of the entire nation so they could abolish slavery without a war. Mandela changed his though his capacity to listen compassionately and react to pain gracefully. What matters isn't the strengths we bring to the table, but the way we wield it to serve the people around us.

Hey, so, since I now know you answer totally random questions and concerns: I think I've known quite a few people in abusive relationships. Most of them were girls being abused by boys, but most of them also got out of those relationships fairly quickly (2 years max). The others are boys being abused by their girlfriends. They stay in these relationships much longer (2 years min) and seem even less willing than girls to accept advice/help. I think it's because of this strong manly man image guys think they have to live up to (and that they think you have to be week to be abused). My question is, how do you think our society (and individuals) can start supporting guys who need to leave abusive partners? Also, no one ever listens to their peers when it comes to advice on their abusive relationships. I think they might actually hear it if you say it.

About going being a freshman: Ignore the drinking part, and follow up on what John says about how you're all in the same boat. Make relationships with those you meet, and actively seek friendships. If you sit in your room moping about missing your parents, that's all you'll do- but if you go out and make an effort to meet people and new friends, you may become too busy to be sad at all. Don't forget your family, but forge your own identity outside of it while keeping them in your heart.
