A mate of mine had a van that he made brackets for the corners of the roof then he attached a sheet with strong bungees so it stopped the hot sun hitting the van roof and the side without the door,made it really quite cool on hot summers days

I have used a sheet of 9mm ply on the roof rack. It casts a shadow on your roof and keeps the heat off. Used ratchet straps to tie it down You can add a sheet of polystyrene underneath too. No extra weight. The old Landrover Safari used to have an extra aluminium skin with an air gap to shade the roof. It works. You can fit your solar panels on top and cut a hole for the vents etc.

Maybe a blackout blind ? for the projector. rolls up and down, you can get them in any colour and no light in or out. plus cheap as chips in any size you like. maybe Velcro to the roof on any side of the van you like.

Painting a large area of the top roof of the van white (where nobody can see) really helps keep it cool. I fit out shipping containers and its a seriously proven trick

In our van my wife has found out that the ecoflow air conditioner exhaust pipe needs a insulated blanket of some sort. Lots of heat transfer to the air because of the exhaust pipe. Hope this helps you keep your van even cooler 😎 Love your channel and your outlook on van life. Keep the great content coming.

Why does your van get so hot. We live in Portugal and my Vivaro doesn't get any hotter than ambient and is often cooler?

I’ve never known a van not to get hot mate. It’s a huge subject amongst van lifers because it’s an issue with every van (not sure how yours doesn’t!)

@@Adz Well you have now and like I say I live in Portugal and have just got back from a trip to Greece and Turkey. It gets up to ambient and never warmer, maybe a little solar gain from the big windscreen. The van is white and I only have 2 extra side windows, which are covered in reflective screens in the hot weather, no back windows. When I park I leave front windows open a little and use a screen cover and always look for shade. I have lived in Thailand for many years and Australia and you learn about the heat. Windows are bad and I never understand why people here buy black/dark vehicles. I guess after all these years I do things instinctively. I recently bought a rechargeable fan and used that a couple of times on the Greek trip. I keep an eye on the weather and drive accordingly. I don't have much in my van, my cold box only runs when driving, so I have no split charger/leisure battery/solar, nor the associated heat gain.

Ah yeah to be fair a friend of mine had a white van and then had it painted black and they said the difference was huge! But when I go to events in the summer, pretty much everyone avoids going in their vans in the day. If I open my rear windows and have the maxxfan on full (extraction) it can get down closer to ambient but it’s still hotter

@@Adz I can see the difference in what you do, compared with myself. Parking in the shade is a must and the reason I thankfully don't have solar. I used to do shows, rigging up an awning that goes over the vehicle roof too, creating a safari roof, then covering windows. Remember that fan motor produces heat, so natural airflow is better, the fridge quite a lot of heat for a small space. Each person produces 100 watt/h of heat, more if you are active. Windows are the worst though, especially a skyline in the roof. Cooking, we prepare all our own food, so sandwiches and salads for lunch and a cooked meal in the evening. You need to look at every load element on the system here, but I am surprised in the UK it being a problem, maybe Greta is right.....get out.
