If you are looking to get a Vanguard look toward the Harbinger or Sentinel variants. The Warden has stock weapons. The Harbinger has 3x size 5 torpedoes. The Sentinel has an EMP.

I fly the Vanguard a lot. It's one of my go to ships. Being a fighter that can carry boxes unlocks a lot of gameplay for me. I think if you can get past the dual pips it's a good ship for newer players. Fighters like the Arrow have light shields & require a good pilot to be effective, but the Vanguard is more forgiving. There's no need for crazy maneuvering. It can take a heavy beating. That big gun is gimbaled and tears through stuff. That gun has a longer range than most fighters. So you can attack them before they attack you. All the guns are on the main body so if a wing breaks off you're still good. Keyboard users can still use it effectively. And just the image of the ship makes players think twice about attacking you. In this ship, even a new player can be deadly. It's also a good ship for seasoned vets. Azure Lance has a good video about upgrading the ship to do even better in PvP. While probably not the best ship in PvP, it's versatility makes up for it. CIG are happy with it performs and have stated they don't plan to tweak it much because they feel it feels good right now. It's more vulnerable below and to the rear which more maneuverable ships can exploit. New players can think of it as more of the 'Heavy Weapons Guy' from TF2. Strike from a distance, let them come to you, while you tear through them with your superior firepower. Trying to catch up to a fighter or outmaneuver them is foolish. And multi-crew ships always allow for friends to join up. It's a good all around ship that's only missing cargo. So if you do bounty hunting, mercenary and box delivery missions it's a great choice. Vanguard was my main workhorse in this game until the released the mercury star runner. I can recommend this ship from the bottom of my heart as it really is just such a fun thing to fly while turning a profit.

Great review i love my Warden. The turret is actually just bugged. It has a glass top and should have O2 and protect the gunner from the elements. A size 4 Attrition and 4 GVSR Laser Repeaters with upgraded coolers is another great loadout

A good review but a couple things left out: The stairs leading up to the pilot's seat retract to give radar acess, and also though not currently implemented the design of the vanguard's center module is that in an emergency the entire room can be jettisoned as an escape pod. It's the very tough armour and shields coupled with the ability to access and repair components in a fight that lend to the Vanguard's extreme survivability intent. Combine this with the lage fuel tanks and storage onboard for personal weapons, suits and amenities and the Vanguard's purpose of literally being a vangaurd ship or a long range, medium to long duration detachment fighter operating solo or with other Vangaurds becomes clear. The ship does pay for this however by being relatively large and bulky for her armament/dps output, as well as slightly sluggish for her role. It's a large target and in serious combat struggles to pin down light fighters, especially when missile spam isn't allowed or the range has closed so much the target has already merged with you and isn't visible. This means that against multiple light fighters the Vanguard is likely to have trouble though it should be able to just about keep most medium fighters in it's crosshairs. This paints an interesting picture as we're likely to see Vangaurds have an Achilles heel where they may be able to weather the blows from light fighters but not stay in prolongued combat with them or risk being crippled yet at the same time a Vangaud may well be devastating to Medium fighters and even some larger ships. I find it useful to compare the Vangaurd to the F8 Lightning to get a feel for the difference in size, bulk and handling for a pure dedicated space superiority heavy fighter. The F8 being better armed while also being smaller and, during the only time it was able to be flown, more maneuverable shows us that the Vangaurd's true intended potential lies in it's range and expanded mission scope. A squadron of Vangaurds flying ahead of a force can easily scout planets with the FPS gear to back themselves up while being tanky enough to mostly get back in one piece with enough firepower to do serious damage to anything that they can get their crosshairs on. It's a ship with a clear purpose that even now seems to do it very well and as such I really do love the ship.

I'm awfully late to the party, but this video is a nice trip down memory lane. I got the Vanguard Warden when the concept was introduced and never regretted it. Now, almost seven years and many patches later, I still enjoy flying it. SInce the venerable Revenant had its ammunition decreased so much, the AD5B has taken its place. And I can't wait for cargo boxes being available in game so I can finally use the hidden compartment under the stairs.

Another fine review by one of my favourite content creators. I am having a hard time choosing the Warden over the Harbinger since they seem almost indentical but for the fact that the Harbinger packs a nasty surprise in its back pocket in the form of 3 size 5 torpedoes. The Harbinger also sells for a hefty 1 million credits less that the Warden…perhaps I am missing something?

Thanks for the reply, quick question for a guy who knows whats what: the sentinel comes standard with Stealth shields, coolers, power plant etc.. is the stealth mechanic working? Solid content thanks you! So i own a Warden and may add some of its variants to my hangar over time. Heavy and super heavy fighter options seem to be a bit light on currently. Hopefully the other manufacturers see market opportunity and get ambitious. Just a thought on review categories- I'd be very happy to see reviewers include endurance as a separate category and give a rating that considers fuel tank size, fuel economy, ability to refine/ scoop fuel, enough cargo space for bulk supplies (food, water and spare parts), crew amenities and survival options, ability to transport ground vehicles etc. For example a short range fighter like a Gladius might get one star for endurance, while the Carrack might get the maximum five out of five stars. I see this as being an increasingly important purchasing consideration as more and more ships enter the verse and new star systems roll out with the inevitable fuel economy/ jump range tweaks that follow. Another reason I think endurance needs its own slot is the fact that CIG seem to design ships around 'in game balance' instead of designing ships fit for purpose first and then balancing them. We have 'long range patrol' vessels, 'deep space exploration' ships and 'combat' that lack many of the design features, crew amenities and role equipment required to carry out their stated function. This can make it difficult to glean the truth (seat of the pants feel) about a ships capabilities and what it would like to fly one/ plan a long play session around it. Cheers o/

Right now I'll probably not include it - I make a conscious effort to keep my reviews as grounded as possible in how the ships perform in-game, trying to avoid commentary on what might be there in the future, or speculation. There's enough of that already for Star Citizen! But in the future as more is added, I can see the merits of adding that!

Good video. I wish you'd highlighted the little voids CIG left in or next to the doors and component hatches where future specific door-lock UI will go in the future, so you won't have the trouble of interacting with the wrong door sometimes. You could also have recommended some S4/S5 gun options to match the S2 velocity PIPs, although those stats might change someday.

It should be noted, the vanguard's pitch/yaw was reduced by 22 degrees, from what I can tell, the old speed was 54, it's now 32. While Roll on the vanguard was upped by 10 degrees to 120.

Seeing I just found your channel, I'm late to the game. What is good about 3.10.x (and hopefully future) is that fixed weapons now have a place. Switching to a Size 5 laser fixed with the other size 2 as lasers might be a pretty nasty combo for ships. I'm even toying with the idea of using two distortions in the mix to help drop shields. I think I'll buy this in-game as my daily for bounty hunting PvP.

Nice review. I have one with an all laser repeater loadout and Mil grade A components. I can slive through Claim jumper missions with that. The Vanguard is my mission runner ship and I can't see me getting rid of it (although I might be tempted to upgrade to a Sentinel or Harbinger when the option arrives)

Necro time! One thing worth considering, that i haven't seen mentioned in any review, are the server blades of the Vanguard series. With the Harbinger and Sentinel the racks for the blade, in the habitation section, are occupied. Presumably with the necessary equipment to ruin their torpedo/e-war functions. However in the Warden the blade rack is empty, allowing for much greater customization once those modules are, eventually, released.

I've pledged for most of the light and medium fighters, as that's the role I prefer. However I recently added a Vanguard Warden to my collection. I see it playing an important role not only for x vs x engagements, but also as an escort ship. Long range, paired with fast travel is something that I think will be necessary for escorting traders, and most of the light and medium fighters simply don't offer that. The Defender is an exception, but if your going to have multiple escorts, I can't imagine ships that will be better than the heavy fighters like Hurricane, Scorpius, or Vanguard, once master modes is in the PU.

Before the update to box delivery missions, the Vanguard was my primary ship. Beds so I could log out in space, laser weapons so I wouldn't need to re-arm unless I fuck up in combat, good fuel capacity and so on and so forth, and it became a really good combination of a package carrier/bounty hunter ship. Swapped out the gimbal for an additional straight S5, and it can take care of most light fighters in a breeze at least enough to work for PvE bounties. Trying to steer clear of PvP for now, since I imagine I'll suck... But yeah, I find it to be a wonderful ship even with the stock loadout. It's not the best fighter, but it's bulky enough to go toe to toe with just about anything with a Medium shield or less. But since box deliveries became shit, I just went back to the 600i and the Defender for my bounty hunting.

Piloting the ship just gives me a really cool Star Trek Enterprise feel that only the connie has gotten close to. Hi, first time I see one of your videos. NIce work. I am new to SC and I am looking for a ship with good autonomy, good looking, not too big, with good cockpit visibility, with multicrew and amenities, etc... for starting the exploration path. Basically I am trying to explore other horizons in game after playing combat, cargohauling and minning. Do you think the Warden would be appropiate for exploration? With my short experience I think this ship hits all the boxes but as I said I am new and unexperienced. For example I don't know if... for exploring I need cargo capacity. Best regards.

@@Farrister they have been talking a lot about it on the official star citizen channel. Basically they are going to utilize "convergence" flexibility to help fixed weapons track a little better, there will also be ship trails and a pip arrow to help you anticipate the vector of your target.

Is the BUK system still a thing they are developing? Already this ship is great. still hate that you have to awkwardly click the air to open doors and turret (the buttons are there, just USE them already!) but it really flies like a dream. The size 2 cannons in front perfom like size 3s, they're very good. And one more thing that will make any Warden fan happy: mount one of the turret guns from the Redeemer on the wardens nose... So long as stealth isn't working right at the moment, this is my bounty hunting ship.

I love all of its features, and a long-range fighter would be my go-to choice for this game. But I can't stand the design. Especially the top turret which looks like it was just randomly attached to the shape of the hull (more like a Drake job--but out of place here), and the tail wings. The main gun underneath is silly in size, shape and positioning--reminds me of that Decepticon that transforms into a gun lol.

its a great ship but the fixed weapons need work and more heavy guns on it. ie 3 size 4 guns would make it a super heavy fighter.

Probably about the single big weapons hardpoint, back when that was a bigger advantage than it is now. They have gone down a similar route with their Ares concept

@Jason Davey Before Cig dorked fix load outs,the size 5 Laser autocannon was a beast. Hell, it was the greatest sniping ship to own, it was not unusual to take out real and npc ships as far out as 3000 meters. Hopefully 3.10 brings back the accuracy of fixed weapons.

@@Farrister after about 20 more minutes found the pixel to click - gotta click outside of the green highlighted area which is very counter-intuative but hey now I know. Did a few HRTs and gotta say - great ship but pricey like you say

They are close to being great but currently they are not, the silly looking chin gun gets shot off all the time, they need to place that imbedded in the nose, the x4 s2's that would then be removed should become x2 s3's imbedded into the wings. If reviewing then use it alot, whats the point that when you enter combat you lose most of your firepower?

What a stupid design...A small elevator / lowering hatch would take up less space than that crazy ramp. Opening up more internal space, allowing the Bulkhead to move backward or forward, i reckon you could get 4 SCU in there.
