What I like about the Toaru series is that the espers don't just use their powers freely. They do mental calculations in order to output their power efficiently. Like how Accelerator needed to concentrate when he saved Last Order. When Kuroko needs to calculate the coordinates on where she teleports. Unlike X-Mens mutants where they just use their power like it was already automatically programmed to do a certain thing.

The X-Men thing is just factually untrue. The whole school thing and the entire reason for the conflict is because mutant powers are dangerous and unpredictable. Rouge kills everyone she's in contact with so she has to cover up at all times. Magneto only is such a master with his abilities because of his age. If Jean isnt careful, she could fry the brains of those she loves. Cyclops can never open his eyes without special eye coverings or he'll kill everyone, even though hes already trained. There ARE mutant powers that are instantly mastered like Storm's weatherkinesis, but the vast majority arent. Hell theres a mutant whos power is to just explode once and die.

The only reason I like espers is because of the science behind abilities and not because of something just sounding cool . Anyways , magic can be anything and everything Kamachi wants , like seriously the dude just took some people fantasizing that Arthur has a twin sister and made a shield that shoots millions of lasers out of it somehow . Sometimes turning your brain off while seeing magic is the correct course of action because we just take a story , take a part of it , spin it a thousand times to get the next big villain . That's why I consider the magic side in Toaru inferior to something like the fate counterpart of it in servants . Because in Fate , while yes we do spin some stories and genderbend some characters , but we get this pure unadularated hype when utilizing things from certain mythologies , re-enact battles and use the equivalent of iddle theory to beat otherwise unbeatable enemies , case in point , the fight against Beast III and the Atlantic Lostbelt are some of the most glorious things I've seen to this day . I know that I blabbled a lot about Fate , but to make it short , what I like is something like the Amakusas vs Aqua where we used the symbols of Jesus' crucifixion to beat the dude . Not the usual villain who is stupidly overpowered and can just destroy a continent with ease but a single punch is enough to floor them

Kakine’s a different beast. DM creates new energies and new forces out of nothing. It fundamentally changes the laws of the universe from the moment of activation. For this reason it should always be one step ahead of Vector Transformation, which can control any force that has already been established, but cannot affect unregistered or yet-nonexistent forces. However, in saying this, we have to recognize the fact that the person named Kakine Teitoku and the Dark Matter ability play against each other. Dark Matter is an extraordinarily strong and versatile ability that not only matches Vector Transformation but is in many ways superior. Kakine Teitoku on the other hand is definitely a worse esper than Accel. I’m not talking of mere brain capacity or moral issues here - though that too is a thing - but on a fundamental level Kakine shockingly misuses his ability throughout the series, for a variety of reasons. Pre OT15 Kakine is a lot like Pre OT3 Accel : as he’s never had to face a real threat, he could get out of trouble with a superficial use of Dark Matter. This started to change during his fight with Accelerator, just as Accelerator only learned about fighting while getting pummeled by Touma. Indeed, the revenge-bound NT6 Kakine seemed to have learned a lot of new powers, and he was gradually overpowering Accel with it. But then, his progress was sent tumbling down by the conclusion of that fight. Beetle05 who was born out of DM took over the Kakine Network and established himself as the new Kakine Teitoku. Because that takeover was achieved through the careless use of DM by the original Kakine, this new post-NT6 Kakine is exceedingly cautious when using his ability. In effect, he has a self imposed ban on using his best powers and developing new ones, out of concern that the further development of DM will bring back the old personality. We now see that, for a different reason than before, Kakine actively gets in the way of DM. If the ability developed by itself with the sole view of self strengthening then it would soon be able to, among other things, replicate other esper powers (as indicated in NT6). And this is perhaps the most important element to take into account for DM’s prospects : it is an esper ability that does not need an esper, and in fact, is perfectly capable of creating one. It is possible that it needs no soul either. Extending even further the use of its psychometry on the faint traces of Sisters corpses left, DM might even break the code to their brains, access the network, and draw out the knowledge of 10.000 deaths. Who knows what it could achieve by that point ? You wouldn’t expect inorganic matter to refine lifeforce and use magic, but for the record, there is something ‘flowing’ through Dark Matter that Accelerator had to reverse in order to destroy it. There’s no rule stopping this ability from finding the trees. Being able, even in a very roundabout and long fashion, to touch the territory of god, now that sounds familiar. If Aleister did his homework as expected, then indeed this looks to be a promising second plan in case the straightforward One-Way-Road didn’t work.

This brings to light my favorite aspect of the To aru franchise, how the Esper fights are written, to win a fight it's not usually dependent on the strength of one's power, if not the knowledge they have on it and how they use it and knowledge in general. My favorite example is the way Kuroko uses her ability, teleportation may sound simple on paper, but once you understand the concept of it, the only limits are what your mind and come up with, if it exists in her mind, there's nothing stopping her from teleporting behind someone and teleporting that person in to a wall instantly killing them, even if you can create lasers or punch away buildings

I’m a huge fan of Misaka & Misaki, I like the fact they’re both middle schoolers at the same age who were able to achieve that level, their shared rivalry makes the dynamics amazing between those two. I also think that Mental out definitely have more to it than we were shown and it’s being slowly revealed. Also can’t forget our anazing Railgun which I’m so mad that her level 6 shift was just forgotten about in the story. I will look it up but I’m also curious about thier ranking, how will they help achieve Aliester’s goal in that order.

Considering the fact they became lvl 5 due to dumb luck IDK what to say 😅. Like they were just lucky parameter list chose them. I don't think any lvl 5 actually worked hard. Also the lvl 6 shift isn't exactly mentioned after becouse character's that can destroy a city is Tuesday for characters like Touma and Accelerator so they don't mean much. As for Aleister the only 2 who matter are Touma and Accelerator. Misaka lost her purpose after she gave her DNA. The rest are just to keep the scientist occupied so that Aleister can keep Touma in the shadows I guess. They have no purpose.

Best power system ever, to be powerful you have to be super smart, Accelerator doesn't just reflection your attacks back at you, he reversis the direction of gravity so he can fly, he redirects wind currents to a singular point to create plasma, Railgun doesn't just shoot lighting, she manipulates EM currents to stick to walls or ride falling metalic structures, she can create a EM field to manipulate iron dust and vibrate it to be akin to a chainsaw. Esper fights aren't decided by who has the most broken power, its about being cunning and creative, about who knows what and how, you dont overpowered your opponent, you outsmart them

I have have a theory that Aihana’s power is the Level 5 version of precognition and that Tree diagram is based on it. Imagine an esper that not only has the power to view alternate potential futures but also the ability to insert the perceptions and stimulations of that future into the minds of others. They would be able to make people their “ideal” selves by stimulating them in such a way that they act out a specific beneficial timeline and also be able mess with perception but not having any real offensive capability. This would make them a massive threat to the dark side as through the butterfly effect, they can derail any plan or experiment. This is also supported by the structure of the Level 5 list. Discounting #7 as a gemstone, #2 is a backup for #1, #4 for #3. Implying that the #6th ability is similar in function to Mental out.

I think the reason sogiita gunha hasn't been shown very often is because I think kamachi is hiding a big plot twist involving how gemstones work and their relation to magic. I don't have much evidence, but I have a gut feeling.

Gotta love how very X-MEN the details in their powers are. I wonder if he is a comic book fan. I think it's important to add layers to powers and allow them to be open enough to expand into the absurdity to make things exciting. I mean they're not The Flash or Superman levels of godlike feats but they're deep enough to rival the same measure of details on how their powers work. It's really amazing.

I have been thinking about this for a while but some of the levels 5's would be great in the medical and medicine field... Misaki: Can use Mental Out to block out any pain or discomfort the person may feel which we saw in NT11. Misaka: Due to being an electro master she could use her powers to send electrical cardioversion to get the heart rhythm back to normal. Accelerator: As we saw he can reverse the blood flow in the body which could be really helpful in stopping the person from bleeding to death or blood clots. I believe we saw this in OT19 with his fight with Aiwass. Aihana Etsu: I guess due to their power can make a person be their ideal self, it would help with depression and low self-confidence. I'm not sure what Gunha, Kakine and Mugino could offer but I'm sure there be something for them!

It's quite possible Misaka could develop telepathy like abilities if it ever occurred to her. I remember she read Stripperella's mind back during the level upper arc. Our bodies utilize electricity for many of our basic biological processes. Matter transformation is also a possibility. If Misaka starts adjusting the proton/neutron ratio of any substance she could probably turn lead into gold.

Misaka Mikoto in theory has no limit on her power. the coins she uses max range is 25 meters, but if she lowers the power she puts into them the longer the range. the same goes for something with more mass. really her limit is the amount of energy the object can take and how much she wants to put into the object. the trick will be finding something that can take all the energy she can bring to bear. but then again bringing her things that she can pour all she can into, may end up training her and we never find the limit.

Kamachi says in the OT22 afterword that what Accelerator wants more than anything is a family. He wanted to be 'left alone' in the sense that he wouldn't harm others, but even in the Railgun S flashbacks you see kid Accelerator smiling as he's being accepted by the other boys. Accel wants to live a normal life where he can live peacefully and be accepted into society.

I dont really recall a reason other than just advancing scientific studies and seeing where humanity can go, Aleister's objective is to destroy magic which is why he created AC but also most of the developments within the city are left for the multiple scientists and organizations. Gensei wanted it because he saw it as science's greatest achievement if he managed to create a god from it. The Scientists involved in the Level 6 shift for Accelerator were taking direct orders from Aleister at the very top, but aleister had no intention of creating a Level 6, the whole project was designed to fail so Aleister could send the clones to Academy City institutions across the world. The average scientists who took part either were just following orders or wanted to advance science similar to Gensei.

I really want an arc with Accelerator and Misaka work together and I want to see how Misaka views Accelerator. Especially after Accelerator telling Academy City about his crimes and existence of the sisters. The Hawaii Arc didn’t dive into much with exchange. Their crossover was literally brief. I’ve always wondered how smart the Level 5’s are. Obviously Misaka, Misaki and Accelerator are geniuses. However the rest don’t show much intelligence. People constantly say their smart as supercomputers. However Sogiita shows zero feats to prove it.

While you're right in pointing out that Accelerator, Misaki and Mikoto have the best explicit intelligence feats on page/panel, no doubt in part because they're the level 5 with the most focus and the most popular ones (which feed into each other), all the level 5 sans Gunha are geniuses by any measurable standard. Keep in mind that just by virtue of using their powers effectively and with the finesse necessary down to the scale of a molecule and subatomic in some cases, they need the processing power of supercomputers even though Kamachi has hinted at them not always performing all those calculations at a conscious level. There's some notable feats from Kakine in particular though, as he was noted to have modified and programmed his iconic Tweezer gauntlet by himself, not to mention that during his battle with Accelerator he was said to consciously switch between the effects he wanted to use with his DM ability in order to keep bypassing Accel's vector reflection, which is quite a feat. Mugino is also assumingly quite smart, but the problem with her is that her psychotic personality and pride very often overwhelm any rationality she possesses. Can't say anything about Aihana considering we know next to nothing about him or her, and Gunha is self explanatory.

However he’s not intellectually in terms of strategy or leadership. Same goes for Mugino. While she might be a academic genius, however she sucks with strategy and leadership. Sure she leads ITEM, however she doesn’t much think of her plans and just goes in for the kill due to her unstable psychopathic nature. I mean that’s how she lost to SCHOOL and especially to Hamazura. She didn’t think of a plan on catching and then killing him, she just went in with no plan and that’s what got her eye and arm destroyed. Aihana might be smart to keeping there identity a secret. However did they seriously not think of a plan or anything to stop Touma during GT2? I mean did Aihana even know about Touma’s IB.

Well... we have that mahou Shoujo Nanoha who has a similar expansion story. It is originally a spin-off of an anime called triangle heart, it has about 3 seasons, it has prequels in the form of a game, drama cd, manga and novel that take place between these seasons, spin-off with the protagonist's daughter, spin-off of the spin-off with another character etc. and like Toaru, the story takes place in the same universe, therefore, several characters that appeared in the original series appear in the praquels and spin-offs as secondary characters. Level 5 already became obsolete by the time of NT & GT. Except accelerator. If Level 5 can easily break someone arm, some enemies(girls) touma encounter could easily destroy the world or realities. Wait, even in OT, Level 5 already 'common' character since touma enemies or allies (in OT) at least strong/unique as Level 5. This is one biggest problem of Level 5. They think they are strongest person in the world. In reality, they are just exotic animal in cage called academy city, in mystical world when monsters from fairy tale actually exist.
