Aero Fighters Assault, known in Japan as Sonic Wings Assault is an arcade style combat flight simulator developed by Paradigm Entertainment and published by Video System for the Nintendo 64 in 1997. It was first released in North America on October 30, 1997, then in Japan on March 19, 1998, and finally in Europe on April 12, 1998. It is the first and only game in the Aero Fighters series (known in Japan as the Sonic Wings series) with 3D computer graphics, as well as the sixth and final title of the series before Video System filed for bankruptcy sometime in 2001. It pits a group of four pilots going after a fictional world-dominating organisation Phutta Morgana.

This was the game that made me fall in love with modern aviation. In particular the F-14, which, between this and Ace Combat 5, is my all time favorite aircraft.

If Aero Fighters Assault had a consistent and decent frame rate, it would be one of the more liked games on the system. Just compare the training mode to the single player campaign and the difference is night and day. Star Wars Rogue Squadron showed us that it was possible to have an enjoyable flight combat game on the N64.

I think the hate boils down to the "easy" flight mode. When you can't roll the plane, and are forced to "steer" it like a car, the entire experience is ruined.

I have a lot of nostalgia for this game. It was an arcade game with flight sim like qualities. As a kid I really loved the attention to detail they gave to the controls. You could turn, dive, strafe and throw flares against guided missiles. It felt very realistic. And the bosses were very creative visually with attention to detail. Even the standard enemy fighters had detail. Not only that the game taught me as a kid the difference between an Apache and a Hind.

In retrospect, what a game like this needs is the abiity to swap between teammates mid-mission, depending on the situation. For example, use an F16 to intercept incoming enemies, an A10 to straffe the ground targets, and then the F14 to take out persuers after completing the objective.

I liked to play the game a lot when it came out. Still listen to the soundtrack from time to time. I admit that the game play is unbalanced, but the only real bummer of the game is Air Battle, since there's not enough time to destroy all enemy aircraft, just the jets and the boss.

This is a game that's really hard to return to. It has a novelty of being a fighter aircraft game on nintendo 64, since flight gams are rare on post-snes era consoles, but it has a lot of things that hold it back, such as really weird flight model and wonky controls. This genre is where Playstation had an absolute advantage, especially with Ace Combat series.

Having learned that it's part of the fun and wacky Sonic Wings series of vertically scrolling shoot 'em ups, I picked the cart up for a couple of euros not too long ago, also keeping in mind the impressive pedigree behind the game. I was expecting a jewel in the rough of sorts, but it ended up being more rough than jewel. The washed out looking visuals, the spotty frame rate and just the overal dearth of excitement in the missions are the worst culprit here.

yea, back when I was 12, fighting that big skybomber was troublesome. I was either dead or out of time after being so close. but the fun part was finding weakpoints in these bosses. I've learned that attacking a destroyed part of any boss will do more damage to it. as for the fortress... I still don't know till this day. I just camp behind mountains and poke at it. still have the game... but no 64 system.

I have a soft spot for this but I've been a long time fan of the Aero Fighters franchise. I spent so much money playing the first game in my favorite pizza place's arcade when I was a kid even playing the arcade versions sometimes when visiting there with friends or family after getting the SNES port. Plus my one friend who owned a Neogeo had the second and third games so I played them at his house a lot. I had one set of cousins who owned this and I spent a lot of time playing it during family gettogethers there. They had Star Fox 64 but I knew several people who owned that so this was my priority when at their house.

Yeah, while I know some other people quite liked this one, it's easy to understand how it turned out when considering that this was the first game Paradigm Entertainment developed on their own, as it seemed that Pilotwings 64 turned out as good as it was because Nintendo EAD helped them out. Whatever the case, I'd say that they definitely got better as they had gotten used to developing more games as time went on, with games like Beetle Adventure Racing and such.

I never even played the objectives as a little kid. I was just fascinated with destroying the buildings lol. The N64 did limit this thing though. Though a bit more powerful than the PS One, it's textures were almost always worse because of the limited storage space on the cartridge compared to a CD-ROM. Of course, better textures probably would have just worsened the frame rate issues.

Ace Combat from PS has more missions and aircraft. But it loses to Aerofighters when it comes to history, creativity, aircraft graphics and artificial intelligence. Aerofighters Assault is really quite superior and the aircraft are much better simulated. Although no game considers stoll or G-force, aircraft in Aerofighters Assault have a nearer sensitivity and speed than Ace Combat. Therefore, Aerofight is superior So only Ace Combat from PS2 have achieved a bit of superiority. Even Dreamcast's Air Force Delta turns out to be superior to PS1's Acecombat.

Most likely, they slowed the planes down because if they actually flew at even close to real speeds, you'd overshoot your target in seconds. You would end up making multiple passes over each target just trying to line up a single shot. not to mention hitting the edge of the map in seconds. At least this game has solid obstacles that you can crash into. I've played a couple similar games on other systems where you just bounce off structures and scenery.

i actually own the cartridge of this game, somewhere in the deepest fathoms of one of my closets, collecting dust... i bought the game way back then for the simply reason that I could fly an F-14 and shoot down other aircraft while flying in a 3D space and back then, that was something new. needless to say, it aged super poorly. especially after i transitioned from N64 to PC in 2000 which had games of that kind of genre that were way superior. the final nail in the coffin was when I got my hands onto my very first Ace Combat game, Ace Combat Zero The Belkan War, for PS2 in 2006. well, i am still primarily a PC player and I keep re-playing Ace Combat 7 every once in a while since its an awesome game. Aerofighters Assault though? haven't played that game for well over 24 years now

Dang, this is pretty disappointing. The original Aero Fighters was my absolute favorite arcade game as a kid. Apparently the snes port is one of the rarest games on the system now or something?, but I've never played it and don't know how it stacks up. Got kinda excited when I saw this, thinking, "oh dope, they made a sequel on n64??" But this looks like it plays like a completely different kind of game and is a sequel in name only :/

The game looks interesting and needs a cockpit mode badly. However, none of the planes on display are or were futuristic. They're either standard fighter jets used in militaries across the world or they have long since decommissioned.

My complaints weren't with the graphics, but with the limited gameplay. The most underrated game I've ever played was Ultimate Air Combat. And in this game you had 2 part missions. First an Air to Air combat with other pilots, & then the 2nd part was the main objective. It felt VERY addictive for such an old game. You had the choice of 3 planes, & could kit it out how you see fit depending on the mission briefing. And as the game progresses, the engineers would add a NEW upgrade to each of your planes. Upgrades such as a laser, backfiring machine guns, The Thunderbolt, extra carrying capacity, better chaff, & so forth. This game had NONE of that, & was outshone by the NES game!!

***** The Nintendo Entertainment System. It was one of its' last releases, but was overlooked because for some strange reason Flight Simulators are often avoided. I know it's difficult going back that far, but I recommend even just 1 hours play. I play it via The Wii; Homebrew channel. Or I just get my NES out! Thanks for supporting flight simulators. One day.. we shall have another classic. One day...

id naturally disagree as there are many of the hundreds of games I've reviewed already which i have loved. Its impossible to review a game through the my eyes aged 15/16 when i am now nearly 32 so i combine my experiences of the time with my views on the game now. After all, it would be foolish to recommend games i liked as a kid which when playing now are no way near as good as i remembered.

I strongly disagree. From your video, it looks like you've never used the tracer camera. But this was one of the coolest features in the game, allowing for a much higher sense of 3d space, speed etc. If I remember correctly, this is the camera one can activate by locking onto a target and the pressing the down button on the d-pad. You just didn't play it right. ;-) (but seriously, you didn't) edit: Maybe I remember this incorrectly. But wasn't there also a chaser cam? By which I mean a cam that shows your plane in the distance while have the locked target in the foreground? Actually, that could well be another game.

I love this game. This is one of your e videos I disagree with most. Still much love though. I will say that once You switch the controls to the more simulation style mode, the sense of control is much better, and you can get into some pretty intense dogfights.
