Much love for Jonathan Clements. His columns in NEO magazine are still my favorite part of the publication; the dude's anime brain is insanely huge. I also like that he doesn't disguise anime as anything it's not, like some fans try to do. If you watch his comments on Legend of the Overfiend in Channel 4's 'Top 100 Cartoons' he isn't apologetic about the smuttiness of the film, but instead he points out the hilarity and fun you can take out of it.

Does anyone who which company and anime he was talking about near the end?
@Bumphuk11 жыл бұрын
I wonder if he was talking about 'The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya'. That show is pretty moe and for a brief period it was one of the most talked about shows.
@sachariel695110 жыл бұрын
If that was moe, then nobody would have given a shit.......
@sachariel695110 жыл бұрын
I like it though, but it ain't moe. Maybe one character, but not the entire show.

Sacha Riel it has a great deal of moe in it, though mostly it's their to be deconstructed.

This was not a factual learning experience talk, this was anime fans being told they should not feel ashamed to watch porn, everyone else is just a hater, and he threw in history to make them feel as though they learned something.
@minyaw123410 жыл бұрын
He is talking about preaching to the converted - when they are actually the more like the mainstream. Saying all anime is gore or all anime is for kids or all anime is porn is the same as saying all anime is moe. At least he realized that the audience he is talking to is maybe spending as much on anime as only one of that japanese fan who is a 30 year old businessman if not less. People act entitled to something that they usually aren't paying for thinking moe is ruining anime when it's actually that genre that keeps it still alive because nobody else bothers to spend a significant amount of money on anime (yes, your crunchyroll subscription is not nearly enough to feed people's families).
@relyat898 жыл бұрын
But 700,000 Crunchyroll subscriptions IS enough. Like he said, internet streaming is about micro payments. A few cents from each free ad-supported view and even more from each paying subscriber adds up a lot. And then add in Amazon and Netflix spending millions on single series' and you have the future. Hardcore collecting is fine, in fact, I am probably one of the bigger spenders out there, but the industry and the audience is moving away from that. And I think that's a great thing for the financial health of the industry and the variation of content that we get.

Drinking game: take a shot every time he mispronounces a word. It would be nice if there were sources in the description to bolsters his statements. O-Ren Ishii was done with rotoscoping, not motion capture. How much did that sequence cost anyway? Japanese animation is generally quite cheap and rotoscoping is a cost-cutting measure. So what did he actually say? I know it's not "Schoolgirl Milky Crisis." I was hoping he would talk about how outside of Tokyo, Japanese anime is actually largely seen as kids fare.
@Giorno.7 жыл бұрын
He talks about misconceptions and then he comes up with saying that only single men in their 30s like stuff like Love Live. Even though those "Moe" shows are huge among teenagers and young adults. So he begins spreading a new misconceptions. Westerners are just completely clueless regarding Japanese culture in general.

@ArilandoArilando9 жыл бұрын
This guy get's some things wrong which really hurts his credibality. Like claiming that golgo 13 isn't really liked in Japan. It's actually one of best selling and longest running manga ever. Even if he's referring to the OVA, it's extremely unlikely that it was primarily intended for foreign audiences, rather than domestic harcore fans. His last part about moe/hentai (itself a stupid term that shows he doesn't really know what he is talking about) and niche late night anime is cringe-worthy to anyone who knows the slightest bit about this market.
@gibgezr10 жыл бұрын
Does anyone else think that maybe he is missing the point when he tries to use clips from satirical shows like The Simpsons and South Park to showcase what western media thinks about anime?
@ItsVerreth10 жыл бұрын
That is the point? The satire reflects what people actually thought at the time, hence why he showed them.

20:13 he says you sell teenagers porn. He left out that most anime brings in sexual themes, doesn't help the "Anime is all sex" idea. One piece, having bisexual, hideous, anime ruining freak. Bleach, having many random scenes. Naruto having characters based on sex. Its hard to find an anime without sexual themes. This was good for the history lesson, and completely trash for all the snoby unfactual humor. He talked about hentai and such for 20 mins of this "talk"
