Interesting, but this is exactly how I thought it would sound (and what ford now seems to be addressing on the new raptor). The Unequal length headers give V6's the classic "work truck" uneven sound, the sound that is pretty much universally disliked, unlike the "smooth" even sound that you'd expect to hear from a high performance V6, for example a 370z. I personally think either header setup sounds pretty sweet. Never understood all the flack about the sound, it doesn't have the mean "American Muscle" V8 sound, but you do get cool turbo noises too so in my mind that makes up for it. I guess that's the ricer boy in me that doesn't care how it sounds as long as it's turbo'd, lol. Always wondered why ford went with unequal length headers on the ecoboost trucks, EL headers seem like such an obvious move. Most people unanimously agree that EL headers sound better on 6 cylinders. Subaru's, not so much lol.

Great video! Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I have the same system except I have the SPD catted downpipe. No check engine light with SPD catted downpipes, and more RTQ with cats vs straight piped. The cats also help take out the rasp, however the X-pipe is what really causes the worst rasp, especially going catless. What tune you running? I currently have the AFE Scorcher Blue and love it.
@geezernyounggun5136
@geezernyounggun5136 5 жыл бұрын
I use the aFe Scorcher Pro. Only go this route if you're willing to risk sacrificing your warranty or if you have an amazing dealer that doesn't immediately penalize you. They send custom tunes based on all the parts you have in the truck. Although once I get a turbo compressor wheel upgrade I'll likely be taking it to a local shop. And yeah I actually am going to go catted equal length in the future. Catless has more HP, catted has more TQ from the engineers I spoke to. I use aFe because they're the only ones with an equal length design which further helps performance. With the catted downpipes, do you get backfiring? That's the one thing I found lacking with the setup in the video. I mean the raptors hate to backfire, very rare, which is generally a good sign about a tune; but just curious if you get more pops~
@car-collector
@car-collector 5 жыл бұрын
@@geezernyounggun5136 When you say pops, do you mean detonation? I had my truck go into limp mode one when I was street racing, other than that no issues. I'm really looking forward to what COBB Racing is about to release!

Michael - can you describe the circumstances that put your truck into reduced power mode? Tune you were running, fuel octane level, engine temp, transmission temp, ambient air temp. I ask this, because mine did it several times, traced it back to the transmission needing an update flash. Never had an issue since.
@car-collector
@car-collector 5 жыл бұрын
@@geezernyounggun5136 I have the AFE Scorcher Blue, the one time it went into limp mode I had been driving normal, booted it off a light, and lost power at high rpm in 3rd gear. The code was a misfire issue, and never happened again since.
@geezernyounggun5136
@geezernyounggun5136 5 жыл бұрын
Michael - that was the same scenario mine decided to not shift out of 5th, then once on 7th, then on 3rd. My codes were misfires as well. As soon as I shut the truck off and restarted all was well. The frequency started getting closer together and more often I thought it might be the tune, so I set it back to stock. I was in town when I took off from a light it was still in third, gear and didn’t shift and went into limp when I pressed the accelerator to get up a hill. I took it straight to the dealer, the code was misfire, limp mode kicked in because the engine was under load in the wrong gear going up the hill. All that was needed was a transmission update. So just a nugget here, if it starts happening more frequently, you may need to have the transmission control module flash updated.

Hi, thanks for the vid, great quality, I have a 2017 platinum f150 eco boost, wanted to do some exhaust work for some hp/tq gains, that being spd adapters, spd 3” catted down pipe... my goal is to as much as possible maintain the trucks current quite bark, but confused to whether even do the down pipes if I’m not increasing bore size on resonator section and muffler back to tailpipe, I know spd has a 3” performance resonator kit, but then the next bottle neck is the muffler, anyways correct me if I’m wrong but basically wondering if doing the adapters and downpipes but leaving the rest back of that stock hinders any gains.... and if it would then what would be your recommended set up from resonator to tailpipe to keep her quite...regards
@geezernyounggun5136
@geezernyounggun5136 5 жыл бұрын
Kyle - Don’t worry about the bore size. If you go with equal length catted downpipes you will gain bottom end torque but lose a bit of top end speed. The opposite is true for catless downpipes. The cats will reduce the bark and will be fine with the resonator, and still sound good. If you do the equal length performance catted DPs, don’t waste your money on SPD. That is really a cheap means of getting minor gains for a stock system. aFe has the equal length catted down pipes.

Quick question I dont know if you can help out in this or anyone reading this. I installed the 3" SPD resonator delete and the Corsa db exhaust recently. I want to install the 3" SPD downpipes with the turbo adapters too but someone told me that the turbos would get "lazy" in low rpms because the 3" pipes were suppose to work the turbos at higher rpms. Something to do with proper back pressure. Is this true or can someone enlighten me on this lol my bad I'm not a gearhead.
@geezernyounggun5136
@geezernyounggun5136 5 жыл бұрын
Jorge - It isn’t that they get lazy, but they don’t operate efficiently. If you go with performance DPs, you are really tossing about $150 away for minimal gains by adding the spacers. The only issue with back pressure, is running an “open” exhaust or very low restricted mufflers, then back pressure is reduced and it will be greatly inefficient. Back pressure is needed, but it is a fine balance between too much and not enough. The 3” pipes are what is stock diameters, so that isn’t a problem. I highly recommend equal length catted downpipes because you will gain low end torque, but trade off for top end speed, which isn’t important in a 4x4. Turbos usually don’t spool at low RPMs, because boost isn’t needed, until you need more RPM and power, then they will spool up and provide boost, once they reach the right RPM and speed, the turbos stop producing boost and the engine is running under its own unboosted power. If you are driving down the highway and have “rolling” gradual rises and falls on that stretch of highway, as you ascend a rise, your boost pressure might reach 3-5 psi to maintain your speed, but when you come down the other side, the boost drops out. Does this make sense? Basically, turbos are only operating at boost when added power is needed. If not, they spool down until you need more power... the unneeded residual boosted pressure is then released through the blow off valve located at the intercooler.

How do you shut off the cats so you don’t get a check light?
@geezernyounggun5136
@geezernyounggun5136 5 жыл бұрын
brent - You don’t want to take the O2 sensors out of the mix, how Ford sensor lines work in a daisy chain configuration, up and down the electrical stream. If something is missing that another sensor in that stream is relying on for information, that will trip a series of other CEL/MIL. Then it becomes a game of chase down the sensor, when there isn’t anything wrong with it at first, but could malfunction in the future. Also o2 sensors are important for engine operation, not just to keep the environment happy. They determine if the exhaust entering and leaving the catalytic converters is running rich or lean, which in turn tells the PCM to increase or decease the air/fuel ratio. Just get the spacers for the o2 sensors and that will eliminate your CEL issue, and ensure your engine is performing optimally.

This sounds nothing like a ricer. The problem is most exhaust companies try (and fail) to make the ecoboost sound like a V8, understandably so, because that's what most stubborn truck owners want. This exhaust sounds like a high performance V6 should, similar to the Ford GT or a GTR. Also, these trucks (including the regular f150 3.5 ecoboosts) can run much faster than that with some simple fueling system upgrades and E85 tuning. It's not hard to make 600whp and get these trucks into the mid 11s for under $3k.
