My first one, an ‘11 went 140k before I traded it in. It was still running very strong. My wife’s ‘11 Platinum went 60k before trading it in (she gets a new car every 2-3 years). Her second one, a ‘14 Plat went around 60k and then she went into a ‘17 Expedition with the 3.5, 48k on it. I’m currently driving a ‘18 XLT with the 3.5 and she just bought a Lincoln Nautilus with the 2.7. All the 3.5s ran like a top when traded in. For me the key was 5000 mile oil changes with a quality synthetic oil and Motorcraft filter, run top tier gas - we used 89 or 91-93. Motorcraft sparkplugs and air filter every 45-50k. Zero oil consumption on all of them. Don’t be scared to drive the daylights out of the thing, it’s good to keep them blown out. Don’t try to hyper-mile one, they love to be worked.

The reason is the 2.7L has smaller turbos than the 3.5L. A smaller turbo spools quicker than bigger one. The down side is they don't make the power a big turbo makes. When you take the Raptor and the Ram TRX off the table, the 2.7L F150 is the quickest truck sold in America to 60 MPH. The down side is by the end of the quarter mile its playing second fiddle to the 3.5L. Now when the Hurricane powered Ram hits the streets, this is a brand new ball game.

@@IndependenceIron not exactly. 7th gear is 1:1, so you have 3 overdrive gears. My SHO tuned with six gears will do 60 in the same time as the 3.5 truck. Of course I'm a bit lighter but not by much at 4400 pounds. 500+ lb-ft torque from 1500 rpm is pretty motivating no matter the gear 😉. The torque/hp curve is more telling than the max numbers especially when comparing the na to turbo engines.
@david-sv3kg5 жыл бұрын
A lot of it is the transmissions keeping the rpm in a tighter band allowing the factory and the tuners to optimize a really narrow region of performance... Older engines had much flatter hp/torque curves die to limited # of gears (which was one reason manuals used to be so much quicker...)

Most people don't know it but the 2.7 is statistically the most reliable engine sold in the F150. It has fewer warranty claims than all the others, likely due to the stout CGI cylinder block. @lil2.742 жыл бұрын
There is no comparison if you supercharge a 5.0. Its larger displacement and two more cylinders. The ceiling is much higher with the Coyote but that requires tremendously more dollars spent. On a tight budget you can't beat the Ecoboost. And the 3.5 can make 552whp tuned on e50 and a couple moddest bolt ons. An E85 tuned 5.0 with headers, cold air intake and Boss manifold only gets you to about 475. And you haven't purchased a supercharger yet. But for sure Supercharged Coyote engines are absolutely nasty. And there also numerous videos of Coyote NA guys that have those things moving. This is a dollar for dollar comparison. Ecoboost come from the factory with a power adder and despite the smaller engine, tuning can achieve more with a power adder.

@flamingdragon86 Lol...so I guess what you are trying to say is that all of the brilliant minds that have gotten the na Coyote to 475whp just haven't figured it out yet? Everything I have said is dead on. I guess you have a 552whp 5.0 Coyote with nothing but an e50 tune, CAI and a catback exhaust. You ought to be advertising it, your secrets will make you rich. You can do anything you put your mind to and without spending money. Good luck. Again, if you buy a new 5.0 F150 and a new 3.5 Ecoboost F150 and a maximum of 1000.00 bucks in mods is all that is allowed, the Coyote has no chance. It has a higher ceiling with extra money because it is the same DOHC 4V technology and more cubic inches, it doesn't come with a power adder straight off the lot. And a 5.0 na Coyote can scream, with catless longtubes etc. Again $$$$$. This video is about 3 of the offerings available in an F150, with a tune and the 5.0 lost. The comment I replied to was someone stating that they would like to see them up against a Supercharged Coyote. Why? Thats not an equal comparison. Superchargers aren't free. That is a major additional cost. If money doesn't matter I'd like to see my tuned 2.7 Ecoboost F150 up against a Twin Turbo Coyote Promod. I think I can take it, I can achieve anything I put my mind to. Lol, thanks for straightening me out.

I had a 2019 F150 with a 3.5 turbo, 3.73 axle. Used it to tow a 4800 lbs(dry wt) Winnebago Micro Minnie, with gear was about 5500 lbs. Used a reputable weight distribution hitch. Plenty of power whenever needed, BUT engine temp ran up to the red line whenever pulling up a modest grade, without over accelerating (60 mph). Often the turbos would shut down until temps returned to the normal range. Dealership and another shop could find nothing wrong, just saying "turbos run hot". To me, it felt like not if there was going to be a major overheating problem, but matter of when. Moved to a 2021 F250 with a 7.3 gas (non-turbo), with great luck. 25,000 miles so far towing a larger trailer (5800 lbs Winn. 2529RG with a lot of cargo in the truck bed, tons of power AND the temp gage has never even wiggled, even when towing in Montana hills this summer in sustained 100+ degree weather. It could be tricked by adding a little E85 to the tank of premium, since E85 is usually well over 100 Octane.

Also, at that time, I really didn't know Ford was putting 2.7 liter V-6's in their trucks. When I was out of sight from the dealership I opened that bad boy up and, HOLY SH_T, I said to myself "This V-8 is freaking awesome!" When I got home I opened the hood just to check it out and when I saw it labeled as a 2.7L V-6 my jaw dropped!! "What the F.......???!! Are you kidding me???? This is a 2.7L V-6 engine???? Ain't no way!!" I was totally floored by how powerful it was. I still wouldn't own one simply because 1) I drive a 2013 Expedition (5.4L), and 2) I pull a 22' boat (roughly 4-5,000 lbs w/ trailer). If I drove a pickup truck as a daily commuter and maybe some light duty hauling, I would definitely put the 2.7L on my list. The one drawback I might have would be the resale value.

@@lawnmowerdude Exactly, and those are Ford's made up numbers. GM SAE certifies all of their output numbers so no fudging it like Ford...
@briandonatelli70345 жыл бұрын
@@lawnmowerdude depends what you use the truck for.......not many people actually use a 1/2 ton to "work". Maybe pull a camper or boat here and there but looking around a construction site I usually see 3/4 and 1 tons. I would guess 90% of these 1/2 tons never pull half of what they can and will be lucky to see mud more than 2-3 times a year during hunting season.

I can only speak for 2 combinations. My 2.7 with 3.55 rear 2wd averages around 24mpg. My coworkers 5.0 with 3.15 rear also 2wd averages just about the same 24mpg as I do. Both completely stock.

I own 2019 F150 2.7L V6 Ecoboost, Supercrew, with Lariat trim. Spoke with many well known mechanics, and they all said, they've never seen any post 2015 2.7 Ecoboost came in for serious repairs, just usual maintenance. They are good engines, good on gas comparatively.
@bkranz-12835 жыл бұрын
Ecoboosts are a great package from the factory and great for tuning but to mod past that, you start running out of cost effective options. For really serious and expensive mods like aftermarket boost and compression modification the 5.0 has way more potential.
@lil2.742 жыл бұрын
It would have been nice to know the gear ratio of each truck. 3.31 is really common and I would say 3.55 is the runner up in how common it was used especially in the 2.7 trucks. Few 3.73 out there too.

@Condor19705 жыл бұрын
Sorry, most people aren't going to tune their trucks. A stock race would have been a proper test. It's not hard to push a turbo engine to create the power and acceleration you want. The question is, how long will that engine last compared to the V8?
@joshtavenner30735 жыл бұрын
whoever whatever Ford techs would probably say the V8 is shit now with all the issues they have had with the 2018-2019 version of the 5.0. I was between 2 used 2018s one with a 2.7 and other 5.0. Ended up with the 2.7 based on all the horror stories I’ve heard with the new 5.0s.

I didn't know racing on drag strip was the most important thing about having a truck. I used to think it was pulling a trailer with 16,000 lbs of rocks up an 8% grade in top gear all day every day without breaking a sweat.
