I've lost count of the number of times I've returned to this video over the years. It is just entertainment at its best. Watching Marion's zeal and playfulness, the amazing artistry of the Nicholas Brothers and all of it against the wonderful melody of Glenn's orchestra is simply amazing. Fox liked to put members of their "actors' stable" into roles in musicals. But unless the person was a trained musician their parts were usually dubbed. Romero's playing was done by Chummy MacGregor and Gleason's was by Doc Goldberg. Even star Lynn Bari's singing was dubbed by Pat Friday.

Billy wrote some amazing charts for the band but they were so far ahead of their time Miller rarely performed them. Try to find an air check of "Harlem Chapel Bells" (not easy, unf.) - it sounds like it could have been done in the mid-50s. The current band's conductor Erik Stabnau has pulled out a few other May compositions as well.

The depressing thought is that they were a "finishing act" because of racism. If you look at this one and, say, Chattanooga Choochoo, you'll notice there's a clean break in the music right before the brothers come on and it sounds almost like the music could've ended there. That was to allow southern state censors to cut out their scenes so audiences wouldn't have to see Black performers. For the same reason, the brothers were usually hired as guest stars, so their names wouldn't have to appear on the bill in southern states, and all of Glenn Miller's band on film were white.

I don't think it's true that every riff was composed. True, most of the time they were reading music, but there was still some 'jazz', when soloists could improvise (or at least play things they'd improvised at other times) I heard that the Glen Miller musicians grew so tired of playing 'In the mood' that they thoroughly hated it.

Nobody would be game to train for routines like theirs nowadays. Could damage oneself for the rest of one's life. The big swing bands and jazz bands of the late 'thirties and through the'forties. Did those musicians work for peanuts? Unaffordable now.

Thanks so much for the clip. It's criminal that the Nicholas Brothers aren't better known. They should've been among *the* biggest stars -- they were as elegant as Fred Astaire (whose work I love) and also were able to do athletic feats that he couldn't.

According to Wikipedia, it was (unfortunately) a common practice for Hollywood studios in the 1940s to edit out parts of clips of songs when prints were sent to Southern states. Thus, when performers like the Nicholas Brothers were featured rather than just as comic relief or stereotypical characters, Southern audiences never saw their dance routines.

The Modernaires. One the hottest, if not the best harmony groups to ever hit the airwaves. And Tex Beneke? If there is a definition of cool, this man is it. Sax player. Whistles like a bird in perfect pitch. And a voice as smooth as silk. And the tap dancers? Not sure who they are but goddamn. Never seen such smooth sailin. Absolute professionals. This is Olympic level gymnastics while wearing a tux and dress shoes with leather soles and TAPS 🤘🏾👊🏽 I try to comprehend the work put in and discipline, as Black men in the 1940s, to achieve this level of prowess and accomplishment. February 12, 2014: From the 1963 graduating class of Paschal High School, Fort Worth, Texas--Happy 100th birthday to a great Paschal alumnus, the late Gordon Lee ("Tex") Beneke! You and Mr. Miller and all your associates did so much to boost the morale and determination of so many Americans during one of our country's darkest times. It was our parents' generation, and in memory of our parents and all other members of their generation--The Greatest Generation--who served the cause of liberty in so many ways, military and civilian alike, during and after that time, so that we might have the opportunity to enjoy the lives we have lived, we proudly salute you! Your wonderful music sounds as good today as ever!

Here in Dallas Texas 2020 I loved what you said you hit the nail on the head! I'm loving that I found this clip from the movie. My father and his brothers served their part in WWII. I grew up listening to big band music and I wished I could've seen Glenn Miller's band but I did get to take my dad to see Count Basie and his band. My dad said he saw him at Radio City Music Hall in 1945 he acted like a kid he was so excited I was able to do a meet and greet with pictures and autographs. I'm so glad this is the extended clip that included the amazing dancing of the Nichols Brothers.
