Enlisted start an an E1 private or seaman recruit in the navy and coast guard, and go up Sargent major of the army/marine corps/Air Force depending on branch or master chief petty officer of the navy/coastguard depending on branch. In the trench wars of WW 1, this happened quite a lot. Especially after conscript soldiers of both sides were dug in in the trenches for months with nothing really moving forward, they often tried to make their lives a little easier and agreed to just "not notice" each other when on patrol on their respective sides. Plus in the specific situation of a surprise close quarter standoff like this, it actually makes a lot of sense, because if they all have fairly quick reaction times, a very likely outcome would be that everyone gets killed or at least hurt if someone pulls the trigger. Chances are even if you are the one who shoots first, the other guy isn't dead quickly enough to not be able to bend his trigger finger, too. The other pair aiming at each other who'd both simultaneously react to the first shot fired are even more likely to both hit each other.

Now I wonder what a group of Imperials and Rebels would think of they ran into an old clone trooper. I could imagine the Rebels at first hate the guy because he and his kind wiped out the Jedi and installed the Galactic Empire while the Imperials would look down on the guy because they had respect and high expectations for the clones, but grew to see them as old and obsolete relics of a failed era. But both units are also technically descendants of the Republic Military and thus the clones. The Imperials in a literal sense obviously, but the Rebels basically used a lot of Republic tactics, ships, and weapons. Plenty of leaders and members were from the Republic military and many rebels were initially trained by Jedi and Clones. I wonder if the soldiers would then feel sorry for the clones when they learn about the inhibitor chips, the fact clones are made with numbers first and get their names later, and the fact they actually wiped out the only people who have a damn about them. And after all that, they just get tossed aside for the most part. A cruel existence.

There's a comic that tells the tale of a Clone Trooper that gets marooned on a remote planet. Years later the Rebellion lands on the planet chased by the Empire. The Clone sees the Stormtroopers and just assumes they're Clones with updated weapons and armour. The Stormtroopers see the Clone and are immediately confused, however an officer decides that it has to be a Rebel trick and orders the Stormtroopers to fire. The Clone runs away feeling REALLY confused and runs into Luke Skywalker. He's informed Luke is a Jedi and basically from there joins the Rebellion.
