Intensive study has been directed to understand the role of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed on lithium battery anodes. It is believed to be accountable for the charge/discharge properties, cycle-ability and lifetime of the battery. In-situ AFM has been used to directly visualize the formation and evolution of SEI on the nanometer scale, but its widespread use has been hindered by the lack of stringent environmental control required for lithium battery materials. We will describe the setup that enables in-situ observation, demonstrate its fitness in monitoring SEI formation, and showcase its relevance in the search of high capacity anode alternatives.
