In a somber turn from our usual explorations, today's video from Adventures into History reveals a heartbreaking scene at the Mahone-Ingram Cemetery. This video documents a troubling act of vandalism that has recently plagued this historic site, a stark contrast to the tales of discovery and preservation that we typically share.
Five months ago, we uncovered the initial signs of vandalism, with individuals cutting down ancient cedar trees, allowing them to fall recklessly on graves, and dragging them across the cemetery, carelessly knocking over fieldstone headstones in the process. In response, we installed cameras and began a vigilant monitoring effort to protect the cemetery. Despite a quiet period of five months, our worst fears were realized when the vandals returned, this time felling a historic oak tree and leaving behind a disheartening mess.
The Mahone-Ingram Cemetery is more than just a burial ground; it began as the final resting place for the enslaved individuals of the Mahone family, with their descendants continuing to use it for burials long after. The cemetery is a tangible link to our shared past, holding stories of resilience, family, and history that must be preserved.
This video takes you through the extent of the damage, shares insights into the cemetery's significant history, and marks the beginning of our efforts to clean up and restore dignity to this sacred space. It's a reminder of the ongoing challenges in preserving our historical sites and the need for community vigilance and respect for our collective heritage.
We stand committed to the preservation of these important places, and though today's video is a departure from our usual content, it underscores the importance of our mission to protect and honor our history. Join us in reflecting on the impact of such acts and the steps we can take together to prevent them in the future.

How to stop thieves who should go to jail and have to pay for repairs. We pray they get caught. Thank you and please do more like this. Get people to help you.

Robert, thank you for doing this. As a person that had to watch as the cemetery that my Grandparent are in was sold. The cemetery was sold to a man that though he was going to just remove the headstones, and build a building on the grounds. I can relate with you Robert. My family and I take care of a Cemetery that has been in use since just after the Civil war. It was, at one time, a camp site for General Sterling Price and the 6000 Confederate troops he commanded. My family were some of the first burials there. A family moved in to the area across from the cemetery in the 70's and tried to take over the cemetery, running visitors out and threatening others. Many , many graves are marked with field stones and they removed many of the field stones and most of the foot stones. After a windstorm that blew over half the trees in the area, they piled the trees from the cemetery on graves to try and burn them and ended up that they set the cemetery on fire. I scraped melted flowers from headstones for weeks. This family also has taken things from the cemetery and even buried their family over the graves of others. I realize our circumstances are different, but I do understand how you feel. I wish I was there to help you clean up. I would bring back all the Wisteria I could carry because it won't grow well here in Missouri and It costs a fortune!! Thank you for what you are doing. 1

The measure of our character is what we do and why we do it when no one is watching, and nobody was watching you this day Robert, only a camera. You didn't have to share your find or your remedy even though you recorded it but, you put it out there to bring information of these types of abuses happening all over our natural wild areas. Thank you for your contribution to our collective consciousness about the abuses some can bring to our historic sites. You're the best my friend. And I'm glad you're carring when you are out there in the wilds and you're alone!!! Be safe! K.

My house is 121 years old and I have a black walnut tree in my yard that is as old as my house. The senseless actions of people just don't seem to shock people anymore, an opportunity to take advantage of a cemetery that's the lowest of low, I mean REALLY!? I really hope they are caught. Didn't know it was a cemetery, oh come on, people!? Haul, all of that cut wood out of there and sell it. Then, take the money for some cameras or other items to try and maintain it. Again, this is the lowest of low people to do this. Cut it up into the smallest chunks you can, they'll think twice, oh wait they don't think.

I can’t help but be suspicious that it is an inside job, that someone either directly or indirectly associated with the company that owns the land is doing this and flying under their radar- or is benefiting from someone looking the other way. This is so upsetting on so many levels.

The thought crossed my mind, but I don’t think it’s connected to the company per se, but maybe a hired timber worker who was contracted. However more than likely it’s someone who just poaches trees and has a saw mill. They’re not using logging equipment, but are using what a saw mill owner would have.

The depth of evil it takes to desecrate a cemetery in this manner is hard to fathom. This goes far beyond mere greed and disrespect. I’ve learned from you how important the cedar trees are in a cemetery, and to destroy that big old one which in turn destroyed the graves….aarrgh!!!!! I pray whoever is responsible is caught and punished to the fullest extent. Having seen your video from a few months back and now to see this…. I am just heartsick!! So grateful you are taking such care to clean the headstone, replace the fieldstones and remove the debris, but I think you need some help! I have such a great respect for what you are doing, I actually caught a few people in the act of cutting out cider trees in our old family graveyards, and now I make it a point to go by all of them in the area at random times in the effort to be able to catch vandalizum and folks in this area don't have any patiences for that sorta thing.

This is heartbreaking! The destruction of trees and damage to the graves themselves is reprehensible.

Your a good man, Robert to care so deeply for these resting communities. Nothing but disrespect and greed. I am sooo sorry for what has happened to the resting people in this cemetery.😢😡 Fat lighters are also known as rich pine here in Texas. Daddy was a woodworker and would save any rich pine pieces when he found their stumps on the ground.

How horrible, and how heartbreaking. Those stones are Museum Pieces and I hope that when these thieves are caught, they are fined millions and put into a Trust! A mahor cleanup, and a wall with an iron gate should be built around it along with a huge sign out front showing the Historical Value of this acreage. New trees planted, new headstones along with the originals put back and cataloged, and a small home built for a full time headmaster and protector. That fine money should be enough for at least 100 years of protection and upkeep. Prayers going your way for a loud voice for ALL Cemeteries!

I'm not a descendant of African American Slaves & this totally p*sses me off, hurts my feelings, breaks my heart. NO ONE should EVER destroy, tamper with, disrespect, etc... ANY person from ANY nationality's final resting place, period. Here n Missouri, someone that destroys a cemetery gets n BIG trouble. My granpa has been the head guy on a lot of the cemetery boards around our town & has sooo many books on all the cemeteries that he has recorded burials n & they are AMAZING to go back through & read. I pray that the vandals r found & prosecuted to the fullest of y'all's law there n Georgia. U sir, r a good man w/a awesome soul. May God Bless u Robert 🫶🙏🙏🫶 Much Love & Respect from Missouri, stay safe & always watch ur 6.

Thank you for all of the work you have done here. I am in Nebraska and years ago, farmers used to throw the tombstones in ditches from old white settlers cemeteries when they assumed there were no descendants left in the area. Its all very sad. 😢

Oh my God this is absolutely so upsetting. 💔 I mean this is why it's really important to make sure all of the cemeteries are protected including the oak trees or important trees, flowers, or plants that's been there for a long time. It's a good idea we all can come together to volunteerto get cemeteries get cleaned up, restored to better state. It breaks my heart to see such amount of disrespect. I am glad that you guys work together to make sure this kind of stuff don't happen again. Thank you for always sharing with us and allowing people to be aware of history and what we can do to protect such beautiful places like here in the video. 😊

So sad to think human beings can be so destructive in regards to all these people who should be at rest and respected. I’m sure they would be so grateful for your help trying to clean up this wreckage and vandalism by finding displaced and broken stones and setting them back up to show your respect. Wish you had some helpers, that’s a lot of work for one person.

Good for you, Robert! I'm 100% behind you on this! I absolutely hate any kind of desecration to cemeteries. They should be respected. I hope you can thwart these thieves to not being able to use what they are trying to take for free.
