At the end of the day I think this whole thing said more about OUR community than it did about Shea Moisture. It's crazy how we blew this out of proportion and in every forum people are making up their own definitions of diversity and blackness. So now we go from an idiotic commercial to alienating those of us who apparently aren't black enough for some of y'all and that is crazy disheartening. The real work starts with us and I'm tired of people getting angry every time they feel slighted but not doing anything about it. A lot of y'all have been talking about fully investing in 100% black owned businesses since Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown and we're still in the same damn place. I'm tired of being mad and watching black people alienate other black people because it's the easy way out. At this point if you're not going to do the work to spark change then there's no sense in causing all of this commotion.

@The Third Eye Journey What do you mean alienating those who aren't black enough? Black people don't look like a monolith and of course in a commercial centering white women...they go for the most palatable POC. I'm not gonna play any oppression olympics, but that was done on purpose. I'm not upset about it or gonna try to tell people how to identify themselves but that doesn't mean it's bad to have a convo around what Shea Moisture commercial was suppose to signify from the people they chose to the script that we heard. Even though this is not the main point of your comment, I don't think that part should be convoluted into something negative...I think people are just noticing a trend.

@mysteryell13 So I'll elaborate because that point wasn't made in the context of the discussion over the ad itself. For example, I watched another video on this topic from a fellow KZbinr who is black with skintone on the lighter spectrum and hair in the 3b to 4a category. She said that she wasn't sure how she felt about proceeding following the whole debacle but that she wasn't necessarily as upset once she saw the other commercials within the campaign. There were quite a few comments essentially telling her that because of her light skin and hair texture she had no way of understanding systematic white supremacy and that she really had no say in the matter as a woman with lighter skin. Unfortunately, I've heard a lot of statements such as that and it is heavily problematic. Yes, the use of racial ambiguity is a problem in mainstream media but we also can't lose sight of the fact that black is black. There are too many people that have adopted this new idea that there is a criteria for being black and that if you fit that criteria then you are supposed to be a champion for every single issue. My overall point is that we are allowing problematic issues to create a void within our community and if we don't fix those cracks within then we won't fix anything. I do believe that the topic of what SM did is soooooo important, but we won't reach resolutions until we love EACH OTHER more. Sorry that this was so long lol.

No, you're right...there are definitely cases of black people overstepping other black people in spite. I understand. Nobody should have the ability to strip someone of their black experience just because they're lighter skinned with curly hair. I think what I was gearing more toward was equal representation of all black people in the media and why light skinned curly haired people are considered more palatable. I misunderstood what you were alluding to.

Having a dark skin woman with "4c" hair in the commercial still wouldn't change the fact that the quality of their products went down... shea moisture should've been cancelled......
@tjtanner9311

I think having the darkest skin and 4c hair is seen as literally at the bottom of the totem pole in terms of Eurocentric standards of beauty which you can probably understand why a lot of black women are saying they don't feel their beauty, complexion and hair type is represented in this commercial and such all the time. That's why they're upset. I would also agree that we need representation of like you said male naturals and locs.

SunKissedTaeTae I just started using Shea moisture 3 months ago. So I had no Idea about the product changing. all I know is that the hair smoothie worked great on my 4a 4b hair. And the JBCO leave in worked great on my daughters 3a 3b hair. I was sad about the commercial being a dark skin woman because Aussie, Herbal Essence, and Garnier has always been 100% WHITE so I thought finally darker skin women are going to get some attention in a huge way with Shea Moisture. But I should have known that will never happen! I guess I am going to get to see more WHITE WOMEN 99.9% of the time in hair commercials because now I know that's what the people all over the world wants. Have a nice day.

I know how to make my own deep conditioner if i need to and i just need something awesome to detangle my hair with. what goes in it afterwards just isn't that deep for me. my fav way to moisturize my hair is with this $3 hair lotion from family dollar. And I actually just found an awesome $4 dollar detangling spray too lol so I'm kinda good 😕 unless I'm straightening my hair or long term protective styling I just don't need much else. The exorbitant price tags made me put the jars and bottles back where it came from. I saw the whole thing as a hustle. They didn't have to be cheap, but they didn't have to be double their counterparts, either! The natural hair hustle was too dang real. Organic Root Stimulator (Namaste) has been my favorite for over a decade now. SM really blew it. TRUST! He'll see on the next business quarter that he played himself. This newly targeted audience doesn't have to show ANY undying brand loyalty. Too many other products already exist! The ones you alienate always end up being the ones you try so desperately to win back. This won't be that easy. Sadly, as long as we hold the money that they so desperately want, the games to snatch it up will continue. I don't mind going DIY on these fools! I already mix my own acrylic powders, nail polishes, cuticle balms and most recently, sugar scrubs. I have a big container of flaxseed in the kitchen and I'm shopping for other goodies online. I wish you the best on your haircare quest!

That is why I make own products. I buy raw Shea butter and make my own creams. That way I know what goes in to the end product. I'm a mix of type 4 hair. Yes it would be nice to see more men on products as from what I can see the men and women's products are not that much different.

Julia Bell Agreed. I started DIY ing early in my hair journey so now I know what my hair likes and how best to use things, so if I want to buy something from the store I'm generally very good at choosing effective products based on ingredients. I've only had a handful of fails and have never been a product junkie.

I'm not dark-skin, nor do I have the kinkiest hair, but I'm tired of seeing the same ol' same ol'. Women with lighter skin, and looser hair textures continue to be the focal point of certain natural hair lines. We need to see more diversity within our own community, locs, twists, kinks, coils and curls. They could've done an entire hair hate add with every type of curl pattern, texture, and hairstyle that Black women wear, but the direction they chose to go in made me end my relationship with them. I already lost faith in them because the formulas changed, and that meaningless "Break the Walls" campaign...this was the final straw for me.

I don't think 4c naturals are saying they have it the worse, I think they're saying they get the least representation and are the least accepted. Although I do agree that people with locs need to be more included and represented in the natural hair community.
@AfrikanHairGod
@AfrikanHairGod 7 жыл бұрын
Eboni Williams they are saying that and they are pulling the pity party card but the gag is: all they are doing is reinforcing the good hair/bad hair rhetoric. I see nothing wrong with acknowledging the issues and struggles one has experienced with their hair but when you try to dismiss or deny someone else's issues as more or less then yours then you aren't working to dismantling the favoritism toward textures which is just as harmful to our community and encourages divide and separation instead of sharing in each other's experiences as one community.

To me the issue isn't them expanding to other hair textures/races. A lot of mainly white owned/used hair companies have started to expand to black women which is cool. My issue is why are the formulas changing? Can't ya just make a SEPARATE line for their hair texture? Other companies don't change their formula, they do just that create a SEPARATE line for us. For example (Pantene). My Jamaican Black Castor Oil leave in is sooooo fucking runny now. Like come on! I almost spilled it when I first opened it!

Denise Vasquez yeah. I used all of the leave in and deep conditioner and had not repurchased...just down to the runny shampoo now and the rinse out conditioner. While I do agree that curly haired 3s and such, do face texture discrimination also. It is not comparable to those in the 4s, because they also face texture discrimination inter-communally. Whereas 3s and 2s hair is praised and lauded as "good hair" in the black community. Those with kinky hair face texture discrimination from every angle.

You're right. I felt betrayed when Carols Daughter sold out and essentially stop producing products that worked on my hair, and I felt the same way after reading the Shea Moisture comments. The commercial didn't really bother me. It was only after reading the comments that I felt that feeling of deja vu. A couple of years back I was fearful Shea Moisture would do the same as Carols Daughter because they started churning out way too many product lines. I thought hmmm are they trying to be L'Oréal? Sure enough they were. All I can say to Shea Moisture is don't forget about the consumer base that put you on the map like Carols Daughter did. Keep making products that are effective for your customer base and they will keep buying, stop and they won't. There was really no need to imitate when all they have to do is innovate and stay true to your customers regarding product quality and pricing. Add all the lines you want, but keep the ones that work without modifying ingredients or watering them down. In the end it doesn't matter who we support. They say only support black owned, yet black owned kick us to the curb as soon as they get rich.😞

Don't know why people so upset, when ya'll been taking a shit on Shea Moisture for 3 years. KZbin is loaded with anti-SheaMoisture hair gurus since before this ad ever came out and before product got tampered with. Most of those videos were because of price, quantity of product, and the fact that product didn't work for them despite being a favorite amongst others. What goes around comes around, in my not so humble opinion. Loved your video cuz you so got me when you pulled out the jug. Omg I love you, when I seen that water jug I was like it's going down! I was asked to do a video and do my take on it, I really don't care either shea moisture hasn't done anything that these other companies didn't do. I've been using Shea moisture for 7 years and never have they ever sent me a PR package, they typically send them to the girls with looser textures, oh well 😔

I definitely agree about the watering down of products. like some of their products I used to love, they don't work as well. honestly, people have to use what works for them. I've tried stuff from other brands that others raved about that SUCKED. so if a SM product works for me, I'm gonna continue purchasing and buying it. I refuse to be bald because of it 😂😂😂 you actually are right about the lack of the male naturals or the loc'd naturals . I swear I'm always learning something different watching your videos!!

conpanies just want to sell their products, they dont want or have to support Black/ mixed/ white/ asian/whatever. Conpanies like this just say they support black ppl bc this is what sell their products. That is all i'm saying (sorry if there was any mistakes in my comment, im from Brazil )

The ad was based on hair hate and a racially ambiguous or a biracial person do not face hair hate like a type 4 person especially 4c. When I think about what is least accepted in society it is not white straight hair the standard of beauty. I don't care if they want to expand but don't walk over the backs of black people who relentlessly promoted your products and bought them since forever.

A LARGE segment of black women who use Shea Moisture hair products say that the products are garbage snd that it doesn't work well on their hair. I have never had a desire to use Shea Moisture products or Carol's Daughter products, for that matter. I use products that work for my hair whether the company that owns the products are black or white.Pro-black black men and women will one day learn that one ought not put their faith in all things black because black people will ALWAYS let you down. Smh
