Thanks for posting an update video! We were glad to help out and yes you may of paid retail but we do stand behind our machines if there is a major problem, we will make it right, that's why you are paying retail. They machine was checked out originally by an ex employee who we had let go right after he looked at that machine. But that is not your problem, at the end of the day its our name on the line and that's why we made it right with you. I would also like to note that this is an 8,000 hour dozer and not the normal low hour ones we sell. Yes I agree Deere needs to let go of the software to work on these machines. They are getting older now and it doesn't justify paying a dealer or a field tech to come out and fix. Normally the people buying these older machines have some mechanical knowledge and could do some of the testing and calibrating there selves if they could get the software. I am actually making a video today on how to calibrate the transmission on a Deere dozer so hopefully other people can do it. Thanks for feedback.

Good comment Clint. However, Mike as a retail purchaser WAS the recipient of the shoddy PDI (pre-delivery inspection) done by C&C Equipment. Even though your shop manager should have caught, some of the issues, he didn't. And, you are the end of the line of any problems. Best stop being complacent & more active... as you have shown!

It's great to see others talking about the right to repair. One thing we can all do is call and email state and federal representatives, let them know that this is important to you. With mid-term elections coming up, if you get the chance go to a rally or town hall meeting and ask them about it in person.

I had never heard the term "right to repair" until this week in a news article. I don't know if the State of Maine or the Federal government are looking at it but someone is talking about it. Again, I had never heard about it before. I'm an old carpenter not an equipment owner.
@BobPegram

Let's be fair; incompetent owner/repairmen can screw up pieces of equipment far worse than ever happens "naturally" (originally). (Mustie1 "Other shop gave up" kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKHFhJuha8uAmdE ) That said, many repair services/shops are just as incompetent! (See Car Wizard "How did the Dealer miss this?" kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHS1lWWgoNVog8k ) You should have access to what you need to repair your own equipment!! The solution to the problem of botched repairs should NOT be that only the agents of the manufacturers can repair them! The solution should be that the necessary information to do a repair properly is made widely known. Software, a major source of problems, already does this with open source software. Lots of folks get to see the code and fix it as well as neaten it up and make it more understandable, even if only by comprehensive comments embedded with the code.

It's great to finally see youtubers like to help push "right to repair" especially since many in the US government are in the pockets of big corporations and not willing to allow farmers, Big equipment operators all the way down to phone repair shops fix anything. It is more like you are paying for items for a long term lease and can only pay the same company to repair the item instead of outright owning it and being able to fix yourself

I was stationed at Ramstein AB, Germany working on the Air Force Vehicle Fleet. We had a ton of BlueBird and Thomas busses with Caterpillar engines. Every time there was an engine issue, we had to park it and have Fleet Management coordinate a contract for a Caterpillar Dealer Technician to come out to troubleshoot and repair. On average, the vehicle was down between 3-6 months. Caterpillar would NOT provide the test equipment and tools to do the repairs ourselves. They did offer to train some of our technicians at the governments expense (about three times more than a non-government student). They would only train a government technician who would be assigned to the shop for at least 10 years and ONLY that technician can use the equipment and tools. Not feasible with the military technicians since we move and deploy often. The local civilians contracted to work with us tend to stay much longer, but none of them wanted to be responsible for the equipment and maintenance unless their contracts were amended to include the special duties as well as an increase in pay for those special duties. I don't blame them. They deserve to get paid for what they do. Anything extra is required to be added to their contracts and paid appropriately. But our local leadership didn't want to do it. Needless to say, all this BS was up channeled to the pentagon and a recommendation to utilize LOCAL vehicles would be cheaper and easier to maintain. Costs would be about 60% less. Unfortunately, the Pentagon will only honor its current contracts with the long time Big Corporations and feels that changing contracts would be catastrophic for the relationships with those companies. In other words, those we rely on to ensure we can do our mission cared more about their backdoor deals and reach arounds. So, our busses continued to sit for up to half a year for a 2-3 hour test and repair service at an astronomical cost that siphons too much of our annual maintenance budget. The newer the vehicles get, the more complicated they are to work on and the less WE are able to do without the manufacturer. Not exactly the type of equipment we want to utilize in a wartime situation or peace time emergencies.

There are a lot more theses days fighting the big manufacturer to let the farmers and other service tech into the computers. This was the same when cars starting to have more computers they didn't want the small guys to be able to service the cars but ended up losing that battle. The same is happening AG an heavy equipment. Why should you be down for 8 to 24 hours for a fix that take 15 minutes that most mechanic can do them self. People are really fighting for right to repair. They understand they don't want them to be able to do everything but to do the basic stuff there shouldn't be a problem.

I agree! When they sell the equipment they charge us for every part. If we own every part, we should have access to every part. Fairly simple, until lawyers and politics get involved. None of which are bought with the equipment. Great video and salute to C&C equipment! 🇺🇸💪

The computers and emissions are the biggest troubles with newer equipment. Had to change a heater control valve on a tractor. We done it and still didn’t work. Called a friend that’s a dealer tech. He said has to have the part number installed in the computer to work. So had to dig old one from scrap which was still on top and they had to come out and do the computer gig. Service call fee then the mileage and then a computer fee added up to like $500 to simply change numbers in the computer to make it work. He wasn’t there 10 minutes to complete it.

agreed , every new vehicle manufacturer does the exact same thing, biggest example with almost all new vehicles going to drive by wire when one goes, it is the same procedure, buy the part yourself , then install and the same code comes up on the dash, so you book the appt , take it in and the put in the new serial # of the part and its get programmed and then the ECU gets updated its does a test, and the you get the green check mark on the test equipment and away you go, so the part was $1200.00 and the programming is 1 hr equals another 130.00/hr and taxes = $1500.00 and then they tell you next time just buy it we program it for you and you take it home and change it yourself using a 3 or 4 mm allen wrench, 😎

There is one new (to me) fact coming out in this video, that may explain a lot. The 850 J spent the first 8ooo working hours in a coal mine and exposed to crystalline silica dust. Coal dust is electrically conductive and over time can complicate a machines electronics. I'm a retired Paramedic and not a Mechanic but as I listened to Mike reviewing the issues, I thought coal dust was worth mentioning. Cheers from Canada.

I work for a major corporation that too had their machines locked down and sensors could only be changed or calibrated by us with proprietary software. I have observed this updating equipment on airplanes. We have our Einstein politicians in DC to thank for their endless wisdom. There is no rational reason an owner can't connect a laptop and perform maintenance or repairs. It's all about who owns the software and how it's used. And, I must say, C&C certainly did an upstanding job… after all, you bought it ‘used as-is’. The issue with right to repair is whether or not you actually own your equipment that you paid for. If you have no access to the software that operates the machine you are not the owner, in my humble opinion. To illustrate how much money is at stake, all you have to do is to see how much money is spent by manufacturers lobbying law makers who allow them to get away with this robbery. When you purchase something you should own it lock stock and barrel. It is essentially the same as buying a house from a contractor but he won't allow you into the basement where the heater and air conditioner are.

I have repaired appliances for years and if the makers had to go out here and repair some stuff, they would design them different on some things. So I know a little bit about what your talking about. As much as a piece of equipment like the 850J costs an owner should be able to do that stuff theirself. Ive been operating equipment sense I was 16 years old. Ive operated alot of different types of machinesand sizes , CAT, Komastu, John Deere, Terex and so on. I have to say John Deere, in my opion is the best dozer As Far as pushing and Steep hill climbing and ease of operating and grading winching in certain applications, and the 850 Series are a Great Dozer.for all it. The 850 K LGP with a 6 way blade is a Absolute Bull/ Billygoats..As fad as clean up and Climbing abilities The 850K LGP. Is an awesome machine for it.Now working around tight spaces cleaning up the 450 , 700, are great for that. What Im trying to say is John Deere really came a long way. Now this is all PRE DEF Systems. I would much rather operate a John Deere then any other. But thats my Preference. I think you will be really happy with the 850 J. And if You ever get an opportunity to operate a 850 K LGP with the 6 way blade. Do it for sure. Youll understand what Im saying. The DEF systems are all JUNK and useless and just another money grabbing bullshit like the EGR valves are. And its bullshit that an owner of the Equipment cant go in and Change things in the computer to set stuff up. They are All the same way when it comes to that and it needs TOO CHANGE. on some of the issues i can see were the dealer might have not know they were issues. but I'm glad all issues were resolved and the dealer did there best once the issues were brought to there attention . I agree with the programing issue. it's just as bad autos as well. I can't see it costing that much to do a service call for say 3 hrs. our dealer charges $90.00 phr. includes trip time. well i hope things stay working for a long time.

I'm really glad to hear that you're pretty sure you got all the bugs worked out of the new to you 850. I do wish you had called C&C first, not because of all the drama that fell out, but to see if they really would have been so willing to make it right. That would have told the REAL story, I'd like to think they would have, but they do sell used equipment without a warrantee so where do they draw the line?

Not the first time I've heard of this complaint with the dealers service calls! I think it's time for a class action suit for all owners to make this change happen unless of course the manufacturers are willing to be a little bit more cooperative!

Farmers and trucking companies have been bitching about getting access to the computers etc for a while now and as you said Mike , the companies are not allowing us access and that is total bullshit , along with the emissions , that can put a small business and farmers and even the owner operator of a semi trucking business out of business 😪

Mike, I can see that C&C has stepped up and addressed some issues that should have been caught when it was "run through the shop," and to put a point on it, I think we've all had issues with "bad employees" screwing up our reputation, and from what you've been saying, C&C has done just about everything they can do to address the issue. I know there were a lot of negative comments in that first video, but in my opinion, it just shows how loyal your viewers are. Probably again that is based on a lot of us agreeing with stuff you say.

C&C did well once they actually knew you had problems, you strong and silent type, LOL. They are good but they can't read your mind DP🤣. Communication buddy👍. They got rid of the incompetent employee that didn't do proper inspections who should have caught the track, obvious filter issues and perhaps the muffler one as well. The other hidden stuff even if he had been a top employee he likely wouldn't have noticed those as I'm sure during their inspections they don't dig earth for 8 hours long enough for the other issues to show up. Glad things seem to have settled. Loved the side by side comparison of the dozers. We had to fight for decades for car owners to have the right to take their cars to whom they wanted for scheduled maintenance without the dealers being able to void their warranties. Looks like a similar fight needs to be done for heavy equipment owners to work on their own equipment at least the stuff is no longer under warranty.

Thanks for the LONG awaited 850J update. First thing before I forget… you have to teach Chris (Letsdig18) your video finger snap trick. When I first heard of the 850J issues I wondered why you didn’t quickly contact C&C. In hindsight it would have worked out a lot better if you did. I wasn’t ready to throw C&C under the bus because in today’s economy a business built on underhanded sales tactics isn’t going to be in business very long. In the very least they should have been given the opportunity to say no to helping with the 850. Near the end of this video, you mentioned an important piece of information… you believe the amount you paid for the 850 was on the upper end. If that is the case (and I agree) then C&C would be further motivated to help with the 850 problems… and they were. It would be a mistake not to acknowledge the support of your You Tube fan base. I’m sure it played a material part in this story. Looking forward to seeing the J push for many years to come.

I have a 15 Duramax with the LML engine. This engine uses the CP4 pump which is known for disintegrating and taking out the fuel system if you're not using good fuel. The issue is lack of lubricity. So to alleviate my fears I have been adding Stanadyne Lubricity improver to the fuel. Stanadyne makes diesel injection pumps so I'm fairly confident in the quality of their product and the reviews I've read are positive towards it. When I lived in Minnesota, most stations switched to #1 Diesel or a blend. Where I live in South Dakota, the winters aren't as cold and stations just put additives in the fuel.
@batterpm11

Adding a fuel pump also helps the longevity of that CP4 since for some reason the Duramax does not come with one.
@adubbelde1
@adubbelde1 2 жыл бұрын
@@batterpm11 there is a fuel pump but it's inadequate as far as providing clean fuel to the CP4. A lift pump with filters provides clean air free fuel to the CP4. FAS is one brand, but they're about $1000

There seems to be something about following youtubers that triggers some people into thinking that they have a right to interfere between parties when things aren't quite going as they should. Like what's happened with this dozer, it should have just been left between yourself and C&C to sort out, but people just couldn't resist the urge to involve themselves in it. Now yes, it's nice that people will look out for each other, but at the same time, it can create tremendous animosity too, and I think there's some people need to go have a bit of a think about that. Anyway, I'm going to consider this all done and dusted, onward we go eh?

John Deere may not be the only one who is anti right to repair, but they are the voice of it in the industry. And it certainly isn't new to them, they've played games with repair since at least the late 70s. Other companies keep their anti right to repair quieter, but doesn't mean they are less so.
