I love your turkey ,brings back a lot of memories . When I was a kid. Living with my grandparents, they hatched three turkeys. Only one lived so they gave him to me . I named him Bimbo .loved that little bird so much . Our neighbor's dog came to our place and that dog killed my little Bimbo . Was s sad day . I love watching your videos . You are definitely living the best life . Lots of hard work , but so rewarding. So to you I say , take care , and God bless .

@@billquantrill4960 My family has had several reunions there. My Grandparents 50th anniversary gathering was held there. They are both gone now. Along with all my great Aunts and Uncles. With our family scattered throughout the Midwest, and without the older generations anchoring us to Missouri. We will probably never gather in MO again. But who knows maybe we will all travel over 700 miles just for the chance to see the old family homestead once again. I remember the first time my grandmother pointed out her family members in the old black and white photos they had on display in the history display at the Park. My older siblings were working on their family tree project for their High School history class. We still have the photos somewhere, that my father took of the display photos. In fact I am determined to make it back to Missouri some day. Lot of fun memories of visiting my Grandparents. Springfield, Ava, Neosha, Joplin are just a few of the town's my Grandparents lived in throughout my life time.

@@rachelgibson1858 Nice. Its great to know family history. We're about a year away from buying an acreage in southern Missouri. We now live in the central part of the sate but would like to get a hobby farm further south. Probably somewhere between Springfield and Cabool. I just want to avoid the areas where they allow all of the poultry barns. A few chickens are fine, but a thousand of them are pretty smelly.
@rachelgibson1858

@@billquantrill4960 LOL Yeah. I live in Ohio on our family farm. The lands been in my father's family for over 100yrs. We stopped raising sheep around the time i was born in 79. Strictly a crop farm since. We have had chickens over the years. But currently have none. The farmer just to the south was said to have sold his fields to a Poultry company. But so far no barns have been built. Fingers cross it never happens. I am a die hard country girl. I truly believe people have the right to do what they want with their own land. I just don't want to have to smell the poultry barns.

I'm surprised people actually questioned you touching the baby bunnies. Not just in the case of meat rabbits, but even pet rabbits, you should check the babies everyday. Look at them, make sure they're being fed properly, and also for handling purposes, so that they get used to being handled by people. Handling the babies is actually 'really, really' important.

Trent Nelsen Good choice. 👍 We visited a friend's farm last week and he has a great set up with his turkeys. They get to range large areas so they are healthy and strong. (If you clip one wing you don't need to have overhead netting. They fly in circles. If you clip both than they can manage to get up higher.) He likes the heritage breeds. He saw his neighbor raise a broad breasted turkey and it grew so fast that it could barely walk. (If it had lived any longer it wouldn't have been able to at all.) Those turkeys are artificially inseminated because their chests are so abnormally large that they can't breed. It sounded disgusting and inhumane. He would never raise those, says heritage are the way to go. I would think that if one is going back to a more natural and traditional way of life, one should avoid the big Ag methods.

I am so excited for you to have the blue slate turkeys!! We had them a few years ago and you are correct in the fact that they are broody! We hatched so many --well our hens--and the neat thing about ours were that 3 Mamma's shared the nest and took turns getting off to eat & drink! It was the coolest thing. I want some again after watching your video! We got ours at about 6-8 months of age in spring and enjoyed our first home raised turkeys for Thanksgiving! It was so much fun and our 20 year old son (then 14) was the one who butchered them for us!!! Great experience and great tasting! Excited to watch your progress with them, and also interested in how the others turn out. Thanks for the great video again! -Kristy in West Plains!
