I rented a 2019 4Runner a few months ago and between the transmission's "quirks", the lack of power from the 3.5L V6 (you've got to rev the nuts off of it to get anything out of it, no torque at lower RPM), and the fugly looks I don't see how people can justify the $55,000 price tag. I bought an Impreza a month later and it's no powerhouse but I can drive down the interstate without downshifting and needing to run 4500 RPM or more.

The 3.5 should have never been put in the tacoma. What a fail. And the 2019 4runner has the 4.0 but instead of 6 gears only 5. The best combo is the tacoma with the 4.0 and 6 spd manual.

I test drove a ranger when they first came out, I really liked it. The power train was great for a midsize truck, and having the low end torque and 10 speed is great. I went with the 3rd gen Tacoma, but with manual. I think if Toyota put a better transmission in it, say a solid 8 speed, it would have paid huge dividends for them down the road especially with the increased competition. Also finding some more low end grunt out of the 3.5 would have been nice too. I guess that's what OVtune is for. Both nice little trucks though. But damn, I wish the Tacoma had a little 4.0 V8. That would be a dream.

@@MadMedeiros I'm not sure who statement you are reading, but maybe you should try reading mine again. The guy is giving his impression of his new vehicle, that's it. Just because you would not choose that vehicle doesn't mean you have to bash him or me. I'm not sure why you have a problem with that. He was nit picking, but he was nit picking about the ranger. He stated his reasons for trying another brand. He listed specific problems with his Toyota vehicles and by the way , they are not nit picky problems. It's not like it's a secret, those are known issues for those vehicles. The issue that I have always had with the Toyota Tacoma is the lack of head room. I am only 5' 9.5" and I hated the feeling of having my hair brushing against the roof unless I reclined the seat way back. My biggest wish for a Tacoma refresh would be more headroom. That is one thing the domestic manufacturers seem to be more mindful of.

I have a 3rd Gen Tacoma with some mods. I'm glad I opted for the manual transmission. I love the truck. I've had absolutely no problems with it. It's terrible that Toyota would sell auto Tacomas w/ transmission problems and at a way higher price than they should.

Tacoma Mafia is like OHIO State fans, no matter how bad the Tacoma sucks, comfort, rust, underpowered and poor economy, better not say anything bad about their icon, they’ll rain down hate on you! Tacoma’s have awesome resale value and after 2 that’s about all I can say good about them, mine were reliable both were manuals, but rust rust rust rust, back pain back pain back pain.

I was a Dodge Dakota guy since 1991 when I bought my first one, then I got a 1995 extended cab, then I bought 2011 in 2012. It was the 4 door and real nice. Then 60,000 miles later I traded my Dakota in. I bought a Toyota Tacoma 2wd, 4cyd, and 6-speed auto transmission. When driving on flat highways, over the humps and ridges the transmission was shifting back and forth. I got tired of it. I got more money than I bought it in a trade for a 2019 New Ford Ranger XL. 4WD I bought it from a dealer a ways off. So I financed it before I got it. It was advertised loaded. THEY LIED> It was a plain Jane. So I drove it for a month. Even though it was a plain jane, it handled great and the Turbo was a treat!! But I wanted more in a truck. So I got a NEW 2019 XLT 4x4 package and I got it 0% for 72 months. only $485 a month and I have the full 3-year warranty. It is Oxford White and the stainless package. I love it!!! I outrun every vehicle that wants to run me.

I’m on Ranger #5, currently driving a 17 year old one as a work/winter beater. I’ve never had a mechanical issue with any of them (I hardly ever have issues because I am fastidious about maintenance), hence the purchase of this old one. Nearly 2 years on, I’ve had zero issues, and 100% of things work. Every electrical accessory, the CD changer... you name it. Dunno about a 2.3L Turbo long term, but the Taco engine is woefully antiquated by every measurable statistic, and you pay for that 24/7/365.
