I test drove a ranger when they first came out, I really liked it. The power train was great for a midsize truck, and having the low end torque and 10 speed is great. I went with the 3rd gen Tacoma, but with manual. I think if Toyota put a better transmission in it, say a solid 8 speed, it would have paid huge dividends for them down the road especially with the increased competition. Also finding some more low end grunt out of the 3.5 would have been nice too. I guess that's what OVtune is for. Both nice little trucks though. But damn, I wish the Tacoma had a little 4.0 V8. I've had 7 other rangers that had slip-in liners and were a bad idea as were bug shields. all they did was cause damage to the paint and rub holes into the hood. some of the ideas for accessories for this truck I intend to add to mine such as the storage boxes and gate shock.

HyperXism 3.5 and auto is a terrible combo. Not enough torque. It’s a total dog and you have to whine the shit out of it. Manual is the way to go with the Tacoma. It really needs the bigger 4.0 engine.

The transmission is not the issue, it is the high gearing for economy. Many people are changing the gears to either 4.88's or 5.29's, especially after larger tires.

Manual is always the way to go. Even with different gearing in the rear end, the Tacoma manual would still be less money than an automatic. And they are not as clunky and rough as the older generations. But it’s not a sports car and wasn’t designed for quick, short throw shifts. Had a 94 3.0 Ranger, 200k miles on original clutch, slipped but still drove fine. 04 Ranger, 110k and auto pooped the bed. Won’t make that mistake again.. Smaller than a V8 should always be manual...

High gearing and aggressive upshifts make the Tacoma a dawg. Driving the thing is basically a fight with the transmission the whole time.

@@gregrowe1168 The comment wasn't that no one wanted the bike, it was that they COULDN'T TAKE the bike. But.... cyclingindustry.news/bicycle-theft-surpasses-2-million-a-year-in-the-usa/
