I bought the frontier, king cab. It does feel really "planted", as you said in the video. It also seems much quieter than my previous '12 Frontier. I put 195k trouble free miles on the '12, hoping for similar with the '22. I paid $34k, base model, 4x4, with the electronics pkg.

@@ia6980 A bunch of sensors I don't use! The little lights in the side view mirrors when someone is in my blind spot are helpful, other than that I don't really use them. The rear sensor I have to turn off every time I turn the truck on when I'm towing or I'll move two feet and the brakes slam on automatically, which is annoying as hell. Otherwise, great truck. One thing I really like when I'm on logging roads is the "manual" mode on the transmission. You can manually shift between any of the nine speeds and it'll stay there, nice for going down hill. In my area the Nissan is always more competitive on price than the Tacoma.

I bought a Frontier and love it. Honestly the Ranger would have been my second choice for the mid size I really like them . I also have 3 childs seats in my Frontier 1 rear facing and 2 booster seats enough room for us but to be fair I'm short so it works for me.

My dad had a 2000 Frontier he shipped to the Dominican Republic in 05. He had it there for about 15 years and beat the piss out of it. Constantly overloading it and mostly driven off road. I didn't think it was going to last as long as it did, especially the way he was driving it. I've owned 3 myself. 04, 12 and now an 18 which I plan on keeping for as long as possible. All awesome trucks. Best bang for your buck, hands down. The Nissan will outlive the Ford, no question.

I bought the Frontier 4x Pro, it's fully loaded, with that package you get heated leather seat and heated steering wheel, heated outside mirror, moon roof, 9inch clear sharp display with navigation system, 360 surrounding camera, 10 fender speakers with sub-woofer, and there's lot more.

@@markharrison7922 I get 17 to 19 or sometimes 20 in the city. it depends on the traffics, keep your RPM between 2 and 3 to save gas.

I got a 2022 pro4x frontier. It's a huge upgrade from what I had before, I've used it a bit already, hauling patio furniture, dump-runs, light stuff. It's great. I love it. Couldn't be happier with it. My only complaint so far is the selector for 4wheel drive is cheap af, super minor complaint I know haha.

2019 Ranger XLT 4X4 here. I replaced my rear shocks with $80 Bilsteins and it rides perfectly while I towed my Honda S2000 through the Tennessee mountains with two car seats in the back. Love the turbo charger!! Sport mode is so much faster than Drive, and it will run on 87-93 fuel. Just depends on the pocket book that week.

It's a Mazda designed engine that's been around for a while, originally in the Mazdaspeed3/6 and the cx9 as far back as 2008. Most of the kinks have been worked out as the mid 2010s ecoboost 4 cylinders had some cooling issues. That being said, I'd take a bigger v6 over a turbo 4 any day.

I had a 2018 frontier. Drove great and survived 2 car accidents I was even t-boned at 60 mph and I still managed to drive away after all was said in done I ended up buying a 2023 frontier and im very very happy with it. Huge improvement all around on the bed and cabin. Mine are sv's

That is pretty good milage. Not sure if I would get that good of milage living here in the mountains of Virginia. My 2.3 Big Bend auto is only getting 19.5-21 ... I was thinking of getting a Ranger or Tacoma until the opportunity came for me to pick up my current Bronco. The 2.3L is an awesome engine.

@@heydaddy6817Usually the naturally aspirated, especially when the Ranger has a turbo 4. A V6 will outlive any turbo 4. However now that the new Ranger will be offering the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 in the XLT and Lariat trims alongside the turbo 4, I want to see how that changes.

If you take off that stupid splash package, I bet the price will be the same. I would take the Frontier home because it looks so good, or I would just wait a year for the new Ranger.

Nissan wasn’t going for high performance towing wise they polled their customers and asked therm wat they wanted, most of them said we love the current truck, don’t make it bigger, don’t need more towing abilities cause we’d just get a bigger truck if we needed that, and update it interior wise and exterior wise and it needs better fuel economy all of which Nissan checked off in this update

Great video and honest reviews done with these tests! Here in the US, the NISSAN dealers are getting $3,000 over MSRP, and the current MSRP for a PRO 4 X is now around $47.000 plus! Until the supply chain issues are resolved and more inventory comes online, the prices remain high for both of these trucks here in America! And the FORD dealers are even more aggressive with charging way over MSRP! As much as I love both of these trucks I'm out of the market until I can once again buy one for less than MSRP!

Bought a '23 frontier SV crew with the long bed 4x4 and love it. Im 6'2 300lbs and it fits me comfortably and I can haul lumber if my guys need a fill in. I want to rave about the adaptive cruise control and outlet + leds in the bed. Its loaded! My biggest complaints are the stock sound system and for some reason the lean forward/back control is high enough where a bigger guy/gal will hit it with their leg/wallet everytime you get in and out. I thought I was losing my mind baving to re adjust my seat everytime I got back in my truck. Don't regret my purchase one bit and it's the first brand new truck I've ever bought. Right under 42k

Great payload test guys! The Frontier is a stout, solid little truck. As you'd showed from other tests, I'm wondering why Nissan set it up on the stiff side. The Ranger may have a little better off-roading characteristics with a softer suspension.

One thing Nissan got right on the Frontier is the Pro-4x getting Bilstein shocks. The Ranger FX4 shocks among Ranger owners are generally disliked due to that floaty nature. Many of us, myself included, swap at minimum the rear shocks to remedy this. I personally went to Fox 2.0's on all 4 corners and couldn't be happier with the ride. Its what the FX4 should have had, but I guess that's why Ford released the Tremor.

I like the frontend of the Ranger. It is less busy and the sloping hood allows you to see the road closer to the truck. Good video showing the car seat and front and rear seating.

Very good comparison on both trucks. For me I would go for the frontier. Key features cold weather package as standard equipment, very comfortable ride and seats for us 50 and up , and NO stop/start system on it.

One thing I would like to see in future videos is a graphic on the screen with the stats from the vehicles being tested. Don't forget that from a dead stop...it matters not how much Horsepower an engine makes....what matters from the take off is the Torque output. Horsepower gets you more speed at higher rpms...but torque is what gets the vehicle moving from a dead stop. The more the torque generated by the engine....the more Gs you will feel when you stomp on the gas pedal

Frontier Pro 4x for me all day. Seems to be overall the best "swiss army knife" in the mid-size truck category. Excellent offroading, solid payload capacity and towing, handles nicely on-road as well. Overall was a win for me (and why a brand new 2022 Pro 4x is sitting in my garage right now!)

I bought the 22 frontier Pro X with luxury package every option except 4x4. But it has the off-road tires and suspension obviously. It’s equivalent to the Tacoma TRD off-road 4x2. Which I have had 2 of those and with the new design of the frontier I figured I would give it a shot. I really appreciate Japanese manufacturing. Only gripe is it doesn’t have the Rear diff locks like the 4x2 TRD off-road. Other than I love it and it’s the most powerful in its class has good pep, which I feel like titans and frontiers have always had.

I own an older 2018 Frontier and love it! I've also owned two much older Ford Rangers back in the 80's. I know the Nissan has been remodeled and that the Ranger is too and that they're both really different from the trucks I own or have owned. At the end of the day I think I would pick the Nissan. Sadly that's because I think the Nissan is more inclined to last and hold up better mechanically over the Ford. My wife and I quit buying the American brand cars back in the 90's because of bad luck with domestic brands (mostly Fords). Prior to that I was a strict buy American made guy. However, I also tend to own my cars well past the pay off date so really want longevity in my vehicles! That has translated to Honda for passenger cars and Nissan for trucks. We have found them to be a great value!

Great review guys! I test drove only these two trucks before buying the 2022 Ranger Lariat FX4. The frontier has a nicer interior but the Ranger is just more capable (we have a small travel trailer). The seats in the Ranger are far more comfortable as well...especially the back seats.

Mike - soliciting an opinion. I really like the Lariat, but they are un-obtainable. All tell me they cannot be found and if I want one I can order from the factory and if lucky, I may get it in 4-6 months. The Frontier is gettable. They are actually on the lot. My car got totaled when I got t-boned. So need something. You chose the Lariat. Could you have lived with the Frontier? I don't expect to have back-seat passengers often. Kids are grown and gone. Don't do off-roading. I understand the Frontier can be had with a premium package that seems fairly well loaded. I'd welcome your opinion because you have no skin in the game.

I love our 2020 ranger. Great mpg, the motor doesn't rev much above 2,000 rpms, and 310lbs/tq tows great with the 3.73gears and 10 speed.

I was in this situation 2 months ago. After test driving both multiple times, I feel the powertrain is smoother in the Frontier, but I was much more comfortable in the Ranger, so bought the Tremor. Haven't regretted it yet, except for the shudder issue on take off. Didn't know it was a thing until after I bought it. :-/

I’m not in that stage of my life where I need to worry about that but many buyers are. Personally I would buy a Ranger Supercab. I don’t need the crew cab and would rather have the extra bed length. I’d also get my Ranger in either the STX or XLT trim to bring the price down a few grand.

If I were in the market for a mid-size, this race is tight. I'd take whichever one the dealer would work with me best on, but these two and the Taco make for a strong segment. I am looking forward to the new Ford Ranger. Hopefully there will be a longer wheelbase option to accommodate the four doors and a 6-6.5 foot bed. Things I prefer are locking dif on lower packages, adaptive cruise, and long bed with four full doors, and decent headlights.

I bought a 2021 Ranger. It was down to the Ranger or the Tacoma. On the test drive, both kids fit in the rear seat with forward facing car seats. In the Tacoma my son was behind the drive seat and had his knees in his chest. I'm 6'4" and was surprised when I checked the Ranger out in the showroom and could easily fit behind myself on the passenger side and barely had my knees in the seat in the rear driver side seat. At this time the new Frontier was not out, but I had discounted the old Frontier, Colorado, and Gladiator from research and watching youtube videos, yes this and other channels. Next just take into account how they drive and the Ranger blew the Tacoma away. Ford really knocked it out of the park in the mid-size market. Load and towing capacity and offroad capability for the price is phenomenal. The fuel economy is also really nice. I'm generally 21 to 23 mpg on my tanks.

XLT with 302a gets powered seats as well. Agree stock tremor suspension is great. All others suck. 🤣 ... You don't even need to go 2.0s.. just get Bilstein or Eibach dampers on all 4 corners for 300$ and you will get 90% of any 2.0 upgrade for much less money. The ranger is still the best mid size truck out there. The aftermarket is great. I wish we could get a 6g ranger interior with the 5g exterior.

It'd be a tough decision for me. I really like both trucks. I traded in a 2019 Frontier Pro-4x for a 2021 Ranger Lariat FX-4. The new Frontier hadn't come out yet and the Ford stealership was willing to give me what I paid for my Frontier so it was a deal. Had the new Frontier been out I would've given it very serious consideration. Neither truck has left me stranded and I'm sure I'd be happy with either one.

Good review, thanks for sharing. When I bought my 2019 Ranger XLT FX4 2-door, the Frontier was still the (very) old model, I didn't even consider it. My Ranger has over 50k miles now, and I am very happy with it. It's driven long distances on road and quite a bit off-road, both for work and play (I work in agriculture). Does it ride like a truck? Sure it does, but that's what I need. In my opinion, it corners and tracks very well, however. Fuel eficiency is decent, better than all the competitors. Payload and towing capacity are important for me, too, and it beats the competition in both. At 6'1", I sit very comfortable, even on long hauls. My Ranger has only needed regular standard maintenance (oil change & tire rotation every 5000 miles), no repairs needed so far. It's a reliable, tough little truck.

I've had 1/2 ton trucks and 3/4 ton trucks but if I were shopping today for a midsize truck I think the fuel economy would be a major factor for downsizing. Surprised with the cost of gas there was little to no mention of fuel economy comparisons. I am also quite surprised at the cost of these midsize trucks. Less then 5 years ago I drove home a new Ram 2500 Hemi Big Horn with the offroad package and sport package for $44K USD. Lots of changes in truck prices over the last 5 years.

yea but then they're gonna stick the giant vertical iPad touch screen on the dash board which takes away most of hard physical buttons and thats probably too much for me especially in the midsize truck segment. Most people are doing that and i kinda don't like that trend.

Frontier all day, for its reliability, modern features and more confident driving dynamics. Also, not everyone needs max carrying capacity and interior space. Larger isn't automatically better, it depends on your personal needs. I am single and rarely have more than 1 other person in the vehicle with me. I also don't tow and 1100 or 1200 payload is more than I'll ever need for DIY projects and camping/traveling. The Frontier is just a better, more modern total package, in my opinion.

Nissan is more truck like, firm controls no overly sensitive power steering or braking. performance hearkening to the Hard body days. Very happy with mine.

I have yet to drive the Frontier, but I like its styling! I loved the Ranger when I test drove one and the seats are great too. The thing that really kills the Frontier for me is the no telescoping steering wheel and the new transmission. I like to lean back when I drive and I doubt ill be able to without the wheel moving back. I really hope the transmission does well longevity wise, but I've had Jatco transmissions before and I've never had a good experience with them. Since both are out of my price range due to mark ups in my area, I will be watching the reviews come in on the Frontier from owners and see how it does!

Nice real world comparison. Hopefully you guys took these on your off-road course for a future comparison video. I’m a Ranger owner and still happy with the decision. I bought before the new Nissan came out but I don’t think I’d change my pick. I test drove the other midsize trucks before I bought and decided on the Ranger. Like you noted, and pretty much every other automotive journalist has as well, the ride is floaty and kind of rocks side to side. Ford should be ashamed of the shocks they installed on the FX4 Rangers. Thankfully this is easily rectified by a set of Bilstein or Eibach shocks for not a ton of money. No a person shouldn’t have to change shocks on a new truck but it in the mail be the truck still rides and handles great and is way more settled.

I believe we have gotten so used to so called fake trucks being car based we think all of them should be what’s called “composed”. I love the rig and have no complaints. Wonder what will go first, your frame rotting out? Maybe the crappy transmission will drop? Perhaps the ball joints will prematurely wear out? How about a leaky exhaust manifold? Good comparison but Nissan is all new against an old platform and ford is ahead in all things a truck is made for. Towing capacity, payload capacity, and roomier. Id go ranger and next year in this market no one will choose the frontier over the all new ranger.

I bought a Frontier because I loved the style and the options. A big factor is that there was no Ranger available. But the biggest point is that I trust the V6 ahead of the turbo for the long run. The seats are very confortables and it rides nice on the road. If you find the truck crampy, maybe you should look for a F150.

I have a 2021 Ranger XLT FX4. The suspension is pretty soft with the FX4 package. A lot of people replace the rear shocks with Eibach, Bilstein, or Fox and takes the wallowing ride out of it. Other than replacing the rear shocks, I love the power and mpgs of the ranger.

We have a '21 Ranger, and I would agree w/the "floatiness" comment. This seems to be due to the greatly inadequate shocks that Ford uses in the Ranger. Replacing the rear shocks with something decent makes a huge and better difference in handling. I would say that anyone considering the purchase of a Ranger should just plan on spending an extra few hundred bucks on a set of respectable shocks. Installation is fairly easy, and can be done without lifting the vehicle.

From South Africa. I drive a Ranger 2.2 TDCI single cab long wheel base, with a six speed manual gearbox with 147 hp and tons of torque. We don't have any petrol models, only 3 diesels. I won't swop my Ranger for anything, but I am prejudiced. I love my Fords. Our other engine options are a 3.2l 5 cylinder turbodiesel and a 2l bi-turbo diesel. We also have two autobox options, a six speed and the ten speed.

Payload difference is in the sunroof, premium audio system with 2 amps and a subwoofer, bigger engine, and bed clamp rails lights and power hookup. Nissan has more features and for a lower price.

Great video. One thing on suspension the stock suspension on all trims of the ranger minus the Tremor is garbage. Good thing both Bilstein and eibach makes for under 300$ dampers that replace all 4 corners and allows for some lift which transforms the ride.

After my last truck I'll never own a Ford again. Too many issues and recalls and their so-called fixes for recall items still left one of my major complaints unresolved. The doors would freeze shut in the winter due to water getting into the locking mechanism and if you got them to open then you couldn't get them to shut. They added so-called shields and then lubricated everything inside but still had to deal with this during the winter months.

Great Review/ Comparison I just hit 2500 miles in my New Toyota Tacoma TRD off road. It's a Dog off the line until about 27+ mph, having said that I'm enjoying most of the Tacoma‘s features. I would take either one of these trucks over a Tacoma. Look, I know it's reliable but I couldn't live with one after test driving multiple years since 2016. The transmission is absolute garbage on the interstate, constantly hunting for gears on even the slightest of grades.

Im kinda bummed about my tacoma for interstate driving. Any speed limit above 65 mph kills my gas. I found that small highways and dirt roads gave me the best mpg. Kinda miss my old nissan in this respect

I ordered the 22 ranger in the lowest trim and added every feature I wanted, came out cheaper that way and I absolutely love it. That said I have to admit I like the styling on the frontier better for everything except the wheels/tires.

Great video. Love that you don't do drama and act like a small rock path is going to cause death. Some other channels are drama queens. It would be cool if you did the opposite video now. Compare some extended cabs. Some folks have families, some have no friends. I am considering either a ZR2 extended cab or a Ranger FX4 extended cab. Very litte content on extended cabs, rear seat deletes, etc.

Ultimately it comes down to what you want to do with your truck though. The argument that you can get a base full size is valid if all you want is hauling ability. If you need to drive into the city or want to go off-roading more, then you're looking at the mid sizers.

The Frontier looks fantastic, and I like that I could have a full cab and full size bed. I just don’t trust those transmissions I personally own a 2019 Ranger and 50k miles on it, it’s a fantastic truck. 23-24mpg, have towed 5000lbs without issue and have put 1600lbs in the bed many times. Honestly my biggest complaint is there is no dials for volume/temp control. It’s a terrible design choice.

I love my 2019 Ranger. However, as dumb as it sounds, the number one reason I have thought of replacing it is to get one with much better temperature controls. I drive on single lane, twisty highways daily in all sorts of weather and it is such a distraction having to push the screen buttons or the super small dash ones. I cannot believe the design went into production really. It seems like it is meant to be used on the auto setting but that is not always practical.

Personally I would go with the Ranger, mainly because I have a 99 Ranger XL 4x4 with the 3.Slow and the 5 speed manual. Can't go wrong with a 2.3 I4 either. I do have my niece and nephew to drive around on occasion, and my brother goes sometimes.

good comparison, these 2 are very closely matched. It really comes down to how you are going to use the truck. Generally turbos dont have a long life so that will be something to do/deal with on the ranger but otherwise should be solid as well.

The 2.3 eco boost is an old engine and has a lot of life in it. And turbos like all technology have certainly progressed since the 80s, unlike people’s opinions on them.
