World Chess Champion Ding Liren returns for the 86th edition of the Tata Steel Masters, a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 13-28 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. gosh thats such an accurate way of portraying it. an immortal game is truly immortal when one rook crashing into the pawn rank sets up a chain of events which cannot be stopped even if black plays to perfection. even the top engines never saw such a move despite being able to calculate 20 moves deep, thats how we say chess can never be a "solved" game.
@ClarkPotter
@ClarkPotter 3 ай бұрын
@spiritchaser8394 Never? It might be weakly solved in our lifetime with conventional computing, or further with quantum computing when you can try all possibilities in parallel simultaneously. We might even be close already to finding forced sequences from the static start position that either player cannot do better than.
@thriquinox

@@ClarkPotter the thing is, even if we are able to calculate all of the position, it would still be hard to judge correctly whether the position is winning or losing.

My favorite thing about this game, Houdini 1.5a looking 20 moves deep doesn't see the win after Rxf7. Only after way more thought does it figure out that it's crushing. IIRC some other more powerful engines also missed some of Yi's moves in this.

Thank you for the nice review of the game! It's quite funny how the human brain can calculate such positions. I managed to find c4 in like 10 seconds - with the clear idea that it cuts off the king, but obviously it was a cool coincidence as I didn't calculate for more than 3 moves deep. When you play rapid chess (but not blitz), this is your main flow of thoughts: follow patterns or tricks, and hope for the best! One thing that was not mentioned - kudos to Lazaro for such a fierce defence, he played it to the end, trying to pose one problem after another.

After Rg8 and Bb6+, when the king moves you don’t go after the queen. This game was never about material. Rather continue with Rf1+. If the king moves to the g-file it’s an easy checkmate and if it goes back then sacrifice the other bishop with Qh3. Qxb6 cannot stop a mate against the queenside pawns on c4 after a few moves

qxg6 is also forced mate i'm pretty sure, qd3, qc3, rd1, qb3, rf1, qf7, mate in 5. Seems like a better line, king is checked every move until checkmate no matter which escape he tries to take.

That's what I thought, I'd just go for the queen and ignore the checkmate sequence but that's probably why I'm sitting at 900

I always thought that the Sicilian variation 6 Be2 is as good and agressive as 6 Bc4 or 6 Bg5. Karpov used to play 6 Be2 a lot in his youth.
