Back in the day, I studied this opening again and again, waiting for the day it finally came up in a tournament... And then one day it did. I was playing a guy 300 points above me. I blew off the first pawn, of course, and then the second. Then sacrificed one rook, and then another rook. My opponent, who was normally one of those cool as a cucumber guys, got more and more sweaty and red faced until finally he broke. Just about the sweetest victory ever.

At 6:08 another variation would be Nh5 forcing the king to go back to f2 then Nc2 with a discovered check from the bishop forcing the king again to e2. Lastly, Nf4 checkmate.

6:45 after the king moves to h4, instead of knight to d7, you could play knight to f8, with a discovery from the queen, and then after king h5, you checkmate your opponent with f6, which I found funnier, because giving checkmate with a pawn is always fun
@lightningprowess60316 жыл бұрын
are you drunk?
@elieweiss10496 жыл бұрын
At six minutes and 30 seconds: another checkmate could be queen to d 6, putting king in check and bishops on c 5 and f 5 covering spaces. King has one place to move: h 4. Then move queen down to d 4. Checkmate

Playing black is hard as a result of the E4 opening move. Black is always having to react to white's moves until a move is made that lacks tempo. To overcome this Magnus creates game winning positions by sacrificing his pieces. Which forces his opponent to do likewise to prevent it. Surely it goes without saying this is an exceptional example of Magnus' greatness.
@berndgrill13864 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not: some years ago, a chess club friend of mine won two tournament games with exactly this variation within one week. It's just amazing to see how many players can't resist the temptation to take on f7 with check, when White is already close to lost. The first of the two games went pretty much the same way as the one discussed here. By the way, White should counter 3... Bg4 with 4. Bb5+!. If 4... c6, then just take on c6 with the pawn. If instead Black prefers 4... Ld7, then 5. Le2 leads to a misplaced bishop on d7. If 4... Sbd7, then 5. f3 Lf5 6. Sc3! is a strong option for White. This was confirmed in another game by one of my clubmates, who smashed his opponent in around 20 moves. Due to the stunning two victories before, we were well aware of the dangers and looked for something more practical for White - and found this approach. We were pleased to find out that John Shaw later recommended this exact way of playing against this so-called Portuguese Variation in his 1. e4 repertoire book! P.S.: That dog is the secret star of this channel! Excellent work by agadmator though, keep it going!

At 6:08, can't you also force checkmate in 3 moves with . . . N-g5 K-f2, N-c2 K-e2 , N-f4 , or lose the queen if you use it to block the bishop.

I haven't played this exact line of the Scandinavian in over 20 years but, when I did, it was always against one guy, who would almost always choose this opening with black, and I don't recall ever beating him; in fact, I'm pretty sure I lost 2 or 3 games. I haven't looked into it since because it's a rare line these days but, I admit, just out of curiosity, I'd love to take some time to learn the best ways to counter it. If there were a few explanatory videos, I'd definitely check them out.
@Husnan2756 жыл бұрын
Hey agadmator, I *believe* I found another solution to your mate puzzle around 6min12 in the video : Knight H5 check -> King has to go to F2 -> Knight C2 check (discover from the Bishop on C5) -> King has to go to E2 (blocking with the Queen on D4 doesnt do anything, you just grab the Queen with the Bishop) -> Knight F4 checkmate. Did I miss something?

Suri lost because he focused on grabbing pawns instead of developing all his pieces. Look at the board when the video finished. He has 1 piece that too a bishop on f3 & 6 pieces sitting on the 1st rank undeveloped & look at Carlsen's pieces that too playing with black. ALWAYS go for rapid development instead of getting too materialistic. Mikhail Tal was called "The magician from Riga" for a reason. If i wasn't told that the player with the black pieces was Magnus, my 1st guess would have been Mikhail Tal !

he focused his attention on keeping his pawns, forgetting his lack of development (look at his king side..), now if we apply the rule "if you loose the lead, you loose the game", running like a miserable after pawns deserves a lesson..
@zachsoto76216 жыл бұрын
exf7+ was the mistake, white is fine after f3. The rook sac is a very common idea in this line, if Carlsen missed it that would be hilarious. If you're interested in the gambit, a great book on it is "Smerdon's Scandinavian" by David Smerdon.
