The 8th Annual Dos Hermanas Chess Tournament held from May 20th to June 2nd, 1996 was a category XIX event. Ten of the world's best players, including the World Champion, competed in a round robin format. The participants were (in order of ELO): Garry Kasparov (2775), Vladimir Kramnik (2775), Vassily Ivanchuk (2735), Gata Kamsky (2735), Vishwanathan Anand (2725), Veselin Topalov (2700), Boris Gelfand (2700), Alexei Shirov (2690), Judit Polgar (2675), and local Spanish favorite Miguel Illescas-Cordoba (2635). Kramnik and Topalov took first as co-champions, each with 6/9, edging out Kasparov and Anand by half a point.

If i remember correctly, there were two main theories as to why this happened. First, Kramnik was most likely mentally exhausted from playing against Deep Fritz due to the necessary intense calculations required. (Machines punish the slightest tactical inaccuracies.) Second, this is a very unusual mating pattern and it's well-known that GMs rely on pattern recognition to save on calculation time. This pattern just wasn't on Kramnik's mind.

one thing i like to think about is that 50 or more years from now, a chess youtuber is going to talk about players like carlsen, kramnik, nakamura, MVL, and aronian the same way we talk about players like fischer, petrosion, tal, morphy , capablanca, and so forth. I find it amazing that we live in a generation where we get to experience games between these legends and 50-100 years from now they’ll still be appreciated like they should. Kramnik is an amazing player and will 100% be one of the most important influences for the future chess generation.

I am afraid not. Its just almost impossible to have the same will in a candidates as the young generation who really wants to fight for THE title - a title he has had many years. This is a mental thing - and physical its harder and harder to keep such a concentration over many hours for many games in a few weeks - maybe even Carlsen is already feeling that - appart from the impact it has on you when you don't know anything else than beeing chased for such a long time. As Big Boris said: "None of my years were more unlucky than the three I was world chess champion." Well of course during cold war it was much much more pressure and publicity than we know it now (and thats good), but still...

15:07 I couldn't find the checkmate in 4, because I assumed after Bxd3+ white just captures with the queen instead of the rook. I fail to see how the queen on d1 helps with anything, whereas from d3 it guards the pawn on c4 so the continuation discussed in the video is not possible. You need to search well to find a non boring Kramnik game, this was one of the good ones. The checkmate with the bishop check... it's not that mate combos don't start with checks, they do, but who would give up this pin? the N also blocks an escape route, it's pinned, your bishop can be used in some other part of your combo, it's counter-intuitive to give it up so early. Unless, there is a checkmate there... I think the checkmate is not that hard to find, it's just not something most people would straight up consider. And under pressure or tiredness he might have missed it, despite him being the world champion of classical chess. And when Kramnik started his attack in this game, there was also a hint of a draw there, at least a possibility. Kasparov said no to the draw and defended against it, this was stupid - I mean, sure, defend, but let Kramnik draw a winning position, give him that chance. Kramnik would take the draw no matter what.
