Tal has the possibility for a beautiful knight sacrafice in this game, but he didn't go for it. Declining health is probably the reason. At this point he was very sick, i'm impressed he could even play chess games. Dont't forget that this guy crushed Bobby Fischer 4 times. Only losing 2 matches against him. Real legend.

I always thought it was the one thing lacking in your videos - it really helps in explaining ideas and variations without the need to actually move all the pieces, but is clearer than merely talking about the ideas without anything visual. I think you just need to practise at it, Jerry from Chess-Network uses it very well!

the old Anand, which is the young Anand, was great, and new Anand, who is the old Anand, is suspicious -Ben finegold, 2015
@zaksmith1035
@zaksmith1035 6 жыл бұрын
Because Anand was my favorite current player for a long time( before the rise of Carlsen), I thought long and hard about how and why his chess style changed so drastically, and for the worse I might add. It was finally revealed to me in a quote that some of my thoughts were correct. Anand said at one time that he thought his job as World Champion was NEVER TO LOSE A SINGLE GAME. (This is a paraphrase, and it may be true that he said "To lose as few games as possible" or "I felt that as World Champion I should not be losing games"). If you realize that this was his idea of what "Chess World Champion" was, you can see how his style changed from trying to win to trying not to lose, and how that affected not only his results but also our level of entertainment as spectators. At the time I thought it was because he was trying desperately to hold to his throne, but I realize it was his attempt to represent chess. Either way, it's sad that he adopted such a faulty view of what a World Champion is because he inadvertently cheated himself and the world out of the wonderful games he was capable of playing in his prime. After he lost the WC you can see how his style became much more dynamic again, but alas, we lost many years of games that he is not capable of producing with the same consistency today as he was then.

13:24 Mikhail Tal resigned after Rxd3, and it took me several months to figure out the threats Anand had in the position. I wanted to share some lines that I found very beautiful out of this game, after Rxd3: 1. If white plays Rook anywhere on the first rank, as it was attacked by the knight on e3, then Qxf2+ Kh1 (only move) and Qg2# (The idea behind Ne3+ and Qc2) 2. If you try getting your queen in to the defense, with let's say Qb2, then black wouldn't exchange queens, rather play Qc6, threatening Qg2#, and how do you defend it? Blocking with f3 results in Nxf1. Now if Kxf1, then Qh1+ if Ke2 (only move) then Qf3+, if Kf1 then Rd1# or if Ke1 then Qd1# There may be more lines that I might have not considered, but, here, even with the best possible defense, it's probably mate in 5. A great feat accomplished by the young Vishy Anand. Bringing The Great Mikhail Tal to checkmate is just spectacular. I do like Tal's aggressive style of play, but, Anand has the upper hand.

Hi Agadmator, and thank you for sharing this game. To see that Vishy won against the GOAT of chess is unbelievable! Maybe it had to do with the Magician playing with one piece too many ;) Thanks again and keep posting these videos, I enjoy every one of them.

One of your strengths as a commentator, I think, is showing why an obvious move was not made, due to the non-obvious follow-up moves. Don't be surprised if some fans start to do a fun impression of you with , "So, yeah." ;) 13:58

It is very interesting because if I am not mistaken, the chess club where Vishwanathan Anand sharpened his skills in Chennai ( formerly Madras) was the " Mikhail Tal Chess club". Although I am from India and an avid fan of Anand, it is very sad to see Mikhail Tal lose. He is the most flamboyant player that this great game has ever seen. One person who caused absolute mayhem on the chess board and made all those pieces come to life. There can only be one Mikhail Tal

He died 2 years after this tournament. Tal withdrew from the tournament after the first half for medical treatment. It's hard to maintain such high standards of play until death. Do you think your expectations of another human being were a little high?
