The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

Caruana isn't a large man to be fair. And didn't Alireza hit a growth spurt recently? When they were touring the play room, Hikaru walked in--not the tallest man either-- looked around, followed moments later by Alireza. When he walked in, head just beneath the door frame, he dwarfed everyone. lol

Feels like Alireza has been playing too aggressive, playing too many weird moves to try to confuse his opponents but they end up defending perfectly against him and put him in a bad position. To be fair, it's this aggression that the old players like Nepo is missing, which makes Magnus hesitant to want to face them again. But Alireza does not seem to have the skill to justify his aggression just yet.

People talk about how the reason Fabi was a member of the 2800 club was because he was always very prepared. The fact that he beat Hikaru in that very tricky game, and Alireza in a game Alireza himself prepared shows you how much of a beast you have to be to get that far ahead in rating.

Interestingly though in both cases it was him just completely outplaying his opponent in the middle game. @@sid3645 I agree that he almost certainly felt he was better but couldn’t calculate everything given clock. Firouzja’s exchange sac brings to mind a comment made by Kasparov when faced with an unexpected sac... if your opponent sacs but you have played soundly up until then, then (no matter how tricky the tactics) there must be a refutation in the position... your job is to find it. That’s exactly what Fabi did with the seemingly illogical f5! tallowing white to slip out of the skewer by offer a Queen trade, which rescues the rook no matter what Firouzja replies. Fabi’s counterattack is equally sublime. Bravo! Firouzja’s prep tho sharp seems to have holes in it; why else would he, a well-known speed demon, be burning thru so much time in his chosen opening???

nepo is such a wildcard, he can win AND lose anytime, even though he is far ahead. fabi is more stable, but unless someone fires some rockets he won't be caught either. hikaru and ricsi have slight chance to catch them, at least they both play a chess that can bring surprise points. alireza and ding are disappointments for sure, even though ding came out of form, barely qualifying instead of karjakin, and alireza already went beyond expectations at age 19 by qualifying (and ofc by joining the 2800 club too).

Too early to call that. Let's say Nepo lost one game. Even at the current stage, that would put four players within one point of the top spot. 1.5 down with over half the games to be played is still very much in striking range for Nakamura and Rapport.

Well he is good enough. If there was no Carlsen, Fabi would probably be the one dominating the stage. He has been consistently performing great at candidates, and we all saw the 2019 wc. His peak rating of 2844 is also just behind Kasparov, way above everybody else.

regarding the photo, perhaps the relative confidence of the two players can be seen in the fact that alireza does not remove his suit jacket. Fabi looks like he is about to get to work and alireza looks more like a schoolboy still. understandably, as he is basically still a schoolboy

I was surprised by the apparent difference in size in the picture, and looked them both up - both are 5' 6" so it must be some trick of the camera angle or how they are sitting. Incidentally, they both became GM at 14 years of age - people tend to forget Caruana was a pridugy as well.

Alireza needs to go back to the drawing board as for Nepo or Caruana vs Carlsen it would not be very exciting , it would take a prime Kasparov with razor sharp opening knowledge and insane home preparation to take down Carlsen , there are levels to this and he is just above and beyond 💯
