I found one earlier this week in my spot. A lot more weathering, more grey, and less definition. It weighs about 15-20 lbs. They look like moon rocks. I set the one I found up on the bank too. I don't know why, I just did. I'm going to go back tomorrow and snap a couple of pics. Time and WIFE permitting of course.

@@zanna9857 will do this is an amazing and interesting channel, this and Michigan rocks has helped me find my interest in finding, the amazing gems and fossils of the Michigan lake area. I myself have even found a beautiful reddish browned lined stromatolite that looks newer in age, and seeing this made me think of the different possiblities
@MrBendylaw3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest carrying some paracord in your rockhounding kit and building a travois on the spot to haul stuff like that. That way, you're only lifting a fraction of the weight vertically, easier on the back for sure. The rivers you hunt are sure to have some 12 or 15 foot deadwood saplings laying around; it's an easy, quick build and you don't have to lug anything in but a few ounces of paracord and a small saw or knife.

Ok, you're more of a man than I am. I don't know if you're crazier, just stronger. I'm impressed. A stromatolite that we have here in Michigan is Kona Dolomite. It's mined in Marquette and is also really colorful. They use it as rip rap in their ditches, but I like to cut it up and make stuff out of it.

Got an idea on how to transfer heavy “things” out of the woods or wherever. Buy a cheap plastic toboggan with a long rope to pull with. I’ve used this to haul wood, rocks, large brain coral, and just moving rock and topsoil around the yard. The toboggan will slide over almost anything no matter how heavy the object you are hauling.

Awesome find and even more awesome research! Universities are a wealth of information any one can access. I have a "mystery" rock too. I have posted it on a group site and been doing research on it. I have been told it is the top of a Crinoid. I am not convinced because around here we find small Crinoid stems and this thing is huge compared to those. It measures 7 inches across and 3 inches thick and looks like a star. Mystery will be solved when I get it to the University 2 1/2 hours away from me. Love the rock and will never part with it, my granddaughter found it when I was hunting for rounded sandstones.

If you happen to find anyone or a company who will cut it open for you, please record the entire experience. My only worry is that an industrial, large saw would not leave a clean cut behind. You would then need an electric sander (or take forever going the manual route) with (just a guess) 5 or 6 different grits to get it flat, smooth, and w/o any markings/striations left behind from the saw. And if it is worth it, a large, brass stand to display both halves. Great find, great research done, and great googly-moogly, that's a sample!

Very cool. I agree that those patterns don’t look like coral, and sounds like you got a good id. I can attest to the fact that lifting and carrying heavy rocks (and cases of soda pop and bags of concrete) over the years have left me with a lower vertebrae out of alignment, pinched nerve and almost constant back pain. So consider a back pack for larger pieces like this or borrow an atv if possible. People kept warning me I would “hurt my back” but didn’t say more than that. So I ignored it. I’d imagine a ruptured disk is no fun either. 🤓
