I watched the show with my girl , and we reacted in a way that was opposite to the first episode. I shared your sentiments with the other MCU KZbinrs who didn't really like the first episode, but she adored it and caught every single nod and reference before me. The point of episode 1 was for "Agatha" to cosplay as a cop to confuse the audience. Her sounding cringy or awkward as a detective is intentional because she was hexed. It’s refreshing to have stories told from a woman’s perspective.

Love all the points you make as always and appreciate you not hating on Agatha while praising The Penguin and not comparing the 2. I think the acting in ep. 1 was purposeful and it was animated and getting worse as the episode went on because she was being broken out of the spell and it was weakening so the “show” she was stuck in was progressively getting worse. Katherine Hahn put like 3 layers of acting into that ep and it was honestly amazing to watch. Can’t wait for more from this corner of the MCU!

Witches ✅️ Camp Horror ✅️ That's all I need lol sprinkle in Scarlet Witch references galore and Billy (?) and it's a dream come true. I love how this series starts off as a prestige crime drama just like Scarlet Witch (2015) when her and Agatha walk the witches' road. Lillia is goals. It's where I want to be in my crone age ✨️🔮✨️ Absolutely love the theory of Rio being Victor's mom! What a twist that would be!!

Personal theory about the teen is that it is billy maximof, the same from wandavision, and that him and his brother where grabbed from wandas hex reality right be it closed by possibly mephisto, now billy is being used to manipulate agatha to do the witches road where if you finish it you get whatever you want, and i think he will wish for him mum wanda to come back as well as the darkhold for mephisto

I love how in the intro you tried to explain that Marvel comics aren’t MCU movies phases 1-3 genre/tone . Like you got squirrel girl 🐿️ but you also got ghost rider 💀, and Captain America 🇺🇸… my point being every comic book is not for everyone, and a lot of people want their niche adapted and when they don’t get it they behave like little kids on social media, when it is totally ok to not like the same things, let other people enjoy their thing

I love both shows differently. Agatha is fun mystery, and Penguin is Suspenseful Drama. I really liked episode one for what it was, a conclusion of the Westview storyline. I guarantee we will not see Westview again, my prediction is that Mrs Hart will die in this show and she is the only character tying us back to that town now. I felt Ep1 had me wondering why is everyone still in a hex and the reveal was that everyone was playing along gives the episode amazing rewatchability! Going back and seeing everyone’s interactions, especially Herb, Dotty, and Rio, you can imagine them actually playing along with her fantasy. 😊 it’s awesome.

When the show first started it said something like "Based on Sokovian show Wandavision" something along those lines. That made me realize she was playing a character in a show. So many people missed that. That's why she was so animated compared to everyone else. I loved that touch.

I loved both eps. Always appreciate your opinions and respectful, constructive criticism. I expect this won't be for a lot of people, and I hope it sticks to its guns and keeps with this energy its conveying. If the story is good and interesting enough for the folks that don't have that theater kid vibe and enjoyment it will keep its audience and land a really good ending. I'm hoping that the characters were speculating about are spun well, with however they end up. So far i'm very optimistic and excited to see how it goes. As a "witchy" gay, for this time of year I couldn't ask for a better show. Bringing my love for spooky, campy, and some of my fave marvel stuff and actors together is exactly how I want to kick off the dark months!

I was put off a little with Episode 1’s choices to lean into an over-the-top portrayal of a detective show. Once Agatha pulled out of it, I felt the show got much better. I fully understand what they were trying to do, but the execution was a little too off for me. Episode 2 was a much more enjoyable episode, and while I agree we haven’t gotten time to connect with the coven, I’m glad we didn’t spend four episodes developing four members of the coven. I’m sure we’re going to get to know then them on the Road and be more fully invested in them by the end!

Interesting. I checked out of Marvel series after Hawkeye. Because I was churning Disney+ and because the reviews for Moon Knight told me it was a meh show, so when I signed the channel again I never saw neither that one nor any other Marvel show after that, because none of them was much praised. I saw a few of the films, but not all. I saw these first 2 episodes. To me, it felt like Wandavision. Like: exactly the same. I see no difference. So far, it's ok, and, so far, promising, because it feels like the writing is ok. I've been really burned by Star Wars content, and (again, so far) this (Agatha) doesn't feel like that (Acolyte). Do you think Teen could be Agatha’s son? I think that Agatha herself put a spell on him to not reveal personal information about himself so other witches, including Agatha, could not find him. The hair inside her pendant and the scenes where she looks at an empty kid’s room backs this up very well.

i completely agree with your opinion on episode 1. Compared to the hex trap that Wanda was in during Wandavision, in which I loved the tropes and mystery of it, with Agatha's true crime stint I wasn't feeling the overly cringy direction it took. Maybe because it wasn't a mystery at all this time, but i didn't feel as if the show even started until Agatha was free of the spell

I’m still in the middle of reviewing your video, but before I go any further, I want to start off with this, I enjoy you doing the review of the show and the fact that it is not necessarily your cup of tea will make the review interesting for me because you’re coming from an outsiders for a view. My taste in the greater comic book genre no matter which company is varied you never know from one moment to the next what I’m gonna like it just has to kind of click with me. So there’s a good chunk of the MCU that I like and then some that I find was OK so when there’s stuff that’s a little bit out of the ordinary a little bit more niche I tend to gravitate to that so I can see you like well. How is there take on this? So I am very much more curious on how they are going to take the genre of mysticism and magic in the marvel universe so we will see how things go with Agatha

I think while the moments were brief the performances are drawing me in…but, unlike you, I wanted more from Aubrey Plaza. I think she can pull it off though.

I actually disagree about the demographic it appeals to somewhat. Imo its wizard of oz if Dorothy was a disney villian. Agatha is very similar to a disney villian and goes on her twisted version of a yellow brick road or witches road. So imo people who like maleficent or wicked probably would like these 2 eps imo.

I wasn’t really excited for this show at all i just started watching it because it was something new from marvel but i was pleasantly surprised half of the first episode was slow but after that I’ve really liked everything way more than I thought i would. Excited for the rest of the season hopefully they stick the landing

(I'm gonna hope my sarcasm shone thru😂) But nah, I checked it out with absolutely 0 hopes after the trailer and this show is specifically for me. It's not the Hocus Pocus type thing I thought it'd be and thank fuck cause I genuinely despise Hocus Pocus. So far, it's fun and dark and one very cringey line in the first episode which had me concerned for the level of writing aside ("The things you're roasting me for are what make me dangerous"), I really liked it a LOT more than I expected

Although some moments aren’t for me and I find them kind of cringe. The sets and production are great. And I actually like the Halloween vibe that is also tied to the mysterious elements. I think episode 3 and the whole witches road thing is going to be the most crucial part for me to tell if I truly enjoy this show. So far it’s not awful not perfect. 5/10.

I have to admit I'd been kind of thinking "Does Coy just like anything Marvel?" and then when you don't like it something it's a show that I genuinely already think is one of top three (probably top 2) things to come out of the MCU since Endgame. :D :D :D I LOVED these two episodes - I've been wanting an MCU WIccan forever - and this show really had the perfect nostalgia vibes of one of those Buffy/Angel style 90s supernatural adventure shows. All the actors are fantastic - I mean it has FRICKIN' PATTI LUPONE IN IT! And I just can't wait to see where it goes.

Penguin target audience is more for men and people who want more a serious tone and Agatha is for girls, gays and people who want to have a fun time. I see several reviews and all the men say that Agatha was not for them and the complaint they have about the show was the things that the girls say they like it. So the issue here is more about the taste of the audience and not the quality of the shows.

For my money, I liked it. But I think it's because of the cast. If it wasn't Katheryn Hahn, I don't think I could have excused a couple things. The detective thing was weird. Had she played it like a normal person, it could have led to something cool but she felt like a slap stick spoof, but not really on purpose. Past that, I liked the silly horror vibe and I'm looking forward to the next few episodes

I think the slap stick spoof was entirely on purpose imo. And if you pay attention her acting as the detective progressively gets worse leading up to the interrogation room scene where she is very animated. I think that was eluding to her being broken out of the spell outside of her mind so the “show”/spell she was trapped in ep. 1 was getting worse in quality as the spell was fading. Once you realize that it’s very easy to connect w ep. 1 more.

An interesting review, thanks for sharing and like the Acolyte I hope you keep watching as looking forward to see if/how your views develop as the show does. If im being honest its Katherine Hahns acting that has me locked into this above the show itself. I like the campy genre (less interested in the Witchy genre) so that helps to and I can take the show for what it is. I think the potential pitfalls further down the line... 1.) can the show deliver on the "mystery" elements its set up with leaving as many unanswered questions? 2.) Agatha All Along (the song) is one of my single greatest moments in the MCU. Now we are in the real universe, albiet on the Witches Road, I dont think we can reach those heights again as we are not in Wandas TV sitcom universe sandbox anymore. That said the nude scene on the lawn gave me hope they can still be creative in the real marvel universe. I also give the show credit for its production values. The end credits were brilliant (even if the image Lisa Simpson dominates the sequence!). Finally - whilst I know their intentions are good and I will keep watching their videos - I hope that New Rockstars will reign in the degree of certainty in their theorising. It fuels the internets expectations of the show and while the show runners are no doubt aware of this moreso this time arount its very hard for them to make everything a real genuine "clue" thats there to be paid off.

Okay... So, MY thing is that film reviewers often don't explain what they mean when they say that they didn't feel anything for some of the characters. What exactly is the formula that you're looking for? I'm not understanding what you mean. (And by "you," I mean Coy - no one else.) As a writer, I feel like trying to give a backstory for every single character can sometimes distract from the mechanics and the true messages of the show.
