Aubrey Plaza seem just playing in on the question the "reporter" was asking her. It was him who kept pushing on "Is it gay?How much gay is it?" while she looks mildly annoyed and saying stuff that are expected to be said in the "modern times" in her own brand of sarcastic tone.

Sigh. I miss the days when entertainers and artists left their politics at the door and wanted to create a work of art. Nobody cares about how "gay" a media is. That is why Steven Universe broke ground not because it was gay. It's because it was a great TV show that set a whole new standard of storytelling with heart, thought provocation and beauty that wasn't seen before while just happening to have LGBT+ themes. Too many people miss the point or rather, are choosing to. My only theory as to why is because they think they force people to accept political and social justice narratives, it will make people accept the group they are putting at the forefront, but all it's doing is hurting that group because they wind up painting them in an insufferable light. Going back to Steven Universe, it had LGBT+ themes and the most iconic couple being Ruby and Sapphire who fused as Garnet were two females who even had an on screen wedding. But their love was not made into a show or in your face. It felt natural, they went through actual struggles and you even rooted for them like you would any other loving romantic couple. They weren't beautiful together because they were lesbians. They were beautiful together because they matched, they truly loved each other and they behaved like mature adults when they hit speed bumps and communicated. THAT is what people want to see in ANY romantic couple. The genders and orientations are just details, and it all comes back to the whole point: it doesn't matter because that's NOT what matters in true love.
@Androsynth75
@Androsynth75 Ай бұрын
Exactly this. I'm all for diversity and inclusion in stuff, but it all needs to make sense for the story. The story, characters and plot are what makes a show good or not. The Netflix She-Ra was the same. Everyone loved it, and the entire cast was LGBTQA+ in some way. And tellingly, it was written by queer and neurodiverse people, so it wasn't ABOUT being gay, or neurodiverse, it was about the story, but lots of characters had those qualities in believable ways that affected the story, but the story was not about it, and those qualities did not dictate it. They were just presented as normal, everyday things that people are. As it should be. And there was zero outcry, because it was excellent. And that show couldn't be any more gay. Meanwhile, Disney seems to want to preach and talk down to, which is hilarious, coming from a company that literally edited Finn out of all the Chinese TLJ/TROS posters because racism is ok if it makes you more money. People don't like to be lectured or talked down to. And even LGBTQA people like me do not want that shit. I want a good story, cool characters and believable arcs that have people like me in them. Not badly written and plotted, boring, tedious dreck like Acolyte or this show.
@Kat-cu9zp
@Kat-cu9zp Ай бұрын
I'm ok with politics, inclusion, and diversity in entertainment media and think that we should tell stories about different people with different viewpoints. My issue is when it stops being natural to the story and starts being a proselytizing soap box. The story then grinds to a dead stop while the characters preach to the audience about a social issue or the media includes complex issues without addressing any nuance. I would love to see us return to a time where the story was written naturally and issues were addressed through metaphor and allegory instead of being shoved down our throats. Steven Universe is a good example on how to do it right. I also really wish that we could have stories that addressed that no one is right or wins all the time. We all lose and fail, it is part of life. It drives me nuts when the main character in media is somehow magically right all the time, but then somehow no one believes them until it is time for them to save the day again singlehandedly. I remember a tv show I watched a while back that bent over backwards to never have the female character saved by a male character to the point of ridiculousness. It ended up making him look incompetent and her unrealistic. No one is going to be able to save themselves all of the time single handedly. Sometimes you will save yourself and others and sometimes you will need someone else to come rescue you. That doesn't make you weak, it makes you human.

Superhero stories are, at their core, about good versus evil. None of these stories can work for fans as long as the creators of these stories don't know the difference. Morality tales don't work without morals. The quest for power for its own sake isn't laudable. Identity is no substitute for character. Cramming identity politics into a story doesn't make it a story.

@ZeiahYT Ай бұрын
I mean I don't think it's the fact people are against diversity...honestly the fact that they are basically tagging this as the "gayest marvel project" is kind of offensive and I say that as someone who is queer! But the problem I have with Disney projects and all trying to sell a lot of their material as diverse is the fact that there is the scales for it surely, but there is no substance within the material they are supposedly gearing it towards. With that said though, stylistically Agatha All Along does actually look like a good show but I have been so and so on watching it because of what has been said about it from interviewers and such (probably will watch it when all the show is done airing). I don't consume media to just feel represented by something and honestly there has only been like 3 shows that I've seen that care about their storytelling as much as including diversity. Yet I also like it when it's just completely outside of trying to be diverse and realistic, one of my favorite cartoons Hazbin Hotel has plenty of queer characters that are actual characters than just being reduced to being queer at their core and also the fact that their flawed characters too is refreshing to see because I also do feel like queer representation has became too sensitized but that's another topic in terms of writing queer people. All in all it's not the fact that people are against diversity but it really has to be giving more than just trying to be "for the gays" like if you write a character that's queer then that's cool but it shouldn't be the main thing about them, that's what Disney doesn't get at all! There should be actual story going for it before anything, BEING QUEER ISN'T A PERSONALITY TRAIT at all, IT'S AN IDENTITY and honestly it's tiring how a lot of writers don't get this

A while back a comic book artist in my state who was going out of business was having a news story done on him. He didn't directly say comic stores are closing because Marvel has gone progressive, but he did say that now that Disney owns Marvel, any comic they've ever made can be pulled out of a box and used as a storyboard for some film or TV project. And yeah, recycling actors from their classic movies is probably not a great direction. I like RDJ but I don't think he could ever be imposing enough to portray Victor Von Doom. I think I read something a while back suggesting Henry Cavil would be a good choice. Would be awesome to see what he could do with the character.

The obvious appeal is wish fulfilment. A witch as a character is non-conforming women. But nonconformity covers things from being awkward to not fitting in with heteronormativity to just being an awful person. Sacrificing a goat and painting a pentacle in its blood would fall under being a difficult woman. I assumed they were after the appeal of scenery chewing. But female bonding might be an alternative narrative. But that presents a problem if Agatha had previously been painted as a full-blown villain. I haven't watched anything involving agatha, but as far as phrases go, "puppy-killer" did jump out from comments and articles. If that's the character, my view is "Go directly to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200". There are straightforward heroic tales. A lot of comic fans might like these. There are stories that are tragic - where someone spirals downward. There are antiheroes that might cover Walter White and The Punisher. Or you can have stories that aren't meant to say anything about anything really (where shiny color, songs and references distract you). Unless you're in the realm of art film, a show should probably hew to a standard audience address. Is Agatha the female punisher? Is she female Hannibal Lector? Or is she meant to elicit sympathy like a dove with an injured wing? A rebellion from femininity seems weird when masculine power-seeking and low adherence to social norms are chided. It feels like a contradiction when people argue that femininity is a prison, but then make claims that could be construed as female supremacist (eg. if women were in charge, there would be no war).I don't know what to say to a woman who needs to identify with a witch. I guess "oh, being expected to be empathetic and nice must have been horrible for you". Sure people are a mix of light and darkness, but unless Agatha is some balance of evil combined with volunteering at a soup kitchen, I don't see how she is anything other than something you should want to run away from.

Agatha All Along is supposed to be comedic. Right? The cackles we hear, however, come from the screen, not from the audience. Moreover, who cares about this character. When Agatha "regains" her agency, she will achieve the obscurity she richly deserves. The "gayest" Marvel project ever--seemingly made for a tiny audience--can only continue the real Disney project of alienating the audience that does exist.

Well, it appears from the statistics that women are not watching this show either. I am not sure about the LGBT+ community, but a much broader community needs to watch to make this show a hit. Even Disney is beginning to recognize that turning a profit is not optional and attracting the general audience is essential. If the general audience of men and women is not watching, then what's left is the audience we see recorded for Agatha All the Way and The Acolyte. If you like the show, then more power to you. I don't mind that at all. But the general audience does not agree with you. But you do you. Offer that liberty to those who don't see the world as you do. But I am curious. Why would you expect the general audience to watch a movie that was not written for it?

I score high on core traits and low on criminality. Partly because I am a psychopath, I try to be careful what I feel my brain and lot of horror is just garbage.
