In this video, I want to cover a condition called sarcopenia: age-related muscle loss. Sarcopenia is atrophy and degeneration of skeletal muscles and the loss of quality and strength of those muscles.
Typically, sarcopenia starts in two specific areas of the body: the quadriceps and the abdominal muscles. As it progresses, you can have a loss of the mass of muscle throughout the body. You can also lose your appetite and may have a higher risk of falling. Many times, there are no symptoms of sarcopenia until it becomes severe.
Sarcopenia can be worsened by:
• Immobility
• Nutritional deficiencies
• Lack of exercise
• Certain diseases
There are two factors to look at when someone has sarcopenia:
1. Initial muscle mass
2. Rate of muscle mass decline (loss of weight)
What you can try for sarcopenia:
• Routine exercise (especially resistance type training)
• Take vitamin D (10,000-20,000 IUs)
• Take omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil or cod liver oil)
• Take amino-acids (especially leucine)
• Take HMB (B-hydroxy B-methylbutyrate)

I watched this happen to my father. He just didn't want to do any exercise and watched his strength just melt away. I am also seeing the same thing happen to my almost 70 husband. All he does is sit in his chair all day. After watching multiple family members go down hill because of their sedentary life style, I try to be constantly doing something. "If you don't use it, you lose it."

My mental hit rock bottom also, but by the grace of God I took each day to build my mind, body & spirit back up. The topper was I stopped looking to those around me for happiness. It starts within me. Today I'm back to a healthy weight, the negative thoughts are in the background. I'm driving my locomotive instead of being the passenger. I see it happening-- I've been exercising 5x a week for at least a decade (and throughout my entire life but without fail over the last 10 years), and my hubs rarely works out, or very sporadically, and does daily desk work, mostly sitting for 8-10+ hours. I notice his body is shrinking, so to speak, while my basic bone structure is the same. I have a lot more stamina, flexibility, balance and agility too. Now he's suffering back and hip problems, while I'm still feeling youthful. I've always maintained that exercise is the fountain of youth. Can't say I love working out, but I do it.

Keep it up. I've just signed up at the gym. I've gone about 10 times in the last 2 months. (Would have gone more but...lockdowns....) I set the bar pretty low - just turn up and do the routine the gym owner set me - which is pretty minimal. But even from that 10 or so hours I can feel the difference.

Deep gashes on my arm in an accident led to me resuming exercise (after a period of healing of course). I had laid off gym workouts for 20 years. I'm close to 70 now. Because of covid I exercise at home, using heavy chains for about 10 different exercises. I've made rapid gains because I really push the intensity. I'm now more muscular than ever and in only about 6 or 7 months of exercise. Unfortunately I haven't figured out what exercises (other than squats) to do for my legs, so the progress there isn't as much. Thanks for your videos, Dr. Berg.

if you keep working out throughout you life and eating proteins youll continue to be buff even in old age. you don't need to take steroids to be muscular and have an impressive physique even in old age. it will fight age related muscle loss as well.

I started doing keto while I was consuming HMB For some reason, it prevented me from losing weight The moment I stopped taking HMB, I started to lose weight Another thing about HMB, it makes the muscles kind of contracted all the time. Which is something good in normal cases But if you have any sort of injury, it will give some pain

Thank you Doctor for these valuable information. As for resistance exercises thank Allah I do it regularly. But for the supplement for vitamin D and Omega 3 we don't have to make sure the amount we have to take inorder to be in the safe side as not to increase it in our blood test or so. Thank you Dr. Perg you are great

I did a lot of yoga in my 50’s, my osteopath told me I had the muscle tone of a woman ten to fifteen years younger. I’m now mid 60’s and haven’t done it properly in years, and it shows☹️. I must get back to it, even 15 min a day helps, and no it’s not the Instagram yoga, just the baggy pants achievable stretching I mean 😀

Spooky I emailed your team to request a video on Sarcopenia and you had just made this. Could you talk more about the need to eat more protein as a result of losing muscle mass?
@leah__gail

I started taking an amino acid complex with collagen a few months ago, I can definitely tell a difference. Protein is important as we age, but the amino acids, even more so, because we don’t metabolize the proteins as easily as we used to.

@@crivsmum4820 For my personal experience, best is to have enough nutrients first. Like Dr Berg's electrolytes formula. You can use it in uncooked treats recipes. And doing that, improve a lot the nervous system of your family 😉😉
