If you can't find the Wood Grain noise node in newer versions, it now appears to be Directional Noise 2 and has some different settings, but works the same. I'm finding all kinds of differences in my nodes/settings in version 2017.2.2 that makes this tutorial series much more challenging. Don't expect the tutorial to be a 1:1 copying experience unless you are using the same version of SD as the tutorial.

Yes, very sorry for this confusion. The 2017.2.2 update did change a lot. In the tutorial, I did mention in a lower third graphic that the wood pattern is changed to directional noise to help. I had recorded most of the series and the very next update changed so much on me : ( I'm sorry for this confusion.

OMG, I always wanted to use Transform2D like this but was afraid I couldn't because of the breaking of the tiling. Now that "MakeItTile" nodes make it possible! Opens the door for some more creative use of grunges and noises. Great. I always thought these nodes where jus for images you bring in from outside, it never occured to me to simpy use them on transformed nodes inside my graph. Very cool!
@harrysanders818

hoh? I thought copying nodes would not cost any performance? That assumption seems to be wrong? Like if you copy/paste a grunge around, it doubles the calculations?

I am also really having problems with the bevel node, it barely behaves like I'd expect it to. The distance setting is alwys around 0.001 and even then, It won't produce the same output as you have shown. I experienced this on every of my custom substances as well. I would think this is one of the most important nodes in the sculpting stage, but I am not sure how to use it properly. I'm kinda always stuck on 0.01 or 0.001 with a kinda "meh" result :) Could it have nyhting to do with the output size ? I'm using 2kx2k and I notice you use 1kx1k. And if so, how could I work around this?
@Substance3D

It can have an impact. It's best to reuse nodes when you can, especially very heavy nodes like grunge maps.

At 17:57, when you add the Bevel, there is just a single output called "Material" and the dotted line (when you left-click & drag towards the Blend Background) is green?? (I'm using Substance Designer 2017.2.2 build 687). It won't connect. I can click and drag from the Blend background to the Material output on the Bevel...and it connects. The line is green by default (not grey as per usual). Wasn't expecting this...any idea what's happening?
@Substance3D
@Substance3D 6 жыл бұрын
The issue is that you are in Material Mode as indicated by the material output. This mode only allows you to connect nodes that can make material (multiple channel) connections. You just need to hit number 1 key on the keyboard or set the mode of the graph to standard. In the video, I am in standard mode.

Hey Wes, I was just wondering if there were any specific reasons to separating the wood pattern and planks pattern from the main material. Is it purely for organization purposes or does have an effect on performance ? Is there any difference in keeping everything together or splitting them up ?

It's mainly organizational purposes. It doesn't have a drastic effect on performance. I like to break up graphs so I can more easily reuse elements.

are procedural textures, tilleable/seamless? i mean obviously they can be but is it something you've to be specific in order to do that, or will they come like this automaticaly no matter the size you choose? sorry for my noob question
@Substance3D

Everything in Substance Designer tiles automatically. You have to specifically break tiling to get rid of it. Only one to watch out for is using Transform 2D node and doing some arbitrary transforms.

Hi Wes, in my version of Substance Designer the Normal Map node doesn't contain an 'Alpha Channel Content' parameter section. So there is no 'Force Alpha to 1' button to click in the GUI. Consequently it looks like the resulting Normal map is rendered semi transparent in the (ie. the checkerboard is showing through) 2D view. Any way to resolve that (short of upgrading to the latest version)?
@Substance3D
@Substance3D 6 жыл бұрын
To fix the alpha, just add a levels after the normal node. On the levels set it to alpha and then take the output black and drag it to the left to the output white.

I have a problem where whenever I use the base material, nothing I plug in will show up on the 3D view? I do th right click "show outputs in 3D" thing but...nothing! When I make a new material with several output nodes lined up, copy the input nodes and feed them in to the normals (at around 6:55) it works just fine though! Not a big deal, just means my graphs will be more messy than they could be :/ Ver 2019.3.3 if it helps
@Substance3D
@Substance3D 4 жыл бұрын
You should be able to right-click and drag the base material node into the 3D view to view it's outputs. To view custom inputs, you can enable the custom inputs on the properties and feed in the normal and height data. I start this way to get a base material with height and normal data to work from when building shape and form.

I also find it very hard. I used Substance Painter for years and recently am learing more of Designer. It's kind of a complex soup at first but if you keep at it and try stuff out for yourself you'll probably have one aha moment after another, and I must say that keeping at it is really worth it. It also helped me further with understanding more of Painter. At some point I got that feeling that everything is just like working in an image manipulation program, but instead of a stack you have that left to right node based structure. That's basically the confusing part. Like being reluctant to copy nodes multiple times and being confused by what node does what, but the more you try it, the more you realize that this complexity really boils down to creative use of masking, blending, adding and subtracting stuff. As always. It's still just good ol' 2D images you manipulate, if you subtract all the intimidating looking graph structure. An I must say, once you are able to relatively quickly create our own tiling materials non-destructively and are able to iterate on them by jus altering a few parameters, it's really worth it to break through that difficulty. I always feel dumb while working in Designer and I think I am doing dumb things most of the time. But often, I see Wes or other tutors doing the same things (literally just throwing in histograms or levels etc. or adjusting blend modes, which seems trivial at first glance but is very powerful). Don't be discouraged brother, we will master it. :) Here is a tut that really helped me with understanding: 80.lv/articles/how-to-master-substance-designer-001agt/ Also, with all those complex looking graphs out there, it's really just because when we look at a graph by someone else, we are not the one who have made it, it kinda naturally looks overwhelming, but the person who did the graph mostly knows what is done where and why. It's the same as with program code, you can't understand another persons code at a first glance. It's the same with Substance Designer graphs.
