Relatively useless translation error trivia: The French wouldn't refer to an English-style fruitcake as "le gâteau". They call it "Le Cake".
@joshuarosen62424 жыл бұрын
I looked this up to check that you were correct and you totally are. I used to speak French reasonably well but I haven’t spent much time in France for the last 15 years and it’s got pretty rusty. I don’t think I was ever called upon to talk about fruit cake in French but now I shall know what to call it. Merci bien.
@FFKonoko4 жыл бұрын
French is fun like that. They also use sandwich, but I remember hearing some funny anecdote that some french people didn't like using the loan word and wanted to come up with one. It didn't take, since that's not really how languages evolve.
@joshuarosen62424 жыл бұрын
@@FFKonoko France is unusual in that it has L’Académie Française which is the official guardian of the French language (founded by Cardinal Richelieu no less). It hates loan words and from an official perspective, loan words are frowned upon. However, it’s losing its power. Back in the day when it could dictate to academia what textbooks said about the French language and that was the main source of linguistic learning, it had a degree of control. Now, young French people don’t give a monkey’s what L’Académie Française says. They learn a lot of English words watching KZbin and inevitably use them in everyday speech. In one way it’s a shame but you are absolutely right, that is not how languages evolve and it’s pointless trying to dictate to people what is correct. I’ve been trying to explain to people how to use the subjunctive in English for 40 years. I’ve given up - I have lost that battle, unfortunately. I don’t like it but language is organic and ever changing.
@ffeff83534 жыл бұрын
@@joshuarosen6242 -- Keep in mind that after all, a good percentage of modern English descends from the Norman conquest, when those in power spoke French (well, of a kind)! So it's coming full circle now. In Spain there is the Real Academia Española (I don't think that needs translating, am I right?) which also had a more prescriptive approach to language, whereas, if I understand this correctly (I haven't checked it recently), it now favors a more, how shall I put it, "seal-of-approval" function, i.e., once a word or phrase is sufficiently widespread, it makes it into the Royal Dictionary.
@joshuarosen62424 жыл бұрын
ffeff I have only been to Spain three times and my Spanish is very limited (although it’s good enough to know what Real Academia Española means) so I didn’t know that Spain had an equivalent body. Although it’s true that the Normans did indeed leave us with a lot of words of French origin (cheeky blighters), cake isn’t one of them so we’re getting our own back on them in this small way.
